Call of Duty: WWII extends run at the top of the UK charts

Monday, December 11th, 2017

The last game to make it to six weeks at the top of the UK retail charts was, funnily enough, Black Ops 3, as Call of Duty’s return to historical warfare has proven popular with players this year. No doubt holiday sales ahead of Christmas have helped keep Activision’s shooter sitting pretty in first place, with EA taking bronze and silver with FIFA 18 and Star Wars Battlefront II respectively.

It’s not a great week for debuts; Rocket League: Collector’s Edition landed in 21st, but you have to go all the way back to 37th to catch sight of Hello Neighbor, which scraped into the top forty follow its release last week. The GfK Chart-Track top ten is, therefore, pretty static, but you can read it in full below:

1. Call of Duty: WWII / Activision
2. FIFA 18 / EA
3. Star Wars Battlefront II / EA
4. Super Mario Odyssey / Nintendo
5. Assassin’s Creed Origins / Ubisoft
6. Grand Theft Auto V / Take-Two
7. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe / Nintendo
8. WWE 2K18 / Take-Two
9. The Sims 4 / EA
10. Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 / Warner Bros.

Call of Duty continues its reign on the top of UK sales

Monday, December 4th, 2017

There wasn’t a ton of movement this week in the UK video game charts as Call of Duty: WWII claims its fifth straight number one (equal to Crash Bandicoot: Nsane Trilogy for most consecutive number ones in 2017). None of the first five games in the all formats standings changed their positions, and we’re likely looking at the main challenger for the Christmas crown, maybe it’s even a two horse race between Call of Duty: WWII and FIFA 18. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was the only real notable new release and it managed 19th spot, which is in line with what the franchise has done in the past, it was always going to struggle against the big holiday sellers. Perhaps it is also notable that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has snuck back up into the top 10, suggesting it’s the first game many new Switch owners are getting.

All Formats:
1. Call of Duty: WWII / Activision
2. FIFA 18 / EA
3. Gran Turismo Sport / Sony
4. Star Wars Battlefront II / EA
5. Assassin’s Creed Origins / Ubisoft
6. Super Mario Odyssey / Nintendo
7. Forza Motorsport 7 / Microsoft
8. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe / Nintendo
9. Grand Theft Auto V / Take-Two
10. Crash Bandicoot: Nsane Trilogy / Activision

Individual Formats (units):
1. Call of Duty: WWII / PS4
2. FIFA 18 / PS4
3. Gran Turismo Sport / PS4
4. Call of Duty: WWII / Xbox One
5. Star Wars Battlefront II / PS4
6. Super Mario Odyssey / Switch
7. FIFA 18 / Xbox One
8. Forza Motorsport 7 / Xbox One
9. Assassin’s Creed Origins / Xbox One

Call of Duty hangs onto number one yet again

Monday, November 27th, 2017

Call of Duty: WWII has had a strong start in life, being number one for the last three weeks, and now it’s got a fourth week at number one, meaning November is definitely the month for Activision’s shooter, despite other big releases like Star Wars Battlefront II coming out to contest it.

In second place sits FIFA 18, a game that’s on the rise, much like third place entry Gran Turismo Sport. Star Wars Battlefront II, however, drops to fourth, which is in fact that only entry in the top 10 to drop places rather than gain them.

You can see the top 10 in full down below:

1. Call of Duty: WWII / Activision
2. FIFA 18 / EA Sports
3. Gran Turismo Sport / Sony
4. Star Wars Battlefront II / EA Games
5. Assassin’s Creed Origins / Ubisoft
6. Forza Motorsport 7 / Microsoft
7. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus / Bethesda
8. Super Mario Odyssey / Nintendo
9. Fallout 4 / Bethesda
10. Need for Speed Payback / EA Games

Call of Duty holds off Star Wars Battlefront II

Monday, November 20th, 2017

Call of Duty: WWII has held off the march of the stormtroopers in Star Wars Battlefront II to make it three weeks on top of the UK’s sales charts.

It’s a big win for Activision, with the company enjoying a third successive week at the top, but no doubt people will point to the controversy surrounding loot boxes in Battlefront II as one of the factors to take into consideration. It’s also worth noting once again that these are retail charts and don’t take digital sales into account.

In terms of brand new releases, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 made this week’s top ten, but otherwise, it was very much a tale of re-releases and remasters.

The two Ultra Pokémon games (Sun and Moon) both debuted in the top five, The Sims 4 launched straight into this week’s top ten thanks to its console release, and we also saw a top ten debut for the remastered version of L.A. Noire. Even the VR-version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim squeezed into the top twenty (at No19).

Here’s the GfK Chart-Track multiplatform top ten:

1. Call of Duty: WWII / Activision
2. Star Wars Battlefront II / EA
3. FIFA 18 / EA
4. Pokémon Ultra Sun / Nintendo
5. Pokémon Ultra Moon / Nintendo
6. Assassin’s Creed Origins / Ubisoft
7. The Sims 4 / EA
8. L.A. Noire / Take 2
9. Super Mario Odyssey / Nintendo
10. Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 / Warner Bros.

