Horizon beats Zelda to number one in the gaming charts

Monday, March 6th, 2017

Last week was a huge week for the UK video game retail with the launch of Nintendo Switch, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and PS4 exclusive Horizon: Zero Dawn. Perhaps no massive surprise that Horizon topped the charts given the massive advantage in installed base that the PS4 has over Switch and Wii U, but still very impressive as Horizon: Zero Dawn became the biggest launch of the year thus far and the biggest new IP launch on PS4 to date (beating No Man’s Sky). It’s the biggest launch on PS4 since Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. The Switch edition of Breath of the Wild is the third biggest UK launch of a Zelda game (trailing Wind Waker on Gamecube and Twilight Princess on Wii).

Elsewhere in the charts other Switch titles also did well as 1-2-Switch came in fourth and Super Bomberman R managed seventh. Just Dance 2017 re-entered the chart in 24th on the back of the release of the Switch version, while Skylanders: Imaginators failed to chart as it proved the least popular launch title at retail.

Finally at number 19 (all formats) was the retail edition of The Walking Dead: A New Frontier from Telltale Games that launched this week.

All Formats (all prices):

1. Horizon: Zero Dawn / Sony (new)
2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild / Nintendo (new)
3. Grand Theft Auto V / Rockstar
4. 1-2-Switch / Nintendo (new)

For Honor claims second week as top game

Tuesday, February 28th, 2017

Despite offering something relatively unique in the multiplayer space, it seems that Ubisoft’s For Honor has hit a nerve with a large audience. It debuted in the top spot in the UK in its launch week, and it stayed that way last week.

The numbers are in, and despite a hefty drop in physical sales, a steep 72% decline week-on-week, For Honor still managed to hold on to the throne. That forced Halo Wars 2 to settle for a second place in its debut week.

Below you’ll find the top 10:

1. For Honor (Ubisoft)
2. Halo Wars 2 (Microsoft/THQ Nordic)
3. Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar)
4. FIFA 17 (EA)
5. Sniper Elite 4 (Sold Out)
6. Battlefield 1 (EA)
7. Rocket League (505 Games)
8. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (Activision)
9. Resident Evil VII (Capcom)
10. Forza Horizon 3 (Microsoft)

Grand Theft Auto V tops the gaming charts for a 12th time

Monday, February 13th, 2017

Once again it is Grand Theft Auto V that sits on top of the weekly UK retail charts. And it does so for the 12th time since its original release in September, 2013. Earning 12 top spots in the charts is not a record, but only 5 titles have managed to do so since the charts began. The record holder? Who Want’s To Be A Millionaire? from Eidos, which managed a whopping 18 weeks at number one. Wii Fit sits at number two with 16 weeks.

However, it should be noted that the number two game this week, the PS4 exclusive Nioh from Koei Tecmo and Sony (European publisher), did pull in the most revenue thanks to its higher average price of £44.45. Resident Evil 7 makes it two weeks in a row

Monday, February 6th, 2017

The Resident Evil series is enjoying a resurgence thanks to the release of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and it seems it is not just reviewers who are enjoying it as it spends it second week on top of the UK retail charts in spite of losing 68 percent of its first week sales. Hitman saw the retail release of its first season and came in at a respectable fourth spot on the all formats chart. Another new release, Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World didn’t have the same chart success as it came in at number 20, which given it only saw release on Nintendo 3DS could be considered decent. Final Fantasy XV climbed back into the top 10 thanks to continued price promotions.

All Formats (all prices):

1. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard / Capcom
2. Grand Theft Auto V / Rockstar
3. FIFA 17 / EA Sports

Resident Evil 7 takes top spot in this week’s UK gaming charts

Monday, January 30th, 2017

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was the best-selling game at UK retail last week, and 2017’s first new number one. It’s actually the third highest selling entry in the series to date (2009’s Resident Evil 5 is top in this regard), although with the rise of digital sales, it’s hard to say whether overall sales are up or down compared to past iterations.

Elsewhere, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue debuted in third, while Yakuza 0 charted in eighth. Outside of the GfK Chart-Track top ten that you can see below, Tales of Berseria also launched last week (14th), as did Digimon World: Next Order (24th).

1. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard / Capcom
2. Grand Theft Auto V / Take Two
3. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue / Square Enix

Call of Duty claims UK Christmas number one

Monday, December 19th, 2016

Given a relatively weak start, we thought that maybe, just maybe, we wouldn’t see a Call of Duty title on top of the UK retail charts over Christmas. But alas, it was not to be. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare has rallied over the last couple of weeks and in the end won this week’s charts comfortably ahead of FIFA 17. Another notable thing was that Grand Theft Auto V climbed back into the top 10. Since its release 170 weeks ago it has spent 130 weeks inside the top 10 on the UK retail charts. Simply incredible.

Further down the chart promotions had a lot of impact as price cuts on Dishonored 2 (from 17 to 8), Mafia III (from 26 to 10) helped them climb. Dead Rising 4 and The Last Guardian subsequently tumbled down the list after strong starts and found themselves just inside the top 20. Pokémon Sun/Moon continues to sell well, but given that they’re counted as two separate games they both land just outside the top 10 (all format 13th and 15th). It’s hard to tell exactly where it would have landed if they had been counted together, but likely ahead of Final Fantasy XV and possibly, but perhaps not likely ahead of GTAV as well.

All Format (all prices):

1. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare / Activision
2. FIFA 17 / EA Sports
3. Battlefield 1 / EA Games
4. Watch Dogs 2 / Ubisoft
5. Grand Theft Auto V / Rockstar
6. Final Fantasy XV / Square Enix
7. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition / Bethesda
8. Dishonored 2 / Bethesda
9. Steep / Ubisoft
10. Mafia III / 2K Games

Call of Duty back on top in the UK

Monday, December 12th, 2016

Activision’s Call of Duty has been the winner of the last two Christmas retail charts in the UK with Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. While, this year’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare has struggled relative to Black Ops 3 it seems it will still be a popular Christmas gift for UK gamers. This week it reclaimed the top spot on the UK retail charts and it would seem it will be competing with FIFA 17 for Christmas honours.

There were some big new releases this week as well with Dead Rising 4 capturing fifth spot and The Last Guardian taking seventh. Pokémon Sun/Moon and Skyrim Special Edition are still performing really well. Looking at the individual chart we can see that had the two Pokémon SKUs been bunched together it would have landed in fourth spot this week. Final Fantasy XV falls a couple of spots, but puts in a decent second week performance.

All Formats (all prices):

1. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare / Activision
2. FIFA 17 / EA Sports
3. Battlefield 1 / EA Games
4. Final Fantasy XV / Square Enix
5. Dead Rising 4 / Microsoft (new)
6. Watch Dogs 2 / Ubisoft
7. The Last Guardian / Sony (new)
8. Pokémon Sun / Nintendo
9. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition
10. Pokémon Moon / Nintendo
