Dredd has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

Karl Urban’s action movie, based on the cult 2000AD comic book character, pulls in £1 million to become the first 18-rated film to emerge as UK box office champ since Saw 3D in 2010.

Dredd sees off competition from Tom Hardy’s Lawless and the Keira Knightley-led Anna Karenina adaptation to secure first place.

Last week’s number one movie Total Recall saw a sharp 73% decline in ticket sales as it drops to number four. Brave, Pixar’s animated tale of a princess in the Scottish Highlands, is at number five in its sixth weekend on release.

Elsewhere, comedy movie The Watch experiences a huge 85% dip in box office takings to tumble down seven places from last week’s number two slot.

Total Recall has topped the UK box office on its first weekend of release.

The Colin Farrell-starring sci-fi remake pulled in £2,493,230 from 464 locations, narrowly beating Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn’s alien-busting comedy The Watch, which made £2,235,933 from 419 locations.

Pixar’s Brave took the number three spot with £1,604,163, following its two-week reign at the top of the chart.

Seth MacFarlane’s Ted, which upon its release enjoyed the biggest first weekend for a comedy in 2012, came in at number four with £990,842.

The other new release to crack the top ten was Sam Raimi-produced horror The Possession, which made £979,192 from 374 locations.

Outside of the top ten, newly released comedies A Few Best Men and Cockneys vs Zombies made £263,770 and £8,198 (plus £3,276 in previews) respectively.

Peter Strickland’s acclaimed horror Berberian Sound Studio made £43,024 (plus £2,716 in previews) from its 23 locations.

The Avengers DVD and Blu-ray release will not feature commentary from Joss Whedon in the UK.

Marvel Studios parent company Disney told Empire that the director recorded his audio track too late to make the film’s home media release in the territory.

Various editions of the movie have been confirmed for home formats – single disc DVD or Blu-ray, 3D and 2D Blu-ray combo, and box sets in both formats that bundle the film in with the previous Marvel offerings.

The box sets include The Avengers, Iron Man and its sequel, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger and The Incredible Hulk.

All versions will include an array of bonus material, including deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and the 90-minute documentary Building a Dream: Assembling the Avengers.

Marvel Studios recently released an alternative opening sequence to the film that will feature among the DVD and Blu-ray extras.

The Avengers is released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on September 17.

Pixar’s Brave has topped the UK box office for the second consecutive weekend.

The 3D film, which features the voices of Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson and Billy Connolly, takes in £2.3 million to hold off competition from comedy Ted and The Bourne Legacy.

The Dark Knight Rises charts at number four as it crosses the £52 million mark in the UK. Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy closer is now the highest-grossing film in Britain for 2012, surpassing The Avengers‘s £51.8 million haul.

Keith Lemon The Film rounds out the top five with a £1.1 million box office total.

Elsewhere, the chart sees new entries in the form of Farrelly brothers comedy The Three Stooges and documentary The Imposter. The latter pulls in an impressive £252,170 from its 49 locations.

Pixar’s latest animated movie Brave has topped the UK box office.

The 3D film, which centres on a flame-haired princess (Kelly Macdonald) growing up in Scotland, pulls in £5.2 million to hold off competition from The Bourne Legacy and secure the top spot.

Brave expanded from Irish and Scottish theatres into England and Wales over the weekend, prompting a huge 818% leap in ticket sales.

Seth MacFarlane’s comedy Ted is in third place ahead of new release The Expendables 2. Sylvester Stallone’s action sequel falls short of its predecessor, which netted £3.94 million when it opened in 2010.

Last week’s runner-up The Dark Knight Rises falls three places to number five.

Elsewhere, Bollywood film Ek Tha Tiger charts at number six and Rufus Hound’s comedy The Wedding Video lands at ten.

Director Tony Scott has died after jumping off a bridge in Los Angeles.

The Top Gun helmer, and the brother of Sir Ridley Scott, threw himself off the Vincent Thomas Bridge at around 12.30pm on Sunday in an apparent suicide, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

The US Coast Guard said that a suicide note was found inside the 68-year-old’s car, parked on one of the eastbound lanes of the bridge, reports the Daily Breeze.

The Vincent Thomas Bridge spans San Pedro and Terminal Island and rises 185 feet at its highest point above the water.

Authorities used sonar equipment to find Tony’s body in the murky waters, after eyewitnesses reported a man jumping off the bridge. His body was recovered by a dive team at roughly 4.30pm.

Ted has spent its second weekend at the top of the UK box office.

Seth MacFarlane’s comedy, which stars Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, pulls in more than £3 million to hold off Batman sequel The Dark Knight Rises and secure the top spot.

Dance sequel Step Up 4: Miami Heat is a new entry at number three, taking in £680,052 from its 396 locations.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days lands at number four, while Brave climbs a place to number five based on screenings in Ireland and Scotland.

Elsewhere, British thriller Offender debuts at number ten with £74,154 from its 68 locations.

Ted has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s directorial debut earns £9.3 million from its 509 locations to end The Dark Knight Rises‘s two-week run at the chart summit.

Ted‘s opening haul is the biggest first-weekend for a comedy movie in 2012. Last year, The Hangover Part II debuted to £10.41 million, while The Inbetweeners Movie scored the biggest ever comedy bow with £13.22 million.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, the third instalment in the family franchise, takes the number three slot ahead of Ice Age 4 and The Lorax.

Pixar’s Brave makes its UK box office debut at number six after opening early in Scottish, Irish and Northern Irish cinemas. It is expected to better its £820,084 gross when it expands into English and Welsh locations on August 13.

Elsewhere, Mirror Mirror re-enters the top ten, rising up to number nine after its location count is boosted to 187 for the school holidays.

The Dark Knight Rises has topped the UK box office for the second consecutive weekend.

Christopher Nolan’s Batman finale pulls in more than £7 million to hold off competition from animated family movies The Lorax and Ice Age 4 and secure the number one spot.

The Dark Knight Rises is now the fasting-grossing film of 2012 in the UK, having crossed the £30 million mark in 10 days. Fellow superhero blockbuster Avengers Assemble took 12 days to reach the same total.

The Amazing Spider-Man and Channing Tatum’s stripper movie Magic Mike round out the top five.

New releases Searching for Sugar Man and Bollywood film Carry on Jatta enter the chart at numbers seven and nine respectively.

Elsewhere, Aardman’s The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists re-enters the top ten, vaulting up from number 24 to eight after its location count was upped to 162.

The Dark Knight Rises has debuted at the top of the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

Christopher Nolan’s final Batman instalment pulls in £14.6 million to easily secure the number one spot ahead of Ice Age 4: Continental Drift and The Amazing Spider-Man.

The Dark Knight Rises‘s three-day total, from Friday through Sunday, is the highest of the year so far. It narrowly misses out on the biggest opening weekend of 2012 to The Avengers, whose £15.78 million total was aided by £2.55 million in previews.

The Batman trilogy closer’s opening haul outpaces the £4.43 million earned by The Dark Knight in 2008 and the £4.43 million taken home by 2005’s Batman Begins.

Elsewhere, the UK top ten sees Magic Mike and The Five-Year Engagement at numbers four and five, while Bollywood release Cocktail is at six.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World experiences the sharpest fall as it loses 83% in ticket sales on its second weekend in cinemas.
