Dance Monkey claims Number 1 on the UK’s Official Singles Chart

October 4th, 2019

Tones and I’s Dance Monkey takes this week’s top spot on the Official UK Singles Chart, marking the end of a nine-week climb up the Top 100.

The Australian singer-songwriter’s breakthrough track first entered the singles chart at Number 82 in August and this week’s leaps six places to Number 1 with over 50,000 chart sales, including 5.1 million streams.

On learning the news, Tones and I told OfficialCharts.com: “Thank you so much UK for your support on this track, I can’t wait to come over soon and celebrate with you all.”

In her native Australia, Tones and I – real name Toni Watson – is enjoying a ninth consecutive week at Number 1. Last week Dance Monkey broke the country’s record for most weeks at the summit by an Australian female solo artist, sweeping aside a 32-year-old record set by Kylie Minogue’s Locomotion.

In the UK, Dance Monkey is the first Number 1 by an Australian artist in five years, since Iggy Azalea’s Problem with Ariana Grande.

Dance Monkey holds off competition from Regard’s Ride It, which jumps three places to a new peak at Number 2. The song has outperformed the 2008 original by Jay Sean, which topped out at Number 11 in 2008.

Lewis Capaldi’s Bruises – the latest spinoff from his chart-topping debut album – zooms 71 places to Number 11, boosted by the release of a new remixes EP including a live orchestral version.

D-Block Europe scores this week’s highest new entry with Playing For Keeps ft. Dave going straight in at 21, earning the South London group their fifth Top 40 single.

Further down, Buss Down by rising star Aitch rebounds ten places to 25 following the release of the track’s music video, and DJ/producers Riton & Oliver Heldens make their Top 40 debut together with Turn Me On, vaulting 21 spots to Number 37. The climb means Riton claims his second and Oliver his third UK Top 40 hit.

Ed Sheeran holds on to his chart crown for another week as his latest single Take Me Back To London notches up a fifth week at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart.

The track, which features Stormzy and has been remixed by Sir Spyro with added guests Jaykae and Aitch, easily claims another week at the summit with 53,000 chart sales, finishing 14,000 ahead of his closest competitor.

Ed’s fellow collaborator Aitch takes second place this week with his breakthrough track Taste (Make It Shake), climbing one place to Number 2 to match its previous peak held two weeks ago.

The Legend of Zelda topples Borderlands 3 on the gaming charts

September 23rd, 2019

Sony and Microsoft have sold more than 135 million PlayStation 4 and Xbox One units if we combine the two, so you’d think Nintendo Switch exclusives would have a hard time reaching the top spot of the boxed sales charts in the United Kingdom. Now we have another example of that not being the case.

It turns out that the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening pushed Borderlands 3 down to second place on the sales charts. Grezzo’s latest title isn’t even the only Switch exclusive on the podium, as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe raced its way to third last week. We’re guessing the launch of the Nintendo Switch Lite helped with the latter.

Congratulations on your great week, Nintendo. Just don’t expect to stay on top in next week’s charts, as FIFA 20 launches this Friday. Still, you are free to enjoy the sight of this top ten from last week’s sales:

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
  2. Borderlands 3
  3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  4. Gears 5
  5. eFootball PES 2020
  6. The Division 2
  7. Grand Theft Auto V
  8. Spyro Reignited Trilogy
  9. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
  10. NBA 2K20

September 20th, 2019

Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey’s new collaboration Don’t Call Me Angel has been pipped to the post on this week’s Official Singles Chart, debuting at Number 2 behind Ed Sheeran’s Take Me Back to London.

Don’t Call Me Angel, which features in the upcoming Charlie’s Angels film, led the way in the midweek charts but ultimately settles for second place as Ed’s Take Me Back to London ft. Stormzy claims a fourth week at Number 1. The song notched up 59,000 chart sales this week, including 8.2 million streams.

Don’t Call Me Angel earns Ariana her 15th UK Top 10 hit, Miley her fifth and Lana her fourth and first in six years.

Meanwhile, Kosovo-born DJ Regard edges closer to the Top 10 with his breakout club hit Ride It, climbing for a fifth consecutive week to Number 11, up four slots.

London music collective D-Block Europe score their fourth Top 40 single with Nookie ft. Lil Baby at 16, marking their strongest debut on the Official Chart yet. Post Malone’s Take What You Want ft. Ozzy Osbourne and Travis Scott is also new at 22, earning Post his 13th Top 40 hit and veteran rocker Ozzy his eighth as a soloist and first in almost 15 years, since his chart-topping duet Changes with daughter Kelly.

Further down, Lil Nas X’s Panini rebounds 30 places and hits a new peak at 23 following the release of its futuristic music video, and this year’s newly crowned Mercury Prize winner Dave is new at 24 with Professor X, a track from Netflix series Top Boy.

Borderlands 3 is biggest UK boxed launch of the year

September 16th, 2019

We knew that people were hyped for the arrival of Borderlands 3, bringing the mainline series back after a very long wait, and as revealed by GamesIndustry.biz, it turns out this has translated to good sales figures, since the sequel is the biggest boxed launch of the year in the UK, sitting at number one in the charts this week.

Days Gone was the previous biggest launch, and despite Borderlands 3’s record it actually sold half the number of boxed copies as Borderlands 2. That said, its predecessor launched in 2012, which was a very different time for games, and many prefer digital over physical these days.

Gears 5 sits in second place, selling about 25% of what Gears 4 managed in 2016, and this is even less surprising considering its popularity on the digital Game Pass service. That leaves eFootball PES 2020 at number three, and this is actually up on the last entry, seeing an 18.5% bump in week one sales.

Spiders’ RPG Greedfall is also in the top 10 at five, with Daemon X Machine debuting at 19 and NHL 20 at number 36. For the full top 10, however, check down below.

Can Borderlands 3 stay there?

1. Borderlands 3 / 2K Games
2. Gears 5 / Microsoft
3. eFootball PES 2020 / Konami
4. NBA 2K20 / 2K Games
5. Greedfall / Focus Home Interactive
6. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe / Nintendo
7. Spyro Reignited Trilogy / Activision Blizzard
8. Grand Theft Auto V / Rockstar
9. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled / Activision Blizzard
10. Super Mario Maker 2 / Nintendo
