Justin Bieber gets his very first UK No.1 single

Justin Bieber broke a chart record in scoring his first-ever UK number one with comeback single ‘What Do You Mean?’.

The track has become Bieber’s fastest-selling single in the UK, in addition to breaking the record for highest first-week streams for a single ever with 3.2 million.

Bieber tops the streaming record set by One Direction last month, with the count total encompassing Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer and other music services.

Last week’s number one – Rachel Platten’s ‘Fight Song’ – fell to second position this week, while ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ by The Weeknd rose to three.

Rounding out the top five are Calvin Harris & Disciples’ ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ and Jess Glynne’s ‘Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself’.

Demi Lovato achieved her fourth Top 10 single with ‘Cool for the Summer’, which jumped all the way from 112 to 7.

A physical release for 5 Seconds of Summer’s ‘She’s Kinda Hot’ propelled the track into the top 20, finishing at 14.

Meanwhile, ‘Hair’ by Little Mix entered the chart at 35 and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s latest ‘Downtown’ debuted at 37.

The Specials trombonist Rico Rodriguez dies, aged 80

The Specials trombonist Rico Rodriguez has died, aged 80.

The legendary ska group confirmed their bandmate’s passing in a message to their Twitter followers today (September 4).

“Our dear friend Rico passed away today. We offer our deepest condolences to his family. His legacy will go on forever and a day. RIP dear Rico,” they wrote.

Rico – also known as Reco and El Reco – was born Cuba but raised in Kingston, Jamaica. He would break into the mainstream music scene in the UK as part of various reggae bands in the early ’60s, before joining The Specials in 1979.

Rodriguez was a mainstay of the ska supergroup throughout the early 1980s, playing on their Too Much Too Young EP as well as the album More Specials.

He joined Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra in the 1990s, and was given an MBE at Buckingham Palace back in 2007.

Straight Outta Compton tops UK box-office

Straight Outta Compton has shot straight to the top of the UK box office following a quiet weekend.

The NWA biopic debuted with £2.4m, keeping Pixar’s Inside Out at number two for the third week running with £1.2m.

Hitman: Agent 47 landed at number three in its opening weekend with £961,411, while Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation took £890,857 to stay at number four.

Despite battling with terrible reviews, Pixels moves up one place to number five with £664,728 and Guy Ritchie’s Man From U.N.C.L.E. is at six with £658,399.

Elsewhere, horror sequel Sinister 2 takes £569,830 to land at number seven and John Green’s Paper Towns adaptation drops from the top spot to number eight for its second week, taking £452,953.

Minions rises one place to number nine, managing £353,262, and rounding off the top ten is 45 Years which debuted with £331,196.

Gears of War tops the all-formats gaming chart

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition has topped the all-format gaming chart ahead of Until Dawn and Disney Infinity 3.0.

There are a total of five new releases in the top ten, beginning with Gears of War at number one.

Sony exclusive Until Dawn follows in second, while Disney Infinity 3.0 and Madden NFL 16 chart at three and four.

Last week’s number one LEGO Jurassic World drops to five, above GTA 5 and Dishonored Definitive Edition, which is another brand new entry at seven.

Minecraft: PlayStation Edition, Batman: Arkham Knight and Minecraft: Xbox Edition also appear in the top ten.
