Harry Styles defeats Ed Sheeran to score debut solo Number 1

April 14th, 2017

13 is unlucky for some, including Ed Sheeran whose thirteen-week stint at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart has come to an end.

Harry Styles scores his first Number 1 as a solo artist with debut single Sign Of The Times. Taken from his fortchoming self-titled debut album, due for release May 12, Sign Of The Times pipped Ed’s Shape Of You to the top spot by just over 3,000 copies, the track has been downloaded 39,000 times and accumulated 3.5 million streams in the seven days since its release.

It’s not all bad though for Ed – Shape of You (2) and Galway Girl (3) are still both in the Top 5, while Shape of You was the most streamed track of the week with 6.8 million plays.

Elsewhere, there are small gains for Martin Jensen’s Solo Dance and Zedd & Alessia Cara’s Stay which both advance one place to new peak positions of 7 and 8 respectively.

New entries and high climbers

Lorde’s Green Light advances seven places this week to crack the Top 20 for the first time (20). Jason Derulo, Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign’s Swalla leaps 10 spots to 24, while Future’s Mask Off climbs seven rungs to Number 26.

Finally, two tracks enter the Top 40 for the very first time; Martin Solveig and Ina Wroldsen’s Places rockets 15 places to Number 27, and Disciples score their first Top 40 entry since July 2015 with On My Mind, a 47 place riser to Number 34.

The re-release of Lego City Undercover managed to score 8th position on the all formats chart, but was only ranked second in the battle of lego games with Lego Worlds in third.

Ed Sheeran, Jamiroquai and Goldfrapp dominate this week’s Official Charts

April 8th, 2017

Ed Sheeran extends his reign over the Official Albums Chart for a fifth week as his latest collection ÷ logs a fifth stint at Number 1.

The record, which shifted another 108,000 equivalent units this week across physical, download and streaming equivalent sales, fends off competition from Rag’n’Bone Man’s Human (2) and Jamiroquai, who lands this week’s highest new entry at 4 with his eighth studio album Automaton.

÷ is currently the UK’s Official biggest album of 2017 so far, with 1.5 million equivalent units sold across all formats.

Ed also keeps his place at the summit of the Official Singles Chart with Shape Of You, scoring its 13th consecutive week at the summit, while his track Galway Girl holds in the runner-up slot for a fifth week.

Elsewhere in this week’s Top 10, Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson’s Symphony climbs a place to a new peak at Number 3, and two songs enter the top tier for the first time: Zedd & Alessia Cara’s Stay at 9, up two spots, and the debut single from Julia Michaels, Issues, shifts three places to 10.

Little Mix’s No More Sad Songs ft. Machine Gun Kelly vaults 34 places to Number 17 – this week’s biggest climber in the Top 40 and now officially the group’s 16th Top 20 single.

Further down, Kendrick Lamar claims this week’s highest new entry with Humble at 21, Calvin Harris’s Heatstroke ft. Young Thug, Pharrell and Ariana Grande is new at 25, and Starley’s Call On Me re-enters at 32, up 12 places.

Mass Effect: Andromeda stays number one

April 3rd, 2017

Bioware’s Mass Effect: Andromeda managed to secure its second straight week at number one in the UK retail charts, an accomplishment only Mass Effect 2 achieved previously in the series. With no real major new releases, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix was the best new entry managing a respectable fourth in the all formats chart. In fact, this was the 11th (and we’re still waiting for Kingdom Hearts III) retail release for the franchise in the UK. The original Kingdom Hearts on PS2 still holds the best opening week in franchise history.

It should be noted that as evident by the positions in the all formats and individual formats chart with Lego Worlds achieving third spot in spite of just being 8th and 9th in the individual chart, things were very tightly contested this week. Single format blockbusters Horizon and Breath of the Wild each fall two places, but are showing strong legs and maintain their status as this year’s most buys on their respectable platforms which should make for continued strong sales (particularly for Zelda as more and more people buy Switch).

Further down the charts, Destiny: The Collection re-entered the charts at number 24, presumably on the back of the Destiny 2 reveal.

