Inbetweeners 2 scores biggest UK box office debut of 2014

The Inbetweeners 2 has scored the UK’s biggest opening weekend box office of 2014.

The comedy sequel earned more than £12.5 million across the country during its first weekend.

It also enjoyed the biggest ever opening day for comedy in the UK when it debuted last Wednesday (August 6).

Its predecessor took £45m at the UK box office when it launched in 2011, and went on to earn approximately £58 million in total.

The Inbetweeners 2 follows Will, Neil and Simon as they join Jay on his gap year in Australia.

Guardians of the Galaxy tops UK box-office

Guardians of the Galaxy has topped the UK box office on its debut weekend on release.

James Gunn’s blockbuster earned close to £6.4 million to end Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘ reign at the chart summit.

Guardians‘ four-day opening is one of the biggest ever debuts for a Marvel movie in the UK, beating the first instalments of Iron Man (£5.6 million), Thor (£5.46 million), Captain America (£3.3 million) and X-Men (£4.8 million).

Elsewhere, the chart sees new releases The Nut Job and Step Up 5: All In debut in the top 10 at numbers six and nine respectively.

Secret Cinema’s Back to the Future event is one of the bigger success stories of the week, charting at number seven after banking £538,159.

The East London immersive screening, which takes place in a recreation of the film’s Hill Valley, has now earned £720,479 in ticket sales and still has showings throughout August.

Planet of the Apes beats Hercules at UK box office…

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has held off competition from Hercules to top the UK box office for the second consecutive weekend.

The Matt Reeves-directed Apes sequel earned £3.7 million to secure the top spot ahead of Dwayne Johnson’s latest release and horror sequel The Purge: Anarchy.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 sits at number four after five weeks on release, while Transformers: Age of Extinction rounds out the top five.

The only chart climber is Boyhood, now on its third weekend on release, which moves up a place to number seven.

Elsewhere, the chart sees new entries from family adventure Earth to Echo, Bollywood movie Kick and The House of Magic.

Planet of the Apes beats Transformers at UK box office

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has topped the UK box office on its debut weekend on release.

The action sequel ended Transformers: Age of Extinction‘s run in first place, taking in £8.7m to secure top spot ahead of How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Dawn easily outperformed its predecessor, which debuted to £5.8 million in 2011.

This week’s box office also saw two live releases make it into the top five – a first since cinemas started broadcasting concert, stage or sporting events.

Monty Python Live (Mostly) earned a staggering £1.2 million from its theatrical transmission from London’s O2, while Andre Rieu’s 2014 Maastricht concert followed closely behind with £830,586.

Elsewhere, Pudsey the Dog: The Movie debuted at number seven with £446,450 in ticket sales.

Transformers: Age of Extinction tops UK box offfice

Transformers: Age of Extinction won the battle of the sequels at the UK box office over the weekend.

Michael Bay’s robot blockbuster earned more than £11.7 million to hold off competition from How to Train Your Dragon 2 and secure first place.

Transformers posted the biggest opening of 2014 in the UK, but had the benefit of a nine-day opening after debuting on a Saturday (July 5) and not being eligible for last week’s chart.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 has already been on release in Scotland and Ireland for two weeks, but expanding nationwide it racked up an impressive £7.7 million – a significant uptick from the £4.8 million earned by its predecessor when it opened in 2010.

Elsewhere in the week’s chart, musical drama Begin Again debuted at number five with £456,438 and Richard Linklater’s highly praised Boyhood secured seventh place with £312,747.

Mrs Brown’s Boys spends second weekend atop UK box office

Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie has topped the UK box office for the second weekend running.

Brendan O’Carroll’s big-screen spin on his hit BBC sitcom earned £2.1 million to secure first place ahead of The Fault in Our Stars. The film has now grossed more than £9.2 million from UK and Ireland cinemas after opening on June 27.

Transformers: Age of Extinction pulled in £4.7 million over the weekend after bowing on July 5, but isn’t eligible for this week’s chart as this is drawn from Friday to Sunday totals.

Michael Bay’s sequel is a certainty to take the number one slot next week thanks to its nine-day opening run.

Elsewhere in this week’s chart, Melissa McCarthy’s comedy Tammy is the highest new release, charting at number five with £471,429. The total falls short of matching the comedy star’s two most recent films from 2013, The Heat (£2.5 million) and Identity Thief (£1.3 million).

Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie stuns UK box office

Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie has stunned the UK box office on its debut weekend on release.

Brendan O’Carroll’s big-screen spinoff from his hit BBC sitcom earned £4.3 million to secure its place at the top of the UK cinema chart.

The film’s box office performance has outpaced recent TV-to-film adaptation Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, which opened to £2.2 million last summer.

However, Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie still falls some way short of matching the The Inbetweeners Movie, a big earner in 2011 with a £13 million first-weekend haul and £57 million in cumulative box office takings.

Elsewhere in this week’s chart, new releases Chef, How to Train Your Dragon 2 (not on full release in Scotland and Ireland) and jukebox musical Walking on Sunshine all made it into the top ten.

The Fault in Our Stars hits big at UK box office

The Fault in Our Stars has topped the box office on its opening weekend on release.

Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort’s romantic drama has already struck a chord with audiences Stateside, and has replicated its success with audiences across UK and Ireland.

The film, which has already earned more than $160 million (£94 million) from the worldwide box office, added £3.4 million to its running total after releasing in the UK on June 19.

The adaptation of John Green’s best-selling YA novel charted ahead of last week’s number one movie 22 Jump Street and Angelina Jolie-led Disney blockbuster Maleficent.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is in fourth place with £564,649 on its fifth weekend on release. The superhero sequel has now earned £25.7 million from UK cinemas.

Elsewhere, new films from Clint Eastwood and Kevin Costner failed to light up the chart. Eastwood’s musical Jersey Boys debuted at number six ahead of the McG-directed 3 Days to Kill at number seven.

Bollywood release Humshakals charted at number ten with £129,181.

22 Jump Street beats Maleficent at UK box office

22 Jump Street has topped the UK box office for the second consecutive weekend.

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill’s comedy sequel leads the top ten ahead of Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Tom Cruise action movie Edge of Tomorrow is close behind in fourth, meaning that the top four films are all unchanged from last week.

The chart saw three new releases make the top ten, with Karen Gillan’s Oculus the most successful. The horror movie debuted at number five ahead of period drama Belle (number six) and Devil’s Knot (number nine).

Rio 2, which has been on release for 11 weeks, climbs up a spot to round out the top ten.

22 Jump Street tops UK box office

22 Jump Street has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

The comedy, starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, debuted with an impressive £4.8 million opening to see off competition from Maleficent and X-Men: Days of Future Past and secure first place.

22 Jump Street‘s debut has trebled the opening of 21 Jump Street, which bowed to £1.56 million in 2012 and went on to gross over £10 million in the UK.

Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow and A Million Ways to Die in the West complete this week’s top five.

Elsewhere, the D-Day 70 Years On live cinema event is a new entry at number seven ahead of Nicole Kidman’s critically-panned Grace of Monaco (number nine).
