Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson hit Number 1

Saturday, April 29th, 2017

The UK just wants to be part of your Symphony, Clean Bandit! The three-piece’s collaboration with Zara Larsson is this week’s Number 1, denying Ed Sheeran a 15th week at the top on the Official Singles Chart.

Symphony is Clean Bandit’s third Number 1, their second in a row after Rockabye, which spent nine weeks at the top and scooped the 2016 Christmas Number 1. It’s Zara Larsson’s first UK chart-topper, her previous highest peak being Number 2, with I Would Like.

Clean Bandit tell OfficialCharts.com: “We are all amazed to hear that Symphony is Number 1! We’ve been in the US the last few weeks touring with Zara Larsson and we got the chance to tell her it was Number 1. She was so excited!

“After everything thing that happened with Rockabye, we didn’t think it would be possible to replicate that but now we’re Number 1 again!”

New entries and high climbers

There are two new entries in this week’s Top 10, the first climbing nine to 6 for Jason Derulo. Swalla, featuring Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign becomes Jason’s 12th Top 10 hit, Nicki’s 11th and Ty’s 2nd. Shawn Mendes also impacts the Top 10 at Number 7 – he climbs an epic 136 spots with There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back, claiming his third Top 10.

Within the Top 20, there are a few notable climbs, including The Cure by Lady Gaga, rising four to 19 and the 17th Top 20 of Gaga’s career. Just behind her, Did You See from J Hus leaps 14 to Number 20.

Daddy Yankee scores his first Top 40 appearance in 12 years, since Gasolina back in 2005. His Luis Fonsi collab Despacito jumps from Number 70 to 22 thanks to a remix featuring Justin Bieber.

Rising 39 to 24 is viral video hit French Montana and Swae Lee’s Unforgettable, and Zayn and PARTYNEXTDOOR’s Still Got Time lifts nine to 27.

A further three songs make Top 40 debuts: Paramore’s Hard Times marks their 7th Top 40 appearance at 34, Lana Del Rey’s Lust For Life featuring The Weeknd is at Number 38 and Cheat Codes make No Promises with Demi Lovato at 39.

Ghost Recon spends fourth week at top of gaming charts

Monday, April 24th, 2017

For the second week running, and fourth in total, Ghost Recon: Wildlands tops the all formats UK retail chart. It is notable that Horizon: Zero Dawn was the best-selling single format SKU for the week, showcasing the tremendous legs the February release has had. Well, tremendous if you somehow disregard the legs of the all formats number two, of course. Mass Effect: Andromeda sneaks back into the top 10 after only charting at twelve last week.

No major new releases came out, so the best “new” entry was Dark Souls III: The Fire Fades Edition, which managed to reach number 40 in the all formats chart. Last week’s number six, Yooka-Laylee, falls to number 15.

All Formats:

1. Ghost Recon: Wildlands / Ubisoft

Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You returns to Number 1

Friday, April 21st, 2017

Ed Sheeran took a week off from dominating the Official Singles Chart last week, but he has climbed back up to the top spot today after just seven days away.

Shape Of You knocks Harry Styles’ Sign Of The Times from the peak to log a 14th week at the top. When it comes to non-consecutive chart toppers, only Frankie Laine’s I Believe has achieved more weeks at Number 1; that track spent 18 weeks at Number 1 over three stints back in 1953.

Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson’s Symphony hops one spot to Number 2, a new peak for the single. Ed’s back again with Galway Girl at 3, ahead of Harry Styles who tumbles to Number 4 with Sign Of The Times. Coincidentally, the last one-week reign at Number 1 was Harry’s fellow One Direction bandmate Zayn with debut single Pillowtalk in February 2016.

Kendrick Lamar dominates today’s Official Singles Chart with five songs from his album Damn hitting the Top 40. The LP’s lead single Humble climbs 25 places to Number 6, becoming this week’s highest climber in the process. The track is also Kendrick’s third Top 10 single and his highest charting release as a lead artist. Other tunes of his making an impact include DNA (18), Loyalty ft. Rihanna (27), Element (33) and Love (39).