All Formats (all prices):
1. Mass Effect: Andromeda / EA Games
2. Ghost Recon: Wildlands / Ubisoft
3. Lego Worlds / Warner Bros.
4. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix / Square Enix (new)
5. Grand Theft Auto V / Rockstar
6. Horizon: Zero Dawn / Sony
7. FIFA 17 / EA Sports
8. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild / Nintendo
9. Rocket League / 505 Games
10. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare / Activision

Individual Formats (units):
1. Mass Effect: Andromeda / PS4
2. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix / PS4 (new)
3. Mass Effect: Andromeda / Xbox One
4. Horizon: Zero Dawn / PS4
5. Ghost Recon: Wildlands / PS4
6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild / Switch
7. Ghost Recon: Wildlands / Xbox One
8. Lego Worlds / PS4
9. Lego Worlds / Xbox One
10. Grand Theft Auto V / PS4

Ed Sheeran claims a fourth week at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart

March 31st, 2017

Despite huge first-week sales, Take That couldn’t topple Ed Sheeran’s ÷ from the Number 1 spot. The trio score this week’s highest new entry on the Official Albums Chart at 2, notching up 113,200 across physical, download and streaming equivalent sales.

It means Ed claims the Official Chart double for a fourth week, as Shape Of You logs a mammoth 12th week at the summit.

Albums

James Blunt scores his fifth Official Albums Chart Top 10 with The Afterlove, new at 6, while Scottish alt-rockers The Jesus and Mary Chain return to the Top 40 for the first time in over two decades with Damage And Joy at 16, and Southampton punk band Creeper are a new entry at 18 with Eternity In Your Arms.

Take That’s 2005 retrospective of nineties hits – Never Forget: The Ultimate Collection – rockets 67 places to Number 25 following the band’s appearance on ITV’s Saturday Night Takeaway last week; Steel Panther score their third Top 40 album with Lower The Bar, new at 26; and Michael Bublé’s Nobody But Me also zooms up the chart, climbing 41 slots to land at 27.

Singer-songwriter Steve Hackett lands a ninth Top 40 album with The Night Siren, new at 28, Phil Collins’ hits retrospective The Singles bounds 39 places to 35, while Trey Songz is new at 40 with Tremaine – The Album.

Singles

Ed’s grip on the Top 3 has loosened, with Galway Girl at 2 and Drake’s Passionfruit climbing a place to Number 3. Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson’s Symphony lifts two places to 4, and Ed’s Castle On The Hill completes the Top 5.

Meanwhile, Kygo and Selena Gomez’s It Ain’t Me rebounds 12 spots to 7, Issues by Julia Michaels edges closer to the Top 10 at 13, up 15 places, and Bruno Mars’ That’s What I Like moves ten rungs to 16.

Zayn scores this week’s highest new entry with Still Got Time ft. Partynextdoor, entering at 24, Lorde’s Green Light shifts 14 places to 26, and Rag’n’Bone Man’s Skin re-enters the Top 40 at 30 following the unveiling of its accompanying music video this week.

Mass Effect: Andromeda takes number one

March 27th, 2017

Even if the reviewers were hard on Mass Effect: Andromeda it should come as no surprise that it dislodged Ghost Recon: Wildlands from number on the UK retail charts this week. However, it didn’t manage to beat the first week performances of Mass Effect 2 and 3, which is somewhat surprising particularly given that Mass Effect 2 only launched on PC and Xbox 360 day one. Of course, in those days (2010) digital sales were minimal.

Mass Effect: Andromeda becomes the third biggest launch at UK retail in 2017 behind Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Horizon: Zero Dawn. And the sales were split as follows PS4: 55%, Xbox One 41%, PC 4%.

All Formats (all prices):

1. Mass Effect: Andromeda / EA Games (new)
2. Ghost Recon: Wildlands / Ubisoft
3. Lego Worlds / Warner Bros.
4. Horizon: Zero Dawn / Sony
5. Grand Theft Auto V / Rockstar
6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild / Nintendo
7. FIFA 17 / EA Sports
8. Rocket League / 505 Games
9. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare / Activision
10. Forza Horizon 3 / Microsoft
