‘Thor: The Dark World’ hammers competition at UK box office

Thor: The Dark World has topped the UK box office on its debut weekend on release.

The Marvel sequel, starring Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, earned £8.6 million to easily beat surge past last week’s chart topper Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and secure first place.

The Dark World‘s total easily surpasses that of its superhero predecessor, which £5.45 million when it opened in April 2011.

Captain Phillips slips down a place to number three, while Judi Dench and Steve Coogan’s Philomena is a new entry at number four.

Dreamworks’s animated snail-racer Turbo, featuring the voice talents of Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson, rounds out the top five.

Elsewhere, Bollywood film Krrish 3 is a new entry at number eight, earning £408,624 from 95 locations.

‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2’ tops UK box office

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

The animated sequel earned £3.6 million from its 510 locations to secure first place ahead of Captain Phillips and new release Bad Grandpa.

The Cloudy sequel’s opening total easily outpaces that of its predecessor, which pulled in £1.58 million in September 2009.

Last week’s number one movie Turbo slips down to fourth spot, while Ender’s Game completes the top five with £1.16 million.

Elsewhere, James Corden’s Paul Potts biopic One Chance lands in sixth place with £717,857.

‘Turbo’ races past ‘Captain Phillips’ at UK box office

Turbo has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

DreamWorks and 20th Century Fox’s 3D animation, featuring the voices of Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson, earned £3.8 million (including £1.7 million from previews) to secure first place ahead of Captain Phillips.

Tom Hanks’s true-life hijacking drama pulled in £3.4 million (£461,436 from previews) over the weekend, putting it ahead of the week’s other big new release Escape Plan.

Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s team-up delivered £961,470, while last week’s number one Prisoners and Sunshine on Leith round out the top five.

Elsewhere, Bollywood release Boss debuts at number nine with £235,086 from its 63 locations.

‘Prisoners’ retains box office top spot

Prisoners has topped the UK box office chart for the third week running.

Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal’s thriller earned just shy of £1 million to hold off competition from Sunshine on Leith to secure the number one spot.

Dexter Fletcher’s Proclaimers musical showed impressive staying power on its second week on full release, seeing only a 5% drop in ticket sales. The film has now earned more than £2 million from UK cinemas.

Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine sits at number three ahead of Filth, while Formula 1 drama Rush rounds out the top five.

Elsewhere, new releases The Fifth Estate and Le Week-End enter the chart at numbers six and seven respectively.

‘Prisoners’ beats ‘Filth’ to hold UK box office lead

Prisoners has topped the UK box office for the second consecutive weekend.

Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal’s dark thriller earned more than £1 million to see off competition from Filth and Sunshine on Leith to secure first place.

Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine lands in fourth place and rounding out the top five is Ron Howard’s Rush, which falls from second place to number five.

Elsewhere, several new releases failed to trouble the top ten. Saoirse Ronan’s How I Live Now landed at number 12 with £232,400 in box office takings, while Thanks for Sharing and Metallica: Through the Never reach numbers 13 and 14 respectively.

‘Insidious 2’ beats ‘Rush’ at UK box office

Insidious: Chapter 2 has topped the UK box office on its debut weekend on release.

The horror sequel, starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, held off strong competition from Ron Howard’s Rush and action-thriller White House Down to secure first place.

The new Insidious‘s £2.8 million gross is double that of its predecessor, which opened in third place in 2011 behind Thor and Fast & Furious 5.

Elsewhere in this week’s chart About Time slipped down to number four, while animation Justin and the Knights of Valour rounded out the top five.

The biggest faller was Vin Diesel’s Riddick, which dipped 73% in ticket sales to tumble down to number nine.

‘About Time’ topples 1D from UK top spot

Richard Curtis’ directorial swan song About Time has topped the UK box office charts after its first weekend on release.

The romantic comedy made a total of £1.7 million, narrowly out-stripping the week’s other new entry Riddick which brought in £1.4 million.

One Direction: This Is Us fell to third place with £1.1 million following its strong opening.

Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain fell to seventh place, while Despicable Me 2 – which remains the highest-grossing film of the year in the UK – regained some ground, moving up a spot from ninth to eighth place.

About Time and Riddick were the only new films to reach the top ten, with Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty debuting with £117,000 and Rooney Mara-starring indie Ain’t Them Bodies Saints making just £52,600.

‘One Direction: This Is Us’ storms UK box office

One Direction’s 3D documentary This Is Us has stormed to the top of the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

The movie, directed by Morgan Spurlock and produced by Simon Cowell, earned more than £3.4 million to send Matt Damon’s blockbuster Elysium into second place.

This Is Us‘s box office opening is by far the strongest for a recent 3D concert film. Previous offerings have failed to crack the £1 million mark, with Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never getting closest in 2011 with £820,592.

By comparison, 2012’s Katy Perry: Part of Me bowed to £449,491, Glee: The 3D Concert Movie earned £356,271 in 2011 and 2009’s Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Performance took just £117,060.

This Is Us is also the number one movie Stateside with a $17 million haul over the Labor Day weekend.Elsewhere in the UK, new releases Pain & Gain, The Way Way Back and You’re Next all made a dent in the top ten.

The biggest faller is young adult novel adaptation The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which lost 72% in ticket sales from last week to tumble down from number four to 12.
