Richard Curtis’ directorial swan song About Time has topped the UK box office charts after its first weekend on release.
The romantic comedy made a total of £1.7 million, narrowly out-stripping the week’s other new entry Riddick which brought in £1.4 million.
One Direction: This Is Us fell to third place with £1.1 million following its strong opening.
Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain fell to seventh place, while Despicable Me 2 – which remains the highest-grossing film of the year in the UK – regained some ground, moving up a spot from ninth to eighth place.
About Time and Riddick were the only new films to reach the top ten, with Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty debuting with £117,000 and Rooney Mara-starring indie Ain’t Them Bodies Saints making just £52,600.
