Billy Elliot beats The Equalizer at UK box office

Billy Elliot: The Musical has topped the UK box office.

The live cinema broadcast of the stage show earned £1.9 million to narrowly edge past Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer and secure first place in UK theatres.

This marks the first time a live cinema event has made it to the number one spot in the UK.

Last week’s number one movie The Boxtrolls slips to number three ahead of new release What We Did On Our Holiday. A Walk Among the Tombstones rounds out the top five.

FIFA 15 accounts for 80% of last week’s gaming sales

FIFA 15 has ended Destiny‘s two-week chart reign.

EA’s latest football sim accounts for 80% of all weekly software sales, and 87% of all revenue generated.

Factoring in last year’s stifled release, this year’s FIFA has earned approximately 6% more revenue than FIFA 14.

PS4 and Xbox One FIFA 15 sales make up 54% of all units sold, with the PS4 version selling a fraction more than its Xbox counterpart.

Elsewhere in the chart, Destiny drops to second, above Disney Infinity 2.0 in third.

Nintendo 3DS role-playing game Fantasy Life debuts at eight.

‘Bang Bang’ tops the UK singles chart

Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj have topped the Official UK Singles Chart with ‘Bang Bang’.

Having already enjoyed chart success in the US, Europe and Australia, the trio top the UK chart after last week’s number one ‘Changing’ by Sigma and Paloma Faith.

‘Bang Bang’ is Jessie J’s first number one since ‘Domino’ in 2011 and marks the first time Minaj has topped the chart in the UK.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake it Off’ climbs to third, ‘Blame’ by Calvin Harris and John Newman drops to fourth, while Lilly Wood and Robin Schulz’s ‘Prayer in C’ charts at five.

With 1.17 million streams, Meghan Trainor becomes the first act in history to enter the top 40 on streams alone with ‘All About That Bass’ at 33. The song makes its full debut next week.

Elsewhere, Shift K3Y’s ‘I Know’ is at 25, above Hozier’s ‘Take Me To Church’, which climbs seven places to number 28.

With Sheridan Smith’s Cilla Black biopic proving popular on ITV, the singer’s ‘Anyone Who Had a Heart’ narrowly misses out on a place in the Top 40, charting instead at 47.

‘Anyone Who Had a Heart’ previously topped the chart in 1964.

Boxtrolls spend second week at top of UK box office

The Boxtrolls has topped the UK box office for the second consecutive weekend.

Laika’s latest animation pulls in £1.3 million to top the chart ahead of Liam Neeson’s latest thriller A Walk Among the Tombstones.

Pride holds its position at number three, while last week’s runner-up Lucy falls to number four. Scarlett Johansson’s blockbuster has now earned more than £13 million from its impressive UK cinema run.

The Riot Club, a new release starring Sam Claflin, Max Irons and Douglas Booth, rounds out the top five.

Elsewhere, the only other new entry into the top ten is 20,000 Days on Earth, a quasi-documentary about musician Nick Cave.

Destiny success continues to boost PS4 hardware sales

Destiny has topped the all-format gaming chart for a second week running.

The online shooter continues to boost PS4 console sales, with 72% of its PS4 sales coming via the exclusive hardware bundle.

Destiny comfortably charts above Disney Infinity 2.0 in second and Hyrule Warriors in third.

The Disney Infinity sequel sells 32% more copies than its predecessor during their first week on sale.

Elsewhere, Watch Dogs drops to fourth, above The Sims 4 and Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call is this week’s third highest new entry at 17.

Sigma hit Number 1 single spot with ‘Changing’

Sigma have claimed their second UK Number 1 with ‘Changing’.

The drum and bass duo’s track, featuring Paloma Faith, climbs 114 places after its full download release to reach the Number 1 spot.

Sigma is also the first act to achieve first-week sales of more than 100,000 with consecutive singles in 2014.

‘Changing’ knocks last week’s number one ‘Blame’ by Calvin Harris and John Newman down to number two.

Lilly Wood and Robin Schulz’s single ‘Prayer In C’ is at 3.