Jason Derulo is another huge climber with his Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign hook-up Swalla, which rises nine spots to Number 15, and finally, two tracks hit the Top 40 for the first time this week. Lady Gaga enters at Number 23 with surprise single release The Cure, while J Hus’ Did You See rises seven places to Number 34.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands is back on top of the gaming charts

Tuesday, April 18th, 2017

Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands is back on top of the UK retail charts this week after last week’s number one, Persona 5, completely falls off the charts. Not charting in the top 40 for a game that was number one the week prior is certainly an oddity, but apparently it is out of stock in many places following the extremely strong opening week.

This week’s best newcomer is Playtonic’s Yooka-Laylee that lands at a very respectable sixth place. It remains to be seen if it can show some legs and find a new younger audience at retail as presumably most early adopters are older fans of Banjo-Kazooie. The only other new entry to break into the top 40 is Stardew Valley that finally hits retail and lands at number 30 (all formats).

Mass Effect: Andromeda continues to tumble down the charts and finds itself at number twelve this week after registering positions 1, 1, and 5 in its first three weeks.

The fact that Horizon: Zero Dawn ranks at third in the individual chart and only at 11 in the all formats chart indicates that the difference in sales between many of these titles is very small (the fact that Wii U sales of Breath of the Wild pushes it ahead of Horizon in the all formats chart is a strong indication of that).

All Formats (all prices):

1. Ghost Recon: Wildlands / Ubisoft
2. Lego Worlds / Warner Bros.
3. Grand Theft Auto V / Rockstar
4. Overwatch / Blizzard
5. FIFA 17 / EA Sports
6. Yooka-Laylee / Team 17 (new)
7. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare / Activision
8. Rocket League / 505 Games
9. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild / Nintendo
10. Lego City Undercover / Warner Bros.

Individual Formats (units):

1. Ghost Recon: Wildlands / PS4
2. Ghost Recon: Wildlands / Xbox One
3. Horizon: Zero Dawn / PS4
4. Lego Worlds / Xbox One
5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild / Switch
6. Grand Theft Auto V / Rockstar
7. Lego Worlds / PS4
8. Yooka-Laylee / PS4 (new)
9. Overwatch / Xbox One
10. Grand Theft Auto V / Xbox One

Harry Styles defeats Ed Sheeran to score debut solo Number 1

Friday, April 14th, 2017

13 is unlucky for some, including Ed Sheeran whose thirteen-week stint at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart has come to an end.

Harry Styles scores his first Number 1 as a solo artist with debut single Sign Of The Times. Taken from his fortchoming self-titled debut album, due for release May 12, Sign Of The Times pipped Ed’s Shape Of You to the top spot by just over 3,000 copies, the track has been downloaded 39,000 times and accumulated 3.5 million streams in the seven days since its release.

It’s not all bad though for Ed – Shape of You (2) and Galway Girl (3) are still both in the Top 5, while Shape of You was the most streamed track of the week with 6.8 million plays.

Elsewhere, there are small gains for Martin Jensen’s Solo Dance and Zedd & Alessia Cara’s Stay which both advance one place to new peak positions of 7 and 8 respectively.

New entries and high climbers

Lorde’s Green Light advances seven places this week to crack the Top 20 for the first time (20). Jason Derulo, Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign’s Swalla leaps 10 spots to 24, while Future’s Mask Off climbs seven rungs to Number 26.

Finally, two tracks enter the Top 40 for the very first time; Martin Solveig and Ina Wroldsen’s Places rockets 15 places to Number 27, and Disciples score their first Top 40 entry since July 2015 with On My Mind, a 47 place riser to Number 34.

Persona 5 tops the UK retail charts

Monday, April 10th, 2017

The excellent Persona 5 became the first JRPG in more than four years (Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch in February 2013) to reach the top spot in the UK retail charts this week. The top seller of the last two weeks, Mass Effect: Andromeda, tumbled down to fifth (-53% in sales), in what is likely another tightly contested chart. The re-release of Lego City Undercover managed to score 8th position on the all formats chart, but was only ranked second in the battle of lego games with Lego Worlds in third.

