‘Scream 4’ cuts down UK box office competition

Scream 4 has topped the UK box office on its debut weekend on release.

The horror sequel, which reunites series stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, has failed to make a significant box office dent in the US and Australia but its £2 million haul is enough to see it secure first place in the UK.

Half of the chart top ten is made up of new releases, with Your Highness and Red Riding Hood landing at numbers three and four just behind Rio. Russell Brand’s Hop completes the top five.

Elsewhere, Disney’s new Winnie The Pooh animation bows at number eight and the Marion Cotillard-led French film Little White Lies charts at ten.

‘Rio’ beats ‘Source Code’ at UK box office

Rio has taken first place at the UK box office on its debut weekend on release.

The 3D animated movie, which features the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway, pulls in £1.5 million to secure top spot ahead of sci-fi thriller Source Code.

Limitless holds its place at number three, Hop dips down to four and action movie Sucker Punch is at five.

The chart also sees three new releases enter the top ten. Bollywood movie Thank You bows at number seven, Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly’s The Roommate lands at nine and Disney animation Mars Needs Mums is at ten.

‘Hop’ edges out ‘Source Code’ at UK box office

Russell Brand’s Easter-themed family film Hop has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

The live-action/animation hybrid, co-starring James Marsden and Kaley Cuoco, takes in £1.39 million to secure first place. Jake Gyllenhaal’s science fiction thriller Source Code runs Hop close at the chart summit, opening with £1.3 million.

Last week’s number one Limitless is at number three ahead of Sucker Punch, which bows at a disappointing number four on the back of unfortunate reviews.

The Eagle is at number five, while A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventure is the biggest faller as it tumbles down four spots to number six.

Elsewhere, Rango continues its impressive box office run. The Johnny Depp animation has been in cinemas for a month and grossed £6.3 million in total from UK screens.

‘Limitless’ wins at UK box office

Bradley Cooper’s new movie Limitless has topped the UK box office on its debut weekend on release.

The thriller, also starring Robert De Niro and Abbie Cornish, opens with more than £2 million in ticket sales to cruise past animation A Turtle’s Tale and Channing Tatum’s The Eagle and secure first place.

Last week’s number one Rango falls to number four, while Liam Neeson’s Unknown rounds out the top five.

Adam Deacon’s comedy Anuvahood is the only release to holds its position as it charts at number seven for the second consecutive week.

Elsewhere, Battle: Los Angeles, Chalet Girl, The Lincoln Lawyer and Hall Pass each tumble down the chart four places in the top ten.

‘Rango’ returns to UK box office summit

Johnny Depp’s Rango has reclaimed the UK box office top spot from Battle: Los Angeles.

The Gore Verbinski-directed animated Western pulls in just over £1 million in its third weekend on release to leapfrog above the action movie and secure the top spot.

Liam Neeson thriller Unknown holds its place at number three, while new releases Chalet Girl and The Lincoln Lawyer round out the top five.

Comedy Anuvahood is the only other debuting movie to chart in the top ten, landing at number seven with just over £500,000.

Elsewhere, The Adjustment Bureau falls four spots to number eight and The King’s Speech earns £350,000 to chart at nine. The royal drama has grossed more than £44 million in the UK since its cinema bow in January.

Battle: Los Angeles has debuted in first place at the UK box office.

The Aaron Eckhart-led sci-fi blockbuster pulls in £1.7 million to narrowly edge past Johnny Depp’s Rango and secure the chart top spot.

Thriller Unknown holds its position at number three, while The Adjustment Bureau falls to number four. New release Hall Pass, the latest comedy from the Farrelly brothers, completes the top five.

Elsewhere political thriller Fair Game is the only other new release to chart in the top ten, landing at number nine.

Rango has held off competition from The Adjustment Bureau and Unknown to top the UK box office.

Johnny Depp’s animated Western pulls in £1.6 million to lead the chart on its debut weekend on release. The total narrowly edges the film past Matt Damon’s Bureau and Liam Neeson’s Unknown to secure the number one spot.

Last week’s runner-up Paul slips down to four, while The King’s Speech rises to five on the back of its recent Academy Awards success.

3D animation Gnomeo & Juliet dips sharply to six , while True Grit and West Is West climb to fill numbers eight and nine respectively.

Elsewhere, new releases Ironclad and The Tempest both miss out on top ten places.

‘Gnomeo & Juliet’ returns to UK chart summit

Gnomeo & Juliet has reclaimed first place at the UK box office.

The 3D animation, which re-tells William Shakespeare’s classic tale with a cast of garden gnomes, takes in £2.5 million to lead the chart ahead of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s Paul.

New release I Am Number Four debuts at number three, while the half-term school holidays helped boost animated films Yogi Bear and Tangled up to fourth and fifth place respectively.

Romantic comedy No Strings Attached (number eight), starring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman, and belated sequel West Is West (number ten) also debuted in the chart.

Elsewhere, Nicolas Cage’s high profile action film Drive Angry 3D and Anthony Hopkins-led horror The Rite fail to dent the top ten, landing at numbers 11 and 12.

‘King’s Speech’ dominates Oscars

The King’s Speech and Inception have dominated the 2011 Academy Awards, taking home four Oscars apiece at the Hollywood ceremony.

The British-produced royal drama, about King George VI’s attempts to overcome a crippling stammer with the aid of speech therapist Lionel Logue, took home ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Actor’ for star Colin Firth, ‘Best Director’ for Tom Hooper and ‘Best Original Screenplay’ for David Seidler.

Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending science fiction thriller Inception ruled in the technical categories, scooping awards for ‘Cinematography’, ‘Sound Editing’, ‘Sound Mixing’ and ‘Visual Effects’.

The Social Network emerged with three Oscars (‘Adapted Screenplay’, ‘Editing’, ‘Original Score’), while True Grit, which notched up ten nominations, walked away empty-handed.

‘Kick-Ass’ leads Empire Award nominations

Superhero movie Kick-Ass has picked up six nominations at the 2011 Jameson Empire Awards.

Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of Mark Millar’s ultra-violent comic series secured nominations for ‘Best Film’, ‘Best British Film’, ‘Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy’ and ‘Best Director’, along with ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Newcomer’ nods for stars Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz, respectively.

The King’s Speech, Inception, The Social Network and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World are also nominated in the ‘Best Film’ category.

Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours, The King’s Speech, Four Lions and Monsters will compete with Kick-Ass for the ‘Best British Film’ accolade.
