Anthem tops the list with half of Andromeda’s sales

Monday, February 25th, 2019

We’ve just provided our review of Anthem this past week, and we’ve found out courtesy of GamesIndustry.biz that despite a mixed reception it has flown to the top of the UK boxed charts to claim the number one spot, with 54% of its sales coming from PS4, 40% on Xbox One, and the rest on PC.

Despite this first-place debut another report reveals that the game only managed half of the launch week sales of Mass Effect: Andromeda, Bioware’s last game that was notorious for its disappointing reviews and itself sold half of what Mass Effect 3 managed. Insider ZhugeEX also claims that the game sold around 10% of what Destiny managed in its first week, with Anthem also selling around a quarter of what Destiny 2 achieved in its first week too.

There are a number of caveats to add here though. The landscape has changed a lot since the launch of 3 and even Andromeda in 2017, with digital downloads (the stats of which we don’t have, whether that’s sales or Origin Access players) becoming more favoured in recent years over boxed sales. We should also note that anticipation was very high for Andromeda, while Andromeda’s own reception and the lukewarm response to the various pre-release demos dampened the hype for Anthem.

Anthem’s launch week sales were lower than that of Resident Evil 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3, heavy hitters that have also launched this year, but it has outsold Far Cry: New Dawn (down 43% this week) and Metro Exodus (down 55%) as both games hit their second week. Jump Force also has a big drop from number four to 17 with a 64% drop in sales in its second week, with Crackdown 3 dropping to number 26 after a 51% dip.

Below you can see the top 10 in full. Can Anthem hold onto the top spot?

1. Anthem / EA
2. Far Cry: New Dawn / Ubisoft
3. FIFA 19 / EA Sports
4. Red Dead Redemption 2 / Rockstar
5. Metro: Exodus / Deep Silver
6. Forza Horizon 4 / Microsoft
7. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe / Nintendo
8. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe / Nintendo
9. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 / Activision
10. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate / Nintendo

Ariana Grande replaces herself at Number 1 for a second time

Friday, February 22nd, 2019

Ariana Grande’s chart domination continues as she occupies three spots in this week’s Official Singles Chart Top 20.

The star replaces herself again as 7 Rings returns to Number 1, pushing last week’s leader Break Up With Your With Your Girlfriend… I’m Bored down to 2. The swap at the top makes her the first artist to replace herself at Number 1 for two consecutive weeks. Meanwhile, album track Needy sits at Number 11.

Elsewhere in the Top 10, 2x BRIT Award winner Calvin Harris sees his latest single Giant with Rag’n’Bone Man lift two places to Number 4, and after an eight-week climb, Hackney collective NSG reach the Top 10 hopping three places to Number 9 with Options ft. Tion Wayne.

Celebrating their first Top 10, NSG told Official Charts: “We are so grateful! It was destined. We truly believed in the power of track and the combination of what we were able to do with Jae5, we create great music and from there what’s meant to be will be. All we can say is thank you to the supporters and also Thank you to God.”

This week’s highest new entry goes to Cardi B & Bruno Mars’ Please Me (12), their second collaboration after last year’s Top 10 hit Finesse (Remix), while Cadet’s Advice ft. Deno Driz soars 21 rungs to a new peak at 15 following his untimely passing earlier this month.

There are more big climbers this week from D-Block Europe’s Kitchen Kings, up 51 places to 16, boosted by the release of the South London collective’s new album Home Alone, and viral hit Thotiana by rapper Blueface charges 17 spots to 23.

Further down, Little Mix’s new single Think About Us ft. Ty Dolla $ign rebounds 23 places to a new peak at Number 26, and Zedd’s 365 ft. Katy Perry is new at 37.

Far Cry: New Dawn and Metro Exodus top the gaming charts

Monday, February 18th, 2019

Players around the world had been waiting for February 15 for a very long time. The day was filled with anticipated releases such as Crackdown 3, Far Cry: New Dawn, Metro Exodus, Jump Force and Anthem (kind of). This made it very likely that one or more of these games wouldn’t get as much attention as if they had launched on any other day, and that seems to have come to pass.