Professor Green is new in at four with ‘Lullaby’ and Taylor Swift completes the Top 5 with ‘Shake It Off’.

George Ezra scores his second UK Top 10 single with ‘Blame It On Me’, which climbs to 10.

Irish musician Hozier’s single peaks at number 35, having spent eight weeks in the Top 100.

The Boxtrolls knocks Sex Tape off UK box office top spot

The Boxtrolls has claimed the top spot in the UK box office chart.

The eccentric animation, starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Richard Ayoade, knocks Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel’s Sex Tape off the top after one week, earning £2m in its opening weekend.

Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy remains at two with takings of £812,000, while Matthew Warchus’ Pride is new in at three with over £718,000.

Sex Tape slips down to four with £673,000, while Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s A Most Wanted Man enters at five with £610,000.

Destiny is biggest ever new game franchise

Destiny has seen the biggest ever new franchise launch in the UK, according to GfK Chart-Track.

The Bungie-developed, online-only game beats a record set by Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs earlier this year.

The game saw an even split on PlayStation and Xbox, with PS4 selling the most with 46%, followed by 36% on Xbox One, 14% on Xbox 360 and PS3 4%.

Meanwhile, last week’s number one The Sims 4 drops to second place ahead of Watch Dogs in third, while Call of Duty: Ghosts is in fifth.

The Last of Us: Remastered and Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition split one place each to fifth and sixth.

There are two other new entries in the top ten, with NHL 15 and Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution debuting in seventh and 10th respectively.

Meanwhile, Infamous: Last Light‘s retail release debuted in 17th place, while retailer promotions for The Borderlands Collection and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary see them both re-enter the top 40 in 24th and 29th.

Last week Activision claimed Destiny was the biggest ever new franchise launch, selling a combined $500m through to retailers and digital stores.

In 2013, Call of Duty: Ghosts shipped $1 billion worth of units to retail, while GTA 5 generated $1 billion in three days to become the fastest-selling entertainment product.

Calvin Harris and John Newman hit Number 1 single spot

Calvin Harris has earned his fifth Official Singles Chart Number 1 as a lead artist – his seventh Number 1 in total – with ‘Blame’.

The DJ previously hit the top spot with ‘I’m Not Alone’ (2009), ‘Sweet Nothing’ (2012), ‘Under Control’ (2013) and ‘Summer’ (2014).

The single, which features John Newman as vocalist, is Newman’s third Number 1 following 2012’s Rudimental collaboration ‘Feel The Love’ and last year’s ‘Love Me Again’.

Last week’s Number 1 Lilly Wood and Robin Schulz’s ‘Prayer in C’ slips to Number 2 this week, but claims the title of the week’s most streamed track.

Sam Smith’s ‘I’m Not The Only One’ rises two places to Number 3, while Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ climbs from Number 6 to 4, spending its fourth consecutive week in the Top 10.

Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora complete the Top 5, dropping one place with ‘Black Widow’.

The highest new entry after ‘Blame’ is ‘Walking With Elephants’ by house producer Ten Walls, which climbs 178 places to Number 6.

Chris Brown secures his tenth UK Top 10 with ‘New Flame’, featuring Usher and Rick Ross, which is at Number 10. Fall Out Boy are also new in at Number 22, with ‘Centuries’.

The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing have also impacted on this week’s charts. A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera’s ‘Say Something’ re-enters the charts at Number 26 following its performance on the ITV singing contest.

Meanwhile, following their performance on Strictly, Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer climb 31 places to Number 7 with ‘Amnesia’.

Sex Tape knocks Lucy off UK box office top spot

Sex Tape has claimed the top spot in the UK box office chart.

Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel’s comedy caper knocked Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy off the top after two weeks, earning over £1.4 million in its opening weekend.

Lucy dropped to two with takings of £1.2m, while Colin Firth’s Before I Go To Sleep entered at three with over £790,000.

Helen Mirren’s Hundred-Foot Journey is new at four with over £694,000.

Meanwhile, Dan Stevens thriller The Guest landed in eighth place with takings of over £313,000.
