Ride Along holds US box office for third week

Kevin Hart and Ice Cube’s Ride Along has landed at the top spot at the US box office for the third weekend in a row.

The comedy made $12.314m over the weekend, raising its total gross to $92.9m.

It beat out the debut of the Zac Efron and Michael B Jordan comedy That Awkward Moment, which came it at third place behind Disney’s Frozen with $9m.

The Nut Job, Lone Survivor and Jack Ryan all dropped spots to numbers four, five, and six respectively.

Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin’s drama Labor Day debuted at number seven, earning $5.3m.

Meanwhile, Aaron Eckhart’s I, Frankenstein, described by filmmakers as a different take on the Frankenstein novel, took a heavy blow after falling from its sixth place debut last weekend to number ten with $3.5m.

The film, featuring an updated version of the Mary Shelley character, cost $65m to make and has so far grossed $14.49m.

Ride Along holds US box office top spot

Kevin Hart and Ice Cube’s Ride Along has landed at the top spot at the US box office for the second weekend in a row.

The comedy added $21.1m to its total gross of $75.4m. It debuted last weekend with $41.2m.

Ride Along beat new release I, Frankenstein, which debuted in sixth place with $8.2m.

Last weekend, Ride Along also beat three new releases – Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, The Nut Job and Devil’s Due.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, starring Chris Pine, Keira Knightley and Kevin Costner, slipped from fourth place to fifth this week with $8.8m.

Animated feature Nut Job remained in third place with $12.3, while horror movie Devil’s Due fell from seventh to tenth with $2.7m.

Lone Survivor, which debuted at number one earlier this month, also kept its second spot this weekend with $12.6m.

Disney’s animated film Frozen continues to stay strong in the top ten list, climbing from fifth place to fourth with $9m. Its total earnings are now $346.8m.

Oscar contenders American Hustle, August: Osage County and The Wall of Wall Street round out the top ten.

Ride Along beats Jack Ryan at US box office

Kevin Hart’s Ride Along has debuted at the top of the US box office.

The action comedy also starring rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube took $41.2m over the weekend to win the top spot on the chart.

It bumped last weekend’s box office winner Lone Survivor to second place. The Mark Wahlberg war film earned $22.3m.

Meanwhile, animated feature The Nut Job debuted at number three with $20.5m, while Chris Pine’s action reboot Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit premiered at four with $17.2m.

Disney hit Frozen rounded out the top five, slipping from second place. So far, the movie’s total gross is $332.6m.

Horror feature Devil’s Due also debuted in the top ten, placing at number seven and earning $8.5m in ticket sales.

Elsewhere, The Legend of Hercules suffered a blow, falling out of the top ten from third place to 13th.

Lone Survivor wins US box office

Lone Survivor has ended Frozen‘s run on top of the US box office.

The Mark Wahlberg-starring film – which dramatises an intense Afghanistan War battle – took $38.5m over the weekend to win the top spot on the chart.

Frozen remained strong in second place after several weeks in the number-one position, by earning $15m over the last several days.

The top five was rounded out by The Wolf of Wall Street, the debuting The Legend of Hercules and American Hustle.

Last weekend’s second place finisher Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones fell sharply to ninth place in its second week of release.

Frozen remained strong in second place after several weeks in the number-one position, by earning $15m over the last several days.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire both fell out of the top ten over the weekend.

Frozen beats Paranormal Activity at US box office

Frozen has beaten Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones at the US box office.

The highly acclaimed animated feature was able to jump from second to first place this week with $20.7m, foiling the Paranormal Activity sequel’s debut.

Despite higher projections, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones finished in second place, making $18.2m in its first weekend of release.

Meanwhile, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug stayed in the top five, coming in at third with $16.25m in takings.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Wolf of Wall Street and Christian Bale’s American Hustle round out the top five.

Ben Stiller’s latest film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty dropped another spot this weekend to number eight with $8.2m, while Stallone and DeNiro’s Grudge Match came in at ten.

The Hobbit 2 remains top at US box office

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has won the US box office for a third week.

The Peter Jackson-directed fantasy sequel fought off competition from Disney’s Frozen, earning $29.9m.

Frozen finished in second place, making $28.8m in its sixth week of release. It now becomes Disney’s most successful film domestically since The Lion King.

Meanwhile, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues came third with takings of $20.2m.

Christian Bale’s American Hustle remains at four in its second week of wide-release, while The Wolf of Wall Street is a new entry at five after taking $18.5m.

Other new entries in this week’s top ten are The Secret Life of Walter Mitty at number seven, earning $13m, and 47 Ronin at nine, with takings of $9.9m.

The Hobbit 2 beats Anchorman 2 at US box office

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has won the US box office for a second week.

The Peter Jackson-directed fantasy beat out the debut of Will Ferrell’s Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, earning $31.4m.

Anchorman 2 came in at second place, making $26.7m.

Christian Bale’s American Hustle and Tom Hanks’s Saving Mr Banks both leapt into the top five after opening into wide-release following small runs in New York and Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, animated feature Walking With Dinosaurs debuted in eight place with $7.3m, while Bollywood film Dhoom 3 made history by premiering at number nine with $3.3m.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug wins US box office

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has knocked Frozen off the top spot at the US box office.

The Peter Jackson-directed sequel to last year’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, based on the book by JRR Tolkien, debuted at number one this weekend with $73.6m.

While Frozen continued strongly this week with $22.1m at number two, Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas premiered in third place with $16m.

The top five was rounded out by Jennifer Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Thor: The Dark World.

Frozen unseats Catching Fire at US box office

Frozen has knocked The Hunger Games: Catching Fire out of the top spot at the US box office.

The Kristen Bell-starring Disney animated movie – which is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen – came in at number-one over the weekend with $31.6m.

Jennifer Lawrence’s The Hunger Game: Catching Fire continued strongly in its third week of release by finishing in second place with $27m.

Out of the Furnace – starring Christian Bale and Casey Affleck in a story of two brothers sucked into the crime world – debuted in third position by taking $5.3m.

The top five was rounded out by Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World and the Vince Vaughn comedy Delivery Man.

Black Nativity and Last Vegas both fell out of the top ten over the weekend.

Catching Fire breaks US box office record

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire broke another US box office record over the Thanksgiving period.

Catching Fire‘s Friday to Sunday screenings amassed $74.5 million, bringing the sequel’s overall total to $296.5m.

Despite landing one place behind Catching Fire, Disney’s latest release Frozen celebrated a record of its own. The Kristen Bell-voiced animation brought in $93m over the long weekend, breaking the Thanksgiving record for highest debut – previously held by Toy Story 2 in 1999 with $80m.

Overall the US box office achieved an all-time high over the holiday weekend, taking in around $294m and beating last year’s record-breaking $291m.

Elsewhere in the chart, Homefront made its debut at number five pulling in $6.9m, while Black Nativity opened at number eight with $5m.

Several movies fell out of the top ten this week, including Gravity after eight weeks.
