The Legend of Zelda topples Borderlands 3 on the gaming charts

Monday, September 23rd, 2019

Sony and Microsoft have sold more than 135 million PlayStation 4 and Xbox One units if we combine the two, so you’d think Nintendo Switch exclusives would have a hard time reaching the top spot of the boxed sales charts in the United Kingdom. Now we have another example of that not being the case.

It turns out that the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening pushed Borderlands 3 down to second place on the sales charts. Grezzo’s latest title isn’t even the only Switch exclusive on the podium, as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe raced its way to third last week. We’re guessing the launch of the Nintendo Switch Lite helped with the latter.

Congratulations on your great week, Nintendo. Just don’t expect to stay on top in next week’s charts, as FIFA 20 launches this Friday. Still, you are free to enjoy the sight of this top ten from last week’s sales:

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
  2. Borderlands 3
  3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  4. Gears 5
  5. eFootball PES 2020
  6. The Division 2
  7. Grand Theft Auto V
  8. Spyro Reignited Trilogy
  9. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
  10. NBA 2K20

Borderlands 3 is biggest UK boxed launch of the year

Monday, September 16th, 2019

We knew that people were hyped for the arrival of Borderlands 3, bringing the mainline series back after a very long wait, and as revealed by GamesIndustry.biz, it turns out this has translated to good sales figures, since the sequel is the biggest boxed launch of the year in the UK, sitting at number one in the charts this week.

Days Gone was the previous biggest launch, and despite Borderlands 3’s record it actually sold half the number of boxed copies as Borderlands 2. That said, its predecessor launched in 2012, which was a very different time for games, and many prefer digital over physical these days.

Gears 5 sits in second place, selling about 25% of what Gears 4 managed in 2016, and this is even less surprising considering its popularity on the digital Game Pass service. That leaves eFootball PES 2020 at number three, and this is actually up on the last entry, seeing an 18.5% bump in week one sales.

Spiders’ RPG Greedfall is also in the top 10 at five, with Daemon X Machine debuting at 19 and NHL 20 at number 36. For the full top 10, however, check down below.

Can Borderlands 3 stay there?

1. Borderlands 3 / 2K Games
2. Gears 5 / Microsoft
3. eFootball PES 2020 / Konami
4. NBA 2K20 / 2K Games
5. Greedfall / Focus Home Interactive
6. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe / Nintendo

Gaming charts: NBA 2K20 leads a week of low sales

Monday, September 9th, 2019

The end of August was a busy time for the games industry, with titles like Astral Chain, Blair Witch, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan, Control, and more releasing, but it seems that this past week has been a low one in terms of sales, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz.

NBA 2K20 topped the charts this week, and despite debuting three places above last year’s entry, sales are around a third lower than 2K19. It sits just above Spyro’s Reignited Trilogy, which enters the charts again after 92% of sales came from the new Switch version, although this is under 10% of what it managed on PS4 alone during release last year.

Last week’s number one Astral Chain also suffers a 83% dip in sales, falling to number 11, with Wreckfest falling 70% to 10, and Control diving 76% to 14. Man of Medan, however, is still at number three despite a 53% decline.

Catherine: Full Body is at number nine as a new entry, along with Monster Hunter World’s Iceborne expansion at 20, and for the full top 10 you can look down below.

Are you surprised by these results?

The physical UK charts have a lot of new entries this week, and at the top of the pile of Platinum Games’ Switch-exclusive action title Astral Chain, the first UK number one for the developer and the fourth most successful launch for the studio, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz

Astral Chain is also the second biggest launch of a new IP for Platinum since Bayonetta in 2010, and the sixth Switch game to get the top spot in 2019, so it’s a good year for Nintendo’s hybrid console thus far.

The other new releases are all in line behind Astral Chain, with Wreckfest coming it at two, The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan at three, and Control at four. Wreckfest was actually only 1,100 units behind Astral Chain, with Man of Medan 250 units behind that, and Control another 300 units behind Supermassive’s horror game.

Spider-Man also swings into the top 10 for another week, having a 221% sales jump, while last week’s number one Mario Kart 8: Deluxe sits at five.

Crash Team Racing returns to the top of the UK gaming charts

Monday, August 12th, 2019

With all due respect to all the passionate and talented developers out there, we didn’t see any highly-anticipated or major releases hit retailers last week. That’s why Activision’s remake of Crash Team Racing put its foot on the gas again.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled made its way back to the top of the UK sales chart after placing third in last week’s update. It’s not the only game that gained some extra traction due to last week’s lack of new AAA-releases either, as Super Mario Maker 2 jumped from fourth to second, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe shows that kart games are all the rage these days by driving from seventh to third, while Red Dead Redemption 2 decided it was sad to see Grand Theft Auto V as the only Rockstar game amongst the top ten so it placed eighth after ending up in fifteenth last time.

It’s not all good news for games on the list though, as last week’s number one, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, hit the fire alarm at school and took a nosedive down to seventh place. That leaves us with this top ten looking like this:

1. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled / Activision
2. Super Mario Maker 2 / Nintendo
3. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe / Nintendo
4. FIFA 19 / EA
5. Grand Theft Auto V / Take-Two
6. F1 2019 / Codemasters
7. Fire Emblem: Three Houses / Nintendo
8. Red Dead Redemption 2 / Take-Two
9. Minecraft / Microsoft
10. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate / Nintendo

Fire Emblem has another week at the top spot

Monday, August 5th, 2019

Intelligent Systems’ Fire Emblem: Three Houses was released towards the end of July, and it already seems to have made a mark, as it hit the top of the UK physical game charts on its first week, and now GamesIndustry.biz reports that it has achieved a second week at the top spot.

The Nintendo Switch title even had a 60% drop in sales, which reflects the growing trend for the whole games market, with physical games down 15% compared to this time last year. It did almost double the sales of 2013’s Fire Emblem: Awakening though, so it’s certainly been a return to form for the franchise, as reflected in our review.

FIFA 19 was just behind Three Houses too, with only 66 unit sales between them. Wolfenstein: Youngblood falls to eight with a 61% decline in sales, however, while Madden NFL 20 is a new entry at number five.

For the full top 10 look down below. Are you surprised to see Three Houses get a second week at number one?

1. Fire Emblem: Three Houses / Nintendo
2. FIFA 19 / EA
3. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled / Activision
4. Super Mario Maker 2 / Nintendo
5. Madden NFL 20 / EA
6. Grand Theft Auto V / Rockstar
7. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe / Nintendo
8. Wolfenstein: Youngblood / Bethesda
9. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate / Nintendo
10. Minecraft / Microsoft

Super Mario Maker 2 stays firm at number one

Wednesday, July 10th, 2019

Last week Super Mario Maker 2 started its life at the top of the physical UK game charts, and now it’s got a second week at the top spot, despite a dip of 47% in sales from last week, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz.

Crash Team Racing has its own 45% drop in sales, but stays in second place, and F1 2019 also has a 57% drop in sales, staying at number three. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, however, had 9% and 21% increases in sales though, and we can also see Breath of the Wild in the top 10 as well.

FIFA 19 had a 14% increase in sales from last week to rise from 20 to 11, with Mortal Kombat 11 also jumping from 24 to 10 after having a boost of 32% in sales. For the full top 10 though, you can look down below.

What can shift Mario Maker 2?

4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe / Nintendo
5. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate / Nintendo