Update: Games Industry is reporting that Battlefront II’s first week sales are 50% lower than those of 2016’s Battlefield 1, and 61% lower than the first Battlefront back in 2015. Naturally, the rise of digital sales will soften the blow somewhat for EA, but even a significant rise in that area won’t be enough to gloss over the fact that the Star Wars-themed shooter hasn’t met expectations.

Call of Duty remains the top selling game

Monday, November 13th, 2017

Last week, Call of Duty: WWII beat out is predecessor Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare by 57% in unit sales (21% in revenue due out much of IW’s sales being expensive SKUs on launch week), and this week proved its got legs as it only lost 43% of its first week sales.

This week’s new releases didn’t set the world on fire, as lackluster reviews for Need for Speed Payback and Sonic Forces no doubt had an effect. Still, they came in at fourth and fifth respectively. Football Manager 2018 came in at tenth, a respectable showing for the PC exclusive. Super Lucky’s Tale (23) and The Sims 4: Cats and Dogs (27) were the other brand new entries in the charts. Doom’s release on Switch propelled the title to 16th in the all formats chart, while it scored the 23rd spot in the individual list.

All Formats:

1. Call of Duty: WWII / Activision
2. FIFA 18 / EA Sports
3. Assassin’s Creed Origins / Ubisoft
4. Need for Speed Payback / EA Games (new)
5. Sonic Forces / Sega (new)
6. Super Mario Odyssey / Nintendo
7. Forza Motorsport 7 / Microsoft
8. Forza Horizon 3 / Microsoft
9. Gran Turismo Sport / Sony
10. Football Manager 2018 / Sega (new)

Another year, another first place debut for Call of Duty

Monday, November 6th, 2017

Call of Duty: WWII was released just last week (have you checked out our review yet?) and we now know that the shooter has debuted at the top of the UK charts, much like its predecessor Infinite Warfare.

Assassin’s Creed Origins therefore slips from first to second, with FIFA 18 close behind, edging out Super Mario Odyssey in fourth. If you want to see the top 10 in full, you can do so down below:

Assassin’s Creed Origins beats out Mario and Wolfenstein

Monday, October 30th, 2017

Last week was absolutely massive in terms of new releases as we got a new sandbox Mario game, a new Assassin’s Creed and something as rare as a singleplayer-only AAA shooter in Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. Assassin’s Creed Origins almost sold as well as the last game in the series, Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, during launch week in terms of retail unit sales, but surpassed it in terms of revenue thanks to great sales of more expensive collector’s editions. In second place was Super Mario Odyssey, though it did beat out the PS4 version of Assassin’s Creed Origins in the single SKU chart. The unit split for Assassin’s Creed Origins was 60/40 in favour of PS4.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus managed fourth place behind FIFA 18. Of course, for Assassin’s Creed, Syndicate level sales aren’t what Ubisoft are aspiring to so it remains to be seen if digital sales and word of mouth will help Origins in the long-run. As for Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus dropping on the same day as Mario and Assassin’s Creed, and just the week prior to a World War II-themed Call of Duty, saw the game drop 60 percent of the predecessor first-week sales. Granted that also came out on PS3 and Xbox 360, but still, it has to be very disappointing reading for Bethesda.

As suspected Super Mario Odyssey became the biggest Switch launch to date, and in fact, it is bigger than any game launch on Wii U and Nintendo’s 6th best game launch in the UK overall. As you’d suspect a big release like that helped bump up hardware sales (+64%) as the console now sits in more than 300,000 homes in the UK (according to GamesIndustry.biz).

Ubisoft also released the latest edition of Just Dance, Just Dance 2018 and it only managed the 23rd spot in the all formats chart. Curiously it did the most business on Wii (!), just ahead of the Switch version.

All Formats:

1. Assassin’s Creed Origins / Ubisoft (new)
2. Super Mario Odyssey / Nintendo (new)
3. FIFA 18 / EA Sports
4. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus / Bethesda (new)
5. Gran Turismo Sport / Sony
6. Grand Theft Auto V / Rockstar
7. Destiny 2 / Activision
8. South Park: The Fractured But Whole / Ubisoft
9. Middle-earth: Shadow of War / Warner Bros.
10. WWE 2K17 / 2K Sports

Gran Turismo Sport races past FIFA into first

Monday, October 23rd, 2017

Sony and Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo Sport has had a dream debut in the UK charts this week, racing into number one with the series’ first outing on PS4, dropping previous week’s number one FIFA 18 to number two.

Another debut is Ubisoft’s South Park: The Fractured but Whole, coming in at number three, with WWE 2K18 debuting at number four, with sales units down compared to WWE 2K17 last year.
