Breaking news! Who could have anticipated this? Oh, just about everyone in the entire world… That’s right, GfK Chart-Track has just dropped the bombshell that Red Dead Redemption 2 was the best-selling retail game in the UK last week!

This means that Rockstar’s western epic bucks the general trend of sequels selling fewer physical copies than their predecessors. The Adventures of Arthur Morgan sold more than twice as many physical copies as Red Dead Redemption managed eight years ago.

However, it is not the fastest selling game in the UK this year. That honour belongs to FIFA 19. That said, it is the third fastest selling non-FIFA game in this console generation, only beaten by Call of Duty: Black Ops III and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, which had the advantage of also being released on PC.

Again, these are just physical copies. The sales numbers are going to be even more impressive when the digital numbers are included. Even so, one of the most anticipated games ever has crushed everything in its path on the retail front, as you can see below:

It should hardly come as a surprise that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 held on to number one for a second week with the top three remaining unchanged. It was a rough week for new releases as Lego DC Super-Villains only managed to reach sixth, with SoulCalibur VI landing at 8. With the release of Dark Souls Remastered on Switch, the game bounced back to 12 in the all formats chart, with Ubisoft’s toys-to-life title Starlink: Battle for Atlas only getting to number 14. Luigi’s Mansion on Nintendo 3DS got 23rd.

Next week, we fully expect Red Dead Redemption 2 will lay claim to the number one position.

It’s no surprise to hear that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is at the top of the UK boxed charts, but it’s not actually that strong a performance from the game when stacked up against the series history, as this is the weakest start to a game’s sales since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare all the way back in 2007 (as reported by GamesIndustry.biz).

What’s more is that these sales are almost 50% down on last year’s WWII, and 59% down compared to Black Ops III, although it’s worth noting that this could be due to a shift in preference for digital. After all, Black Ops 4 has set several records for Activision in this area, becoming the biggest digital day one launch ever for them.

So it’s not all doom and gloom for Call of Duty, as it’s impressed digitally, positioned itself as the second biggest boxed launch of the year behind FIFA, and is still number one. We also know that 58% of the sales were on PS4, with 41% on Xbox One and the rest on PC.

WWE 2K19 is another new release, coming in at number four in the charts despite physical sales also being down 37.5% compared to last year, with FIFA 19 and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey holding firm at numbers two and three respectively.

It’s hardly surprising that FIFA 19 holds on to the top spot in the UK retail charts this week, even with formidable opposition in the shape of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Forza Horizon 4. It should be noted that while Odyssey came in second in the all formats chart, Forza Horizon 4 did sell more if the SKUs are separated (individual formats). Perhaps an indication that Odyssey sales came in a little soft, there was no comparison with previous Assassin’s Creed launches provided by GfK Chart-Track. Elsewhere, new releases Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise and Astro Boy Rescue Mission came in 21st and 22nd respectively.

FIFA 19 is the best-selling game in the UK at retail over the last week, with the series knocking old Spidey off his spot at the top of the charts. According to early stats shared over at GI.biz, this year’s game is already the biggest video game launch of the year, despite the fact that week one retail sales are actually down 25% year-on-year. For the time being the UK charts don’t take digital sales into account, so it could well be that digital downloads account for nearly all of the aforementioned 25% drop (indeed, sales may even surpass those of last year).

It’s been a good week for the accountants at Sony, with Spider-Man becoming the second best-selling game of the year so far, overtaking Far Cry 5 – impressive when you think that Insomniac’s web-slinging adventure is a platform exclusive. Sony’s console also accounts for 64% sales of FIFA 19, and 54% of sales of the top ten’s other debut title, Valkyria Chronicles 4. Check out the GfK Chart-Track top ten below:

Insomniac is continuing to enjoy success with Spider-Man, with their platform exclusive web-slinging adventure making it three weeks at the top of the UK retail charts. Aristocratic grave robber Lara Croft has to make peace with yet a second week in second place, while Crash Bandicoot has spun up the charts a solitary place to complete the top three (replacing NBA 2K19 which drops to fourth). Otherwise, there’s not a ton of interesting movement to tell you about, so gaze at the GfK Chart-Track top ten below and then let’s all move on.

Two of the biggest releases of September have come out within a week of each other – Spider-Man and Shadow of the Tomb Raider – and as reported by GamesIndustry.biz, Spider-Man has actually held off competition from Lara Croft to stay at number one in the UK charts for a second week, with Shadow of the Tomb Raider making do with number two instead.

It’s not all doom and gloom for Shadow of the Tomb Raider though, as week one sales are 25% higher than Rise of the Tomb Raider, although that launched as a timed exclusive for Xbox One while this one launches for PC and PS4 too. Compared to the first game in 2013 though sales are more than 70% down (even if these charts don’t factor digital sales in), with 63% of sales coming on PS4, and the rest on Xbox One (PC is almost entirely digital).

Spider-Man sales are down 42% though, while NBA 2K19 comes in at number three, with 65% of sales on PS4 and 33% on Xbox One, with a tiny 2% on Switch. After a price cut we’ve also seen Elder Scrolls Online reappear in the charts too, and for the full top 10 take a look below.

In what has to be described as a surprise Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 did not manage to claim the number one spot in the UK retail charts from Codemasters’ F1 2018 (last week’s number one) as it launched. While the PS4 version was the best-selling single SKU of the week, clearly Xbox One fans were not as keen on it (only the 16th ranked single SKU), and overall sales dropped 42% compared to last year. Sega enjoyed a strong showing for Yakuza Kiwami 2 in fifth, and Capcom’s Switch exclusive Monster Hunter Generation Ultimate managed ninth, while Sony are no doubt pleased with PSVR title Firewall Zero Hour falling just outside the top 10 in the all formats chart at 11. Rebellion’s Strange Brigade has a slow start down in 16th. Larian’s excellent Divinity: Original Sin II launched on consoles but only managed to hit 23rd spot. Surely, the latter two are disappointments for their respective publishers.

It’s been a slow summer in terms of major video game releases, and as a result Crash Bandicoot: Nsane Trilogy has been racking up number ones in the UK retail charts, but this week there was a bit of action as both F1 2018 and Shenmue I & II overtook the bandicoot preventing him from a ninth (!) straight week at number one. Next week sees the likes of PES 2019, Strange Brigade, and Divinity: Original Sin II on console, releasing so there should be some big movements to look forward to.

As we’ve reported many a time before, Crash Bandicoot and his Nsane Trilogy have held on yet again to the top spot in the UK charts, showing that fans aren’t bored of him despite the original remastered trilogy releasing in the summer of 2017 and the PC, Switch, and Xbox One versions now being almost two months old.

World of Warcraft’s expansion Battle for Azeroth has done well to storm into the number three spot too, sitting nicely behind Grand Theft Auto V, and in fact WoW’s epic conflict is the only new entry in the entire top 10, which you can see down below in full.
