‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ beats ‘Side Effects’

Oz the Great and Powerful has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

Disney’s prequel to The Wizard of Oz earned more than £3.7 million to secure top spot ahead of Steven Soderbergh’s new thriller Side Effects.

Disney’s latest animation Wreck-It Ralph falls to third spot, while Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez’s Parker is a new entry at number four.

Jessica Chastain’s horror Mama completes the top five.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, last week’s number one movie, suffered a 66% drop in ticket sales to fall down to number six with £507,759.