Other new releases this week included Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition (23rd) and Yo-Kai Watch 2 (splits SKUs meant only Bony Spirits in 36th was ranked).

All Formats:

1. Persona 5 / Deep Silver (new)
2. Ghost Recon: Wildlands / Ubisoft
3. Lego Worlds / Warner Bros.
4. Grand Theft Auto V / Rockstar

Ed Sheeran, Jamiroquai and Goldfrapp dominate this week’s Official Charts

Saturday, April 8th, 2017

Ed Sheeran extends his reign over the Official Albums Chart for a fifth week as his latest collection ÷ logs a fifth stint at Number 1.

The record, which shifted another 108,000 equivalent units this week across physical, download and streaming equivalent sales, fends off competition from Rag’n’Bone Man’s Human (2) and Jamiroquai, who lands this week’s highest new entry at 4 with his eighth studio album Automaton.

÷ is currently the UK’s Official biggest album of 2017 so far, with 1.5 million equivalent units sold across all formats.

Ed also keeps his place at the summit of the Official Singles Chart with Shape Of You, scoring its 13th consecutive week at the summit, while his track Galway Girl holds in the runner-up slot for a fifth week.

Elsewhere in this week’s Top 10, Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson’s Symphony climbs a place to a new peak at Number 3, and two songs enter the top tier for the first time: Zedd & Alessia Cara’s Stay at 9, up two spots, and the debut single from Julia Michaels, Issues, shifts three places to 10.

Little Mix’s No More Sad Songs ft. Machine Gun Kelly vaults 34 places to Number 17 – this week’s biggest climber in the Top 40 and now officially the group’s 16th Top 20 single.

Further down, Kendrick Lamar claims this week’s highest new entry with Humble at 21, Calvin Harris’s Heatstroke ft. Young Thug, Pharrell and Ariana Grande is new at 25, and Starley’s Call On Me re-enters at 32, up 12 places.

Mass Effect: Andromeda stays number one

Monday, April 3rd, 2017

Bioware’s Mass Effect: Andromeda managed to secure its second straight week at number one in the UK retail charts, an accomplishment only Mass Effect 2 achieved previously in the series. With no real major new releases, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix was the best new entry managing a respectable fourth in the all formats chart. In fact, this was the 11th (and we’re still waiting for Kingdom Hearts III) retail release for the franchise in the UK. The original Kingdom Hearts on PS2 still holds the best opening week in franchise history.

It should be noted that as evident by the positions in the all formats and individual formats chart with Lego Worlds achieving third spot in spite of just being 8th and 9th in the individual chart, things were very tightly contested this week. Single format blockbusters Horizon and Breath of the Wild each fall two places, but are showing strong legs and maintain their status as this year’s most buys on their respectable platforms which should make for continued strong sales (particularly for Zelda as more and more people buy Switch).

Further down the charts, Destiny: The Collection re-entered the charts at number 24, presumably on the back of the Destiny 2 reveal.

All Formats (all prices):
1. Mass Effect: Andromeda / EA Games
2. Ghost Recon: Wildlands / Ubisoft
3. Lego Worlds / Warner Bros.
4. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix / Square Enix (new)
5. Grand Theft Auto V / Rockstar
6. Horizon: Zero Dawn / Sony
7. FIFA 17 / EA Sports
8. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild / Nintendo
9. Rocket League / 505 Games
10. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare / Activision

Individual Formats (units):
1. Mass Effect: Andromeda / PS4
2. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix / PS4 (new)
3. Mass Effect: Andromeda / Xbox One
4. Horizon: Zero Dawn / PS4
5. Ghost Recon: Wildlands / PS4
6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild / Switch
7. Ghost Recon: Wildlands / Xbox One
8. Lego Worlds / PS4
9. Lego Worlds / Xbox One
10. Grand Theft Auto V / PS4