Sure, Far Cry: New Dawn ended up being the best-selling game last week, but Gamesindustry.biz can reveal that the spin-off sold 86.5 per cent less physical copies than last year’s Far Cry 5 and just a little more than a quarter of what Far Cry Primal did in its first week back in 2016.

Deep Silver and 4A Games have more reasons to celebrate despite selling approximately 2,000 units less than New Dawn, as Metro Exodus sold close to 50 per cent more units than Metro Last Light did in its first week. Very impressive, especially as digital sales are far more common these days than when Last Light launched in 2013.

Those of you who’ve been keeping a close eye on the coverage of Crackdown 3 the last few months probably won’t be too surprised to learn that the game didn’t even manage to crack the top ten by landing on thirteenth. That’s because it barely managed to sell ten per cent of what Crackdown 2 did in 2010, so expect Microsoft to boast about player numbers and Xbox Game Pass downloads instead of sales in the future.

Either way, here’s the top ten from last week:

  1. Far Cry: New Dawn
  2. Metro Exodus
  3. Red Dead Redemption 2
  4. Jump Force
  5. FIFA 19
  6. Resident Evil 2
  7. New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe
  8. Kingdom Hearts III
  9. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  10. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Ariana Grande scores a record-breaking week with Thank U, Next

Friday, February 15th, 2019

Ariana Grande dominates this week’s Official Singles and Albums Charts as her new album Thank U, Next debuts at Number 1 with huge streaming numbers.

Ariana’s latest album becomes her third to debut at the top of the chart, following Dangerous Woman (2016) and Sweetener (2018). Thank U, Next is the star’s biggest opening week for an album to date at 65,000 combined sales, including 59 million streams across its 12 tracks.

On the Official Singles Chart, Ariana lands her fifth Number 1 with Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored (85,000 combined sales), knocking her previous single 7 Rings down to Number 2.

Another track from the album, Needy, also debuts in this week’s Top 10 at Number 8. It makes Ariana the first female artist since Ruby Murray in March 1955 to have three Top 10 singles as a lead artist in the same week.

Aside from Ariana, Lewis Capaldi’s Someone You Loved makes big gains in this week’s Top 10, leaping six places to a new peak at Number 3. Another Lewis single, Grace, vaults 14 spots to Number 26.

Khalid & Disclosure’s brand-new track Talk opens at 16, earning the US singer-songwriter his tenth Top 40 single and Disclosure their sixth and first in almost four years.

AJ Tracey’s Psych Out rebounds back into the Top 40 and reaches a new peak at Number 18 following the release of his new album, and Tom Walker lands his second Top 40 single with Just You And I, up 39 rungs to Number 30.

Three more songs make their Top 40 debut: Who Do You Love? By The Chainsmokers ft. 5 Seconds Of Summer (34), Breathe by Camelphat & Christoph ft. Jem Cooke (37), and viral hit Thotiana by US rapper Blueface (40).

Finally, following his tragic death last week, London rapper Cadet re-enters the Top 40 at 36 with his Deno Driz collaboration, Advice.

Red Dead 2 pushes Kingdom Hearts off the top spot

Monday, February 11th, 2019

After Square Enix and Capcom topped the UK physical game charts this year already with Kingdom Hearts III and Resident Evil 2 respectively, a familiar face is back at the top of the pile this week, as Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 has reclaimed the top spot with FIFA 19 just behind at number two.

Speaking of Rockstar, Grand Theft Auto V is at number 10 as well, while Kingdom Hearts III has slid down to number three, with Resident Evil 2 at four. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, Kingdom Hearts saw an 87% decrease in sales from last week, while Resident Evil 2 dropped 67%.

Red Dead Redemption’s 14% increase in sales means it can add a sixth week at the top of the charts, and FIFA 19 is hardly surprising to see there since it always sells well, even being the best-selling console game in Europe last year.

