Planet of the Apes beats Hercules at UK box office…

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has held off competition from Hercules to top the UK box office for the second consecutive weekend.

The Matt Reeves-directed Apes sequel earned £3.7 million to secure the top spot ahead of Dwayne Johnson’s latest release and horror sequel The Purge: Anarchy.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 sits at number four after five weeks on release, while Transformers: Age of Extinction rounds out the top five.

The only chart climber is Boyhood, now on its third weekend on release, which moves up a place to number seven.

Elsewhere, the chart sees new entries from family adventure Earth to Echo, Bollywood movie Kick and The House of Magic.

Watch Dogs retains all-format top spot

Watch Dogs has retained its place at the top of the all-format gaming chart.

Ubisoft’s open-world hacking release celebrates its third consecutive week as number one and its sixth week in total.

It is once again followed by FIFA 14 in second, while Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition climbs to third and Sniper Elite 3 moves up one place to fourth.

Coinciding with the DVD and Blu-ray release of The Lego Movie, the video game tie-in climbs seven places to take fifth.

Elsewhere, Terraria and Pokemon: Black re-enter the chart at 19 and 20.

A lack of new releases for the second week running sees the overall market drop by 3%. It’s the second lowest week for units sold and the lowest week in terms of overall revenue.

Planet of the Apes beats Transformers at UK box office

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has topped the UK box office on its debut weekend on release.

The action sequel ended Transformers: Age of Extinction‘s run in first place, taking in £8.7m to secure top spot ahead of How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Dawn easily outperformed its predecessor, which debuted to £5.8 million in 2011.

This week’s box office also saw two live releases make it into the top five – a first since cinemas started broadcasting concert, stage or sporting events.

Monty Python Live (Mostly) earned a staggering £1.2 million from its theatrical transmission from London’s O2, while Andre Rieu’s 2014 Maastricht concert followed closely behind with £830,586.

Elsewhere, Pudsey the Dog: The Movie debuted at number seven with £446,450 in ticket sales.

Watch Dogs celebrates fifth week on top of gaming charts

Watch Dogs has retained its place at the top of the all-format gaming chart.

Ubisoft’s open-world action game celebrates its fifth week at the top of the chart, despite a 12% drop in weekly sales.

It is followed by chart regulars FIFA 14 and Call of Duty: Ghosts, the latter of which climbs three spots to take third.

Wolfenstein: The New Order remains fourth, while Sniper Elite 3 and a Minecraft double-header chart at five, six and seven.

Mario Kart 8 climbs six places to re-enter the top ten, below Titanfall and Battlefield 4. Elsewhere, Football Manager 2014 re-enters the chart at 20.

With a lack of new releases, overall units sold are down by 10% on the previous week, as the market value drops by 14%.

Rixton win UK singles chart with debut release

Rixton have claimed a number one single with debut release ‘Me and My Broken Heart’.

The Manchester band knock will.i.am off the top spot after one week at number one.

‘Problem’ by Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea is a non-mover at number two.

Last week’s number one ‘It’s My Birthday’ by will.i.am is down two spaces to number three, while Ella Henderson’s ‘Ghost’ is down one to number four.

‘Budapest’ by George Ezra stays at number five.

Nicole Scherzinger’s new single ‘Your Love’ is new in at number six. It is the former-X Factor judge’s tenth solo UK top ten single.

Rudamental collaborator Ella Eyre is new in at 16 with ‘If I Go’.

The final new entry in the top 40 comes from DJ and producer Kove, who’s single ‘Way We Are ft. Melissa Steel’ slots in at 30.

Vance Joy’s ‘Riptide’ is the week’s highest climber, rising twenty four places to 37.

Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’ also jumps six places to 23.

Transformers: Age of Extinction tops UK box offfice

Transformers: Age of Extinction won the battle of the sequels at the UK box office over the weekend.

Michael Bay’s robot blockbuster earned more than £11.7 million to hold off competition from How to Train Your Dragon 2 and secure first place.

Transformers posted the biggest opening of 2014 in the UK, but had the benefit of a nine-day opening after debuting on a Saturday (July 5) and not being eligible for last week’s chart.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 has already been on release in Scotland and Ireland for two weeks, but expanding nationwide it racked up an impressive £7.7 million – a significant uptick from the £4.8 million earned by its predecessor when it opened in 2010.

Elsewhere in the week’s chart, musical drama Begin Again debuted at number five with £456,438 and Richard Linklater’s highly praised Boyhood secured seventh place with £312,747.

Watch Dogs returns to top the chart for a fourth week

Watch Dogs has returned to the top of the all-format gaming chart.

After a brief absence from the chart summit, Ubisoft’s open-world action game tops the chart for a fourth week.

Stealth-based shooter and former number one Sniper Elite 3 drops to second, above FIFA 14 and Wolfenstein: The New Order.

Elsewhere, Minecraft moves up the chart on both Xbox 360 and PS3, Tomodachi Life registers its highest chart position at nine, while a price promotion sees Battlefield 4 climb five places to ten.

Outside of the top-ten, 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil drops seven places to 15, above Mario Kart 8 and Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare.

will.i.am claims 10th UK number one single…

will.i.am has claimed his tenth UK number one single.

‘It’s My Birthday’, which features Cody Wise, has debuted at number one in the chart, pushing Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea down to number two with ‘Problem’.

will.i.am scored his first UK number one in 2003 with The Black Eyed Peas’ ‘Where is the Love?’. He has also claimed five number ones as a solo artist.

Ella Henderson’s ‘Ghost’ also moves down one spot to number three, while The Vamps climb 35 places to number four with ‘Somebody To You’.

‘Budapest’ by George Ezra completes the top five, after dropping two places.

Jess Glynne enters the chart at number six with her debut solo release ‘Right Here’. She also has two number one singles after providing vocals for Clean Bandit’s ‘Rather Be’ and Route 94’s ‘My Love’.

MKTO, also known as Malcolm Kelly and Tony Oller, have climbed 71 places with ‘Classic’ and are at number 24.

Matrix and Futurebound enter the top 40 at 38, with ‘Don’t Look Back’.

Mrs Brown’s Boys spends second weekend atop UK box office

Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie has topped the UK box office for the second weekend running.

Brendan O’Carroll’s big-screen spin on his hit BBC sitcom earned £2.1 million to secure first place ahead of The Fault in Our Stars. The film has now grossed more than £9.2 million from UK and Ireland cinemas after opening on June 27.

Transformers: Age of Extinction pulled in £4.7 million over the weekend after bowing on July 5, but isn’t eligible for this week’s chart as this is drawn from Friday to Sunday totals.

Michael Bay’s sequel is a certainty to take the number one slot next week thanks to its nine-day opening run.

Elsewhere in this week’s chart, Melissa McCarthy’s comedy Tammy is the highest new release, charting at number five with £471,429. The total falls short of matching the comedy star’s two most recent films from 2013, The Heat (£2.5 million) and Identity Thief (£1.3 million).

Sniper Elite 3 remains top of all-format chart

Sniper Elite 3 has retained its place at the top of the all-format gaming chart.

Like its predecessor, Sniper Elite 3 manages a second week at the top of the chart, once again outranking Watch Dogs in second.

FIFA 14 and 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil both enjoy a surge in sales, rising to third and eighth respectively.

Titanfall remains fourth, Wolfenstein stays fifth, while Call of Duty: Ghosts climbs to six.

Nintendo 3DS game Tomodachi Life is one of this week’s biggest movers, jumping five places to 11 following a promotional push.

Despite a lack of new releases, the overall market only dropped by 3% thanks to healthy sales in the budget sector.
