‘The Hangover II’ opens to £10m at UK box office

The Hangover Part II has topped the UK box office with a £10 million opening.

The comedy sequel, which sees Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms’s characters head to Bangkok, welcomed impressive ticket sales thanks to a Thursday release and screenings on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Hangover Part II‘s £10 million total is the second highest debut of 2011, behind Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and easily outpaces the £3.1 million opening for The Hangover in 2009.

Last week’s number one movie On Stranger Tides falls to second spot, Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 is a new entry at three, Thor slips to number four and Fast & Furious 5 rounds out the top five.

Elsewhere, the extended Bank Holiday break proved fruitful for 3D family animation Rio, which climbs a place to number six.

Muppet trailer spoofs ‘The Hangover II’

The Muppets has spoofed The Hangover Part II with its latest teaser trailer.

Following on from the recent ‘Green With Envy’ video, Disney has released a new promo dubbed ‘The Fuzzy Pack’. The clip, which features Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear, recreates the first trailer for the Hangover sequel.

The Muppets centres on Gary (Segel) and Amy (Mary) as they attempt to raise $10 million in order to save the Muppet Theatre from the clutches of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper).

The movie opens in the US on November 23 and February 17, 2012 in the UK. The Hangover Part II is in cinemas now.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

The 3D adventure sequel, starring Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz, debuts with an impressive £11.6 million to end Thor and Fast & Furious 5‘s recent domination of the top ten.

Boosted by a Wednesday release, On Stranger Tides posted the biggest box office opening of 2011 and is Disney’s fourth-largest opening ever in the UK. Its £11 million gross is also more than the rest of the top ten combined.

Worldwide, the Pirates sequel has pulled in $256 million (£159 million), passing the record set by Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in 2009.

Elsewhere, the chart sees new releases Blitz and Win Win enter at numbers nine and ten respectively.

Latest ‘Green Lantern’ trailer launches

Warner Bros. have released a new trailer for the upcoming superhero epic Green Lantern.

Unlike the previously released trailers which have mainly focused on the character of Hal Jordan, played by Ryan Reynolds, the new trailer is aimed at those who are unfamiliar with the character.

Narrated by Geoffrey Rush, who stars as the Green Lantern Tomar-Re, the trailer explains the origin of the Green Lantern Corps and their leaders, the Guardians of Oa.

The film also stars Blake Lively, Mark Strong, Peter Sarsgaard, Angela Bassett, Tim Robbins, and Michael Clarke Duncan.

Stephen King: ‘Lindsay Lohan could play Carrie’

Stephen King has claimed that he is open to having Lindsay Lohan play the titular role in a planned Carrie remake.

It was revealed today that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, writer of Spider Man: Turn Off The Dark, is to bring a new adaptation of King’s classic horror novel to the big screen.

When asked for his thoughts on the project, the 63-year-old author expressed doubt that Brian De Palma’s 1976 flick could be outdone, but appeared excited by the prospect of seeing Lohan star.

He told Entertainment Weekly: “I’ve heard rumblings about a Carrie remake…who knows if it will happen?

‘Thor’ still on top at UK box office

Marvel’s Thor has spent its third consecutive weekend at the top of the UK box office.

The 3D fantasy epic, starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, again charts ahead of Fast & Furious 5, while Joe Cornish’s directorial debut Attack the Block pulls in an impressive £1.1 million in third place.

Horror movie Insidious and Hanna complete the top five.

Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon’s romance Water for Elephants dips two spots to number six, while Rio holds its place at number seven.

Elsewhere, romantic comedy Something Borrowed is at number eight, with Priest and Arthur occupying ninth and tenth place respectively.

Hugh Bonneville for ‘20,000 Leagues’ sequel

Hugh Bonneville has signed up to the sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

The Downton Abbey star will play Captain Nemo in the second film, who teams up with President Ulysses Grant to combat a menace at sea, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It has been described as a steampunk project, which means it could feature old versions of contemporary technology.

Horror director Pearry Teo is helming the 3D venture. He is best known for The Gene Generation and Necromentia.

‘Thor’ continues UK box office reign

Marvel’s latest superhero movie Thor has topped the UK box office for the second consecutive weekend.

Despite a host of new cinema releases, the top three remains unchanged from last week. Both Thor and Fast & Furious 5 experience sharp falls in ticket sales, while horror Insidious maintains strong numbers as it drops just over £100,000 on its second weekend out in UK theatres.

Robert Pattinson’s Water for Elephants is the highest new entry, landing at number four with £1.2 million. Saoirse Ronan and Joe Wright’s assassin thriller Hanna completes the top five.

Elsewhere, Kate Hudson’s latest romantic comedy Something Borrowed bows at number six and Priest charts at eight.

‘Thor’ hammers home UK box office victory

Marvel’s latest superhero movie Thor has topped the UK box office on its debut weekend on release.

The blockbuster, starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, outmuscles Fast & Furious 5 to take in £5.4 million and secure first place.

Kenneth Branagh’s movie was aided by 3 days of previews and the extended Bank Holiday thanks to the royal wedding.

The only other new release to chart in the top ten, Insidious from Saw creators James Wan and Leigh Wannell, bows at number three with £1.4 million.

Rio and Arthur complete the top five, while fantasies Beastly and Red Riding Hood are the biggest fallers as they slip three spots apiece to occupy positions eight and ten.

‘Fast & Furious 5’ scores big at UK box office

Fast & Furious 5 has debuted at the top of the UK box office.

The latest movie in the long-running action franchise, which sees Dwayne Johnson join returning cast members Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, pulls in an impressive £5.3 million to cruise past 3D animation Rio and secure first place.

Boosted by a Thursday opening and Good Friday showings, Fast & Furious 5 registers the third highest box office opening of 2011 behind Gulliver’s Travels (£7 million) and Paul (£5.5 million).

Russell Brand’s remake of Arthur, last week’s number one Scream 4 and the Vanessa Hudgens-led Beastly complete the top five.

Elsewhere, new release TT3D: Closer to the Edge, a racing documentary about the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, bows at number nine.
