‘The Croods’ holds off ‘GI Joe: Retaliation’ at UK box office

The Croods has spent its third weekend at the top of the UK box office.

DreamWorks’s latest animation again held off competition from action sequel GI Joe: Retaliation to secure the number one spot.

Keri Russell horror film Dark Skies is the highest charting new release, landing at number three with takings of £1 million.

Danny Boyle’s Trance and Jack the Giant Slayer both fall down one place from last week to complete the top five.

Elsewhere, the top ten sees new entries from Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers and the Jennifer Garner-led family film The Odd Life of Timothy Green.

The Croods has spent its second weekend at the top of the UK box office.

DreamWorks’ latest animation held off competition from blockbuster GI Joe: Retaliation and Trance to lead the chart over the Easter weekend.

Jack the Giant Slayer slipped down two places to number four, while new release The Host completes the top five.

Elsewhere, the top ten sees new entries from the 3D re-release of Finding Nemo and François Ozon’s drama In the House.

‘The Croods’ beats ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’

The Croods has opened in first place at the UK box office.

The latest animated movie from DreamWorks, featuring the voices of Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone, opened to £5.3 million to beat Bryan Singer’s new release Jack the Giant Slayer to first place.

Jack‘s opening haul of £1.5 million is less than the £1.9 million earned by John Carter this time last year.

Oz the Great and Powerful, last week’s number one movie, slipped down to third place. New comedy Identity Thief debuts at number four, while Side Effects rounds out the top five.

Elsewhere, Nicolas Cage’s thriller Stolen, which went direct-to-video in the US, opened at number seven with £202,373.

‘Oz’ retains box office top spot

Oz the Great and Powerful has topped the UK box office for the second weekend running.

Disney’s fantasy blockbuster, starring James Franco and Mila Kunis, held off competition from Side Effects and new release Welcome to the Punch to secure first place.

Wreck-It Ralph falls a place to number four, while Jason Statham’s action-thriller Parker completes the top five.

Jim Carrey and Steve Carell’s The Incredible Burt Wonderstone debuts at number six ahead of Mama and the remake of ’80s action movie Red Dawn.

Elsewhere, new films The Paperboy, Ken Loach’s The Spirit of 45 and Maniac all land outside the top 10 on their first weekends on release.

Oz the Great and Powerful has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

Disney’s prequel to The Wizard of Oz earned more than £3.7 million to secure top spot ahead of Steven Soderbergh’s new thriller Side Effects.

Disney’s latest animation Wreck-It Ralph falls to third spot, while Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez’s Parker is a new entry at number four.

Jessica Chastain’s horror Mama completes the top five.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, last week’s number one movie, suffered a 66% drop in ticket sales to fall down to number six with £507,759.

‘Hansel & Gretel’ slays ‘Wreck-It Ralph’

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

The action-horror, starring Gemma Arterton and Jeremy Renner, earned £1.5 million from 404 locations to secure first place ahead of Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph.

Jessica Chastain horror Mama holds its place at number three, taking in more than £1 million to chart ahead of A Good Day to Die Hard and new release Safe Haven.

Les Misérables is in sixth place, Mark Wahlberg’s crime drama Broken City is at number seven, and Argo re-enters the top ten on the back of its ‘Best Picture’ Oscar win with £408,903.

Elsewhere, new releases Arbitrage and Stoker also feature in the chart.

Wreck-It Ralph tops Die Hard at UK box office

Wreck-It Ralph has returned to the top of the UK box office, beating Bruce Willis’ A Good Day to Die Hard.

The Disney movie maintained its takings of £3.4 million to leap up a spot into pole position. The Die Hard sequel dropped 64% in ticket sales to fall into second place.

Mama, the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror starring Jessica Chastain, is a new entry at number three with £1.5 million. Oscar-winning musical Les Misérables holds its place at number four, while I Give It A Year completes the top five.

Elsewhere, new releases Cloud Atlas and Song for Marion enter the top ten at numbers six and eight respectively.

This week will see the release of high-profile films Broken City, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Safe Haven and Stoker, all of which will be looking to make a dent in the top ten.

‘A Good Day to Die Hard’ beats ‘Wreck-It Ralph’

A Good Day to Die Hard has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

The Valentine’s Day release, which sees Bruce Willis’ John McClane head to Russia, earned more than £4.5 million in ticket sales to see off Disney animation Wreck-It Ralph.

This Is 40, the latest comedy from Judd Apatow, debuts at number three with £1.2 million ahead of musical Les Misérables. Beautiful Creatures, the supernatural teen romance starring Alice Englert, completes the top five with earnings of £1.1 million.

Elsewhere, children’s animated movie Sammy’s Great Escape is the only other new release to make the top ten, debuting at number eight with £519,049.

Outside the top 10 Keanu Reeves’s documentary Side by Side pulled in £3,207 from seven locations, while Danny Dyer’s Run for Your Wife earned just £602 from nine cinema venues.

‘Wreck-It Ralph’ topples ‘Les Misérables’

Wreck-It Ralph has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

Disney’s latest 3D animated movie, featuring the voices of John C Reilly and Sarah Silverman, earned £4.5 million to end Les Misérables‘ four-week stint at the top of the UK box office.

Wreck-It Ralph‘s opening haul is the biggest three-day debut for an animated movie since Ice Age 4 last July.

Les Mis falls down a place to number two ahead of British romantic comedy I Give It A Year, which posted an impressive £1.4 million opening weekend tally. Django Unchained is at number four, while Flight rounds out the top five.

Elsewhere, Warm Bodies failed to match its US box office success in the UK, landing at number six with £895,509. Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren’s Hitchcock is the only other new release to dent the top ten, entering at number eight.

‘Les Misérables’ retains UK box office No.1

Les Misérables has topped the UK box office for the fourth consecutive weekend.

Tom Hooper’s movie musical – starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe – pulls in £2.7 million to see off competition from Django Unchained and Denzel Washington’s new drama Flight.

Steven Spielberg’s Daniel Day-Lewis-led biopic Lincoln charts at number four, while Ang Lee’s fantastical drama Life of Pi completes the top five.

Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts’s The Impossible continues its strong box office run, taking in £758,024 to land at number six. The drama has now grossed more than £12 million in the UK since its cinema release on January 1.

Elsewhere, Bullet to the Head debuts at number nine and the critically-panned Movie 43 slips down three places – losing 50% in ticket sales – to number ten.
