‘Hansel & Gretel’ slays ‘Wreck-It Ralph’

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

The action-horror, starring Gemma Arterton and Jeremy Renner, earned £1.5 million from 404 locations to secure first place ahead of Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph.

Jessica Chastain horror Mama holds its place at number three, taking in more than £1 million to chart ahead of A Good Day to Die Hard and new release Safe Haven.

Les Misérables is in sixth place, Mark Wahlberg’s crime drama Broken City is at number seven, and Argo re-enters the top ten on the back of its ‘Best Picture’ Oscar win with £408,903.

Elsewhere, new releases Arbitrage and Stoker also feature in the chart.
