Resident Evil 2 has a triumphant return at the top

Monday, January 28th, 2019

You might have heard that the remake of Resident Evil 2 came out on Friday, with fans getting the weekend to experience all the spooks once more in this shiny new package. Anticipation was high before release, and GamesIndustry.biz reports that this has translated to good sales too, as it has entered the top of the physical charts in the UK.

21 years after Resident Evil 2 originally launched on the first PlayStation in 1998, this actually marks the biggest launch since January of 2017 when Resident Evil 7: Biohazard released. This new horror game didn’t top the sales of two years ago though, as Leon and Claire’s nightmare managed around 18% less.

It’s unsurprising to see that 74% of the sales were on PS4 considering it was revealed at Sony’s conference during E3. With these figures it sits above usual suspects Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 at 2 and 3 respectively, with New Super Mario Bros. U dropping to 4 after a 44% dip in sales. Ace Combat 7 also falls to 6 after a 51% decrease.

Below is the top 10 list in full. With Kingdom Hearts 3 out this week, can Resident Evil stay on top?

1. Resident Evil 2 / Capcom
2. Red Dead Redemption 2 / Rockstar
3. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 / Activision
4. New Super Mario Bros. U / Nintendo
5. FIFA 19 / EA Sports
6. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown / Bandai Namco
7. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate / Nintendo
8. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe / Nintendo
9. Grand Theft Auto V / Rockstar
10. Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy / Activision

She wanted it, she got it! Ariana Grande lands straight in at Number 1 on this week’s Official Singles Chart with 7 Rings.

Grande’s latest release from her forthcoming album thank u, next (released Feb. 8) posts an opening week combined sales figure of 126,000, split between 15,000 downloads and 16.9 million streams, setting a new UK chart record for the most streams of a song in a week.

7 Rings is also Ariana’s biggest opening week for a single in the UK, surpassing 2014’s Problem, which tallied 113,000 combined sales in its first week.

It’s also the first single to achieve over 100,000 combined sales in a week since June 2017, when Artists For Grenfell’s Bridge Over Troubled Water landed at Number 1 with a week 1 figure of 170,000.

7 Rings is Grande’s fourth single to reach Number 1 in the UK, following Problem ft. Iggy Azalea (2014), Bang Bang with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj (2014) and thank u, next (2018).

Calvin Harris nets his 22nd Top 5 single as Giants ft. Rag’n’Bone Man lifts two places to Number 5, and a new remix of Gun Lean from Russ featuring Taze, LD, Digga D, Ms Banks & Lethal Bizzle sees the track rocket 25 places to Number 9.

London singer Mabel narrowly misses out on the Top 10 but makes a strong debut nonetheless at 11 with Don’t Call Me Up, Hackney collective NSG hit a new peak with Options, up two to 12, and Someone You Loved by rising star Lewis Capaldi is shaping up to be his big breakthrough hit, zooming 16 places to 13.

New Super Marios Bros. U Deluxe debuts at the top spot

Tuesday, January 15th, 2019

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe released last week for fans of the series to either try the classic Wii U game out for the first time in this new package, or revisit it again on the Nintendo Switch. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, this seems to have made a mark on the Switch fanbase, as it has entered in at the top spot in the UK charts when it comes to physical sales.

To nobody’s surprise given the lack of enthusiasm for the console, the Wii U version of this game didn’t sell nearly as well as the Switch edition, which sold 56% higher than the original release in November 2013.

Elsewhere in the charts we see a new entry in the form of Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition, coming in at number nine with 49% of sales coming from Switch players. 43% bought it on PS4, and the remaining players decided to go with Xbox One as their platform of choice.

For the full top 10 list take a look down below, which includes many of the usual suspects like FIFA 19 and Red Dead Redemption 2, as well as another reappearance by Grand Theft Auto V.
