‘Arthur Christmas’ reclaims UK box office crown

Arthur Christmas has reclaimed first place at the UK box office on its seventh week on release.

Aardman’s festive family movie, featuring the voices of James McAvoy and Bill Nighy, pulled in more than £2 million over the Christmas period to return to the number one spot ahead of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked falls a place to number three, while non-movers Puss in Boots and New Year’s Eve round out the top five.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Bollywood action film Don 2 is a new entry at six, and Christmas favourite It’s a Wonderful Life makes it into the top ten after screening at 50 cinemas nationwide.

Michael Bublé gets Christmas No.1 album

Michael Bublé has remained at the top of the album chart this week with Christmas.

The singer’s festive longplayer tops the charts for the second week in a row, selling 317,000 copies to become the Christmas number one album.

Bublé said in a statement: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be Christmas number one. The UK is one of my favourite places to visit and it’s a real honour to have my record in so many fans’ homes this Christmas. Merry Christmas, everyone!”

Christmas is now the biggest-selling album of December and the fourth biggest-selling album of the year,

This week’s chart shows minimal movement, with just four records switching places. Olly Murs’s In Case You Didn’t Know moves up one place, pushing Mylo Xyloto by Coldplay down to number four, while Westlife’s greatest hits compilation leaps one place ahead of + by Ed Sheeran, moving up to number eight.

‘Sherlock Holmes 2’ beats ‘Chipmunks’ at UK box office

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows has debuted in first place at the UK box office.

Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law’s blockbuster sequel held off competition from Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked to emerge as the number one movie over the December 16-18 weekend.

Arthur Christmas slips down a place to number three, last week’s chart-topper Puss in Boots is at four and romantic comedy New Year’s Eve rounds out the top five.

Elsewhere, family movies Hugo and Happy Feet Two continue their stay in the top ten, landing at numbers six and seven respectively.

Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 charts at number eight, and has now grossed £29.5 million in the UK since its release on November 18.

Michael Bublé reclaims albums No.1 with ‘Christmas’

Michael Bublé has returned to the peak of the UK album chart with his Christmas LP.

The Canadian singer’s festive opus switched positions with last week’s number one Lioness: Hidden Treasures by the late Amy Winehouse after achieving the biggest weekly sales of any album this year, with a total of over 269,000 copies.

Colplay’s Mylo Xyloto boosts five places to three following an 113% week-on-week sales increase sparked by their performance on last Sunday’s X Factor final.

All of this week’s top six, which also comprises of In Case You Didn’t Know by Olly Murs, Talk That Talk by Rihanna and Adele’s 21, shifted over 100,000 copies in the last seven days.

Elsewhere, X Factor 2010 runner-up Rebecca Ferguson dips four to seven with her debut album Heaven, Westlife sneak back into the Top 10 with their Greatest Hits record, which is up two to nine, and Bruno Mars drops back out of the top-sellers after falling one place to 11.

‘Puss in Boots’ beats ‘Arthur Christmas’: UK box office top 10 in full

Puss in Boots has topped the UK box office on its debut weekend on release.

DreamWorks’ 3D animated family movie, featuring the voice talents of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek, knocks Arthur Christmas from the top spot to claim first place.

New Year’s Eve bows at number three, Hugo holds its place at four and Happy Feet Two completes the top five.

Elsewhere, new releases A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas and Another Earth land at numbers eight and ten respectively.

Amy Winehouse wins posthumous albums No.1 with ‘Hidden Treasures’

Amy Winehouse’s posthumous release Lioness: Hidden Treasures has landed straight in at number one on the UK album chart.

The LP of previously-unheard recordings shifted over 194,000 copies in just seven days, giving the late singer the biggest weekly sales total of her career.

The figure also makes Hidden Treasures the fourth fastest-selling album of 2011, a title currently held by Lady GaGa’s Born This Way with 215,000 copies.

Lioness‘s success is emulated by the rest of this Sunday’s top four, all of which have managed to break the 100,000 sales barrier in the past week.

Michael Bublé’s Christmas remains at two, but posts a week-on-week increase of over 30% to almost 190,000 copies, X Factor runner-up Rebecca Ferguson shifts over 128,000 editions of her debut album Heaven to reach three and Olly Murs still notches up over 113,000 sales of In Case You Didn’t Know, despite slipping from pole position.

As Christmas approaches, former number one albums occupy the rest of the Top 10, with the biggest movements being made by Rihanna’s Talk That Talk, down two to five, and One Direction’s Up All Night, which crashes five to nine.

‘Arthur Christmas’ overtakes ‘Twilight’ to UK box office number one

Arthur Christmas has taken the top spot in the UK box office.

The film had been stuck in second position behind The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 for two weeks but has risen to number one.

Aardman’s latest animation took just under £1.9m for the weekend, taking its total since release to £11.48m

Happy Feet Two is the highest new entry, coming in at two ahead of the latest Twilight movie, which drops from top spot.

Martin Scorsese’s Hugo and the latest remake of The Thing are other new entries rounding out the top five.

Olly Murs takes first album No.1 with ‘In Case You Didn’t Know’

Olly Murs has secured his first UK number one album with his second release In Case You Didn’t Know.

The 2009 X Factor runner-up narrowly beat Michael Bublé’s Christmas – which rose one place to two – by just 5,000 copies.

Rihanna’s Talk That Talk slipped two places from last week’s number one to three, but still managed to sell over 100,000 units.

Il Divo scored their fifth UK Top 10 album, with Wicked Game landing at number six. Bruno Mars’s former number one Doo Wops & Hooligans climbed back up three places to ten, spending its 34th week in the Top 10.

Westlife’s Greatest Hits slips five places to nine, while JLS see their Jukebox album fall to 11.