For the full top 10 list check down below. Can Red Dead Redemption 2 stay top, considering all the games like Metro Exodus and Far Cry: New Dawn releasing this Friday?

1. Red Dead Redemption 2 / Rockstar

The Specials secure first Number 1 album with Encore

Friday, February 8th, 2019

The Specials have won this week’s hectic race for Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart.

Following an intense week of in-store signings and promotion, the ska legends beat revived Noughties boyband Busted to the finishing line by just 1060 sales with Encore.

The Specials’ first album of new material in 37 years, Encore is their first ever UK Number 1 album, clocking up 89% physical sales and, coincidentally, it’s 39 years ago this week since their single Too Much Too Young topped the Official Singles Chart.

Receiving the award, The Specials told OfficialCharts.com, “Recording the album has been one of the most amazing trips of our lives. What can we say? It couldn’t have been better timing. A real thanks to the fans who have stayed with us for all this time. We all share in this, thank you.”

Busted are runners-up with Half Way There, their third album to reach Number 2 – 2002’s self-titled debut and 2003’s A Present For Everyone also just missed the top spot on the Official Albums Chart.

Another three brand new albums end their first week in the Top 10: Ripples by Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown (4), London rapper Fredo’s first full-length album Third Avenue (5), and Claire Richards’ debut solo project My Wildest Dreams (9).

Billie Eilish lands a new peak at 12 with her Don’t Smile At Me EP, ahead of three more new entries from White Lies’ Five at Number 14, Dutch metal band Within Temptation’s Resist at 15, and the return of Nina Nesbitt, whose The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change is new at Number 21.

Finally, Buddy Holly and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra close out the Top 40 with True Love Ways; it vaults 30 positions to return to the Top 40 at Number 40 following the 60th anniversary of Holly’s death in 1959.

January started the year strong in terms of game releases, as not only did we have Resident Evil 2 topping the UK physical charts on release, but now Square Enix’s long-awaited RPG Kingdom Hearts III has done the same in its first week.

It’s the most successful UK launch that the series has seen and more than doubles that of Kingdom Hearts II 14 years ago. 82% of players bought the game on PlayStation 4 – which isn’t a surprise considering it used to be a PlayStation exclusive.

Resident Evil 2 falls to second place with a 67% decline in sales, and below that we see more of the usual suspects like Call of Duty, Red Dead Redemption 2, and various Nintendo giants that we’re used to seeing in the top 10.

For the full top 10 list you can check down below:

7 Rings shines at the top of the Official Singles Chart for a second week

Friday, February 1st, 2019

7 Rings remains at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart as the Ariana Grande hit racked up more than 10.4 million listens over the last 7 days.

Ari’s newest offering finishes the week 27,000 combined sales ahead of its closest competition, former Number 1 Sweet But Psycho by Ava Max (2).

Calvin Harris & Rag’n’Bone Man climb one spot to Number 4 with Giant, a new peak, while Mabel dials up four places to Number 7 with Don’t Call Me Up, now her highest charting single to date.

Meanwhile, two acts score their first ever Top 10s: J. Cole lands this week’s highest new entry with Middle Child at Number 9, and Lewis Capaldi ascends three positions with Someone You Loved at 10.

Hackney collective NSG eye up the top tier with Options ft. Tion Wayne (11), while Westlife leap up nine levels with Hello My Love (20) after the acoustic version was released.

Dua Lipa’s Swan Song from the Alita: Battle Angel soundtrack flies in at Number 25, ahead of Flipp Dinero, who reaches a new peak of Number 30 with Leave Me Alone. Yungen and Dappy make themselves at home in the Top 40 as Comfortable debuts at 32, and Little Mix’s new version of Think About Us with Ty Dolla $ign impacts at Number 34.

Finally, Nights Like This by Kehlani, also featuring Ty Dolla $ign, leaps 12 places to round off the chart at Number 40.
