‘The Wolverine’ beats ‘Monsters University’ at UK box office

The Wolverine has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

Hugh Jackman’s sixth outing as the Marvel superhero earned £4.6 million to lead the chart ahead of Pixar‘s Monsters University.

The Wolverine‘s total falls short of the £6.6 million earned by its direct predecessor X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: First Class‘s £5.4 million.

Despicable Me 2 holds its position at number three, while The World’s End falls two places to number four. Jesse Eisenberg’s Now You See Me rounds out the top five, pushing its UK total to above the £9 million mark.

Elsewhere, the chart sees a new entry from Greta Gerwig’s Frances Ha. The indie comedy pulled in £150,689 from 60 locations to land in ninth place.

‘Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition’ tops gaming chart…

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has climbed to the top of the all-format weekly sales chart.

It ends The Last of Us‘s impressive six-week chart reign, and prevents Nintendo from nabbing its first Wii U number one with Pikmin 3.

Instead, Pikmin 3 enters at two, above The Last of Us, Animal Crossing and Mario and Luigi: Dream Team Bros.

New Super Luigi U is this week’s second highest new entry at 13, while Battlefield 3 re-enters the chart at 19.

Jahmene Douglas scores debut number one album with ‘Love Never Fails’

Jahmene Douglas has scored a debut number one album in the UK.

The X Factor finalist enters straight at the top spot with Love Never Fails, an album of soul and gospel cover versions.

Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines falls one place from last week’s number one, followed by Jay Z’s Magna Carter… Holy Grail at three.

Passenger climbs a spot to four with All the Little Lights, swapping places with Rod Stewart’s Time at five.

David Guetta leaps 16 places back into the Top 10 at eight with Nothing But the Beat. Gabrielle Aplin climbs up 19 spots to 17 with English Rain.

Selena Gomez earns a new entry at 14 with Stars Dance, while The Rolling Stones enter at 16 with Hyde Park Live.

F**k Buttons land at 36 with their latest album Slow Focus. Wildhearts frontman Ginger and singer Victoria Liedtke’s project Hey! Hello! enter at 37 with their self-titled LP.

‘Monsters University’ holds off ‘The World’s End’ at UK box office

Monsters University has topped the UK box office for the second consecutive weekend.

The Pixar prequel held off competition from Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy finale The World’s End to secure the number one spot with a £2.7 million haul.

The World’s End earned £2.1 million from its 530 locations nationwide, beating the £1.6 million opening from Shaun of the Dead in 2004 but falling behind Hot Fuzz‘s £5.9 million haul.

Last week’s runner-up Despicable Me 2 drops to third place, while Pacific Rim and Now You See Me round out the top five.

Elsewhere, Nicolas Cage and Vanessa Hudgens’s serial killer drama The Frozen Ground is the only other new release to make the top ten, landing at number nine with £89,515 from its 126 screening venues.

‘The Last of Us’ tops gaming chart for sixth week

The Last of Us is the all-format number one for a sixth week running.

The PS3 exclusive is the first game to have a six-week consecutive run since FIFA 12 and Black Ops 2.

It is followed by Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, which jumps three spots to second place.

3DS exclusives Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and Animal Crossing: New Leaf follow in third and fourth.

Elsewhere, new entry Dynasty Warriors 8 debuts in fifth place, while Max Payne 3 re-enters the chart in seventh.

FIFA 13 has also seen sales slip by 43%, dropping from fourth place to ninth in a single week.

Robin Thicke earns first UK No.1 album

Robin Thicke has scored his first UK number one album with Blurred Lines.

Following the huge success of the album’s title track, the Canadian singer achieves only his second Top 40 album in the UK. His previous entry was 2007’s The Evolution of Robin Thicke, which peaked at 30.

Thicke told The Official Charts Company of his chart-topping album: “Thank you for making my new album number one in the UK! This is a dream come true. I hope everyone enjoys it. Peace, love, and sexy!”

Jay Z slips one place from last week’s number one with Magna Carta… Holy Grail.

Pet Shop Boys land at three with their 12th studio album Electric. Rod Stewart drops two to four with Time, followed by Passenger’s All the Little Lights.

Cody Simpson earns his first UK Top 40 album with Surfer’s Paradise at 30.

‘Monsters University’ heads UK box office…

Monsters University has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

The Pixar prequel earned £3.4 million to hold off competition from last week’s number one Despicable Me 2 and secure the chart top spot.

Pacific Rim, the monsters vs robots blockbuster directed by Guillermo del Toro, matched its US box office placing by charting at number three with £2.19 million from its 494 locations.

Both Now You See Me and The Internship experienced sharp ticket sales drop-offs of more than 60% to complete the top five.

Elsewhere Bollywood picture Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is the only other new release to make the top ten, landing at number nine with £89,348.

‘The Last of Us’ tops chart above ‘Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros’

The Last of Us is the all-format number one for a fifth week running.

If the Sony exclusive can retain its place at the top of the chart for another week, it will be the first game to enjoy a six-week chart reign since Black Ops 2 and FIFA 13.

It is followed by a Nintendo 3DS double-header of Animal Crossing: New Leaf in second and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros, which makes its debut in third.

Elsewhere, Aliens: Colonial Marines climbs 12 places to re-enter the chart at ten, above Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes and Need for Speed: Most Wanted.

Jay-Z earns first UK number one album

Jay-Z has scored his first chart-topping album in the UK with Magna Carta… Holy Grail.

The US rapper’s 12th studio album landed straight at the top of chart, following his headline performance at London’s Wireless Festival on Saturday (July 13).

His previous peak as a solo artist was at four with 2009’s Blueprint III, while Watch the Throne with Kanye West reached number three.

Rod Stewart climbs back three spots to two with Time, following a BBC Imagine documentary on Tuesday.

Passenger also rises three places to three with All the Little Things, while Michael Bublé slips two to four with To Be Loved. Mumford & Sons drop four from last week’s top spot to five with Babel, in its 42nd week in the chart.

Imagine Dragons leap 18 spots to 12 with their debut album Night Visions. Justin Timberlake climbs back 14 places to 28 with The 20/20 Experience.

Jamie Cullum enjoys the biggest climb at 40, soaring 97 places with Momentum, after his cover of ‘Pure Imagination’ was used in a BBC montage during Andy Murray’s Wimbledon win.

Despicable Me 2 remains top of UK box office…

Despicable Me 2 has spent its second weekend at the top of the UK box office chart.

The Steve Carell-voiced animation held off competition from the two big new releases Now You See Me and The Internship to secure top spot.

Brad Pitt’s zombie blockbuster World War Z drops down a place to number four, while Man of Steel completes the top five.

The Superman reboot, starring Henry Cavill, Amy Adams and Russell Crowe, has now earned more than £28 million from UK screens.

Elsewhere, the chart sees new entries from Sofia Coppola’s latest film The Bling Ring and Bollywood titles Lootera and Singam II. The latter delivered an impressive £4,700 location average from its 14 cinema venues.
