‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ crushes UK box office competition

Transformers: Dark of the Moon has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

Director Michael Bay’s 3D robot blockbuster, starring Shia LaBeouf and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, pulls in £10.7 million in ticket sales after opening in Brit cinemas last Wednesday.

Dark of the Moon‘s opening surpasses the debut for Transformers in 2007 (£8.7 million) and its 2009 sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (£8.4 million).

Last week’s chart leader Bridesmaids slips to number two, but still maintains a healthy second-week gross of £2 million. Kung Fu Panda 2, Bad Teacher and new release Larry Crowne – starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts – complete the top five.

Elsewhere, controversial Bollywood movie Delhi Belly opens at number nine with £155,000.

Jason Derülo beats Beyoncé to singles No.1

Jason Derülo has held on to the UK singles chart top spot for a second week with ‘Don’t Wanna Go Home’.

The 21-year-old defeated tough competition in the shape of Glastonbury favourites Example and Beyoncé to extend his reign at number one.

Example’s ‘Changed The Way You Kissed Me’ remains in the runner-up spot, while album chart champion Beyoncé snags the highest new entry of the week with ‘Best Thing I Never Had’ at three.

Elsewhere, Katy Perry takes ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’ into the Top 10 for the first time after climbing two places to nine, while Coldplay round out the top-sellers with ‘Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall’. The track slipped out of the rankings last week, but jumped an incredible 32 entries after a magnificent show at Glastonbury.
