Despite being completely panned by critics, Transformers: The Last Knight has taken the top spot at the US box office on its first five days out.
But, before you go celebrating, it didn’t get anywhere near 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction opening weekend total.
The film took $69.1 million – with $45.3 million coming from the weekend – in its first week, and became the first Transformers movie not to open to $100 million or more, marking a franchise low.
2014’s Age of Extinction enjoyed an opening weekend total of $100 million, while 2011’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon debuted with $162.6 million, $97.8 million of that from the three-day weekend.
But it’s not all bad news for The Last Knight, as although it suffered a franchise low in the US, it also managed to score a franchise high in China, picking up $47.9 million on its opening day.
This makes it the third highest opening day total for any release in China, and the only other films to earn more on day one have been the last two Fast and Furious films.
Transformers: The Last Knight did manage to knock Cars 3 off the top spot, though, with Pixar’s latest bringing in $25,175,000 in its second week of release.
And matching Cars 3‘s total this week was DC’s own hit film Wonder Woman, which finished the week at number three with another $25,175,000 to add to its already record-breaking run.
Transformers: The Last Knight marks the the final instalment of the franchise with Michael Bay as director and actor Mark Wahlberg who said this film was his last during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show.
That doesn’t mean the franchise is over though, as there are currently 14 more Transformers stories reportedly in the works, with the Bumblebee spin-off up first and aiming to start shooting in August.
This week’s US box office top 10 in full is as follows:
(-) Transformers: The Last Knight – $45,300,000

Cars 3 has had a roaringly successful opening weekend in theatres. The new Pixar movie, which follows Lightening McQueen trying to prove himself to a new age of cars, has got rather surprisingly good reviews after Cars 2 was panned by critics.
And now audiences have shown their favour for the 18th Pixar film (yes, it’s really been that many) too, after it raced to the top of the US box office, earning $53,547,000 in its debut weekend.
The impressive opening meant that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman was knocked off the top spot after two weeks reigning supreme, although the DC film, which follows Amazon princess Diana as she tries to save the mortal world, still raked in a pretty impressive $40,775,000 this week.
Plus, its debut made it the highest earning female directed movie ever, and it is currently enjoying a US box office total of $274,601,730 after three weeks of release.
Another new entry, All Eyez On Me, came in at number three, earning $27,050,000. The biographical drama about Tupac Shakur, the rapper who was shot and killed in the 1990s, is performing better than expected at the box office.
Meanwhile, after being unable to knock Wonder Woman off its top spot with a disappointing debut last week, The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, slipped two spots in its second week of release, earning another $13,916,000.
47 Metres Down is another new entry this week and rounds out the top five by drawing in $11.5 million. The film sees two sisters get trapped in a shark cage at the bottom of the ocean.
Elsewhere in the top ten there are a couple of other familiar names, with Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge sitting at number six at the box office this week after earning another $8,458,000.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is still clinging on to the top ten after seven weeks of release too, earning a solid $4,982,000 to finish this week in the ninth position.

Universal’s Dark Universe franchise hasn’t got off to the best start as The Mummy has made less money in its debut weekend at the US box office than Warner Bros’ Wonder Woman has made in its second.
Box Office Mojoreports that the monster movie, starring Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella, made $32,246,120 this week, while the Gal Gadot-lead superhero film raked in another $57,180,000.
It’s an especially good week for Wonder Woman too as the second week total means it’s held up better than previous DC films Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad before it.
While Wonder Woman saw a 45% drop in takings between weeks, both of those films suffered a 67% drop between their first and second week takings, with BvS making $51.3 million in week two and Squad making $43.5 million.
“It’s an extraordinary hold for an extraordinary film,” Jeff Goldstein, the distribution chief at Warner Bros, told Variety. “When you open up at this high level, to have only a 45% drop, you just don’t see it.
“This was so far outside of whatever norms we could find. There’s something unique about this character, and there’s something special about the movie Patty Jenkins made.”
At least The Mummy did better than Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. The children’s book adaptation made a less-than-epic $12,300,000 – but it did manage to outperform Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (aka Salazar’s Revenge) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.

Wonder Woman has smashed its debut weekend in cinemas, raking in an incredible $100,505,000 in its opening weekend.
Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot as Diana, Princess of the Amazons who leaves her home after a pilot (hi, Chris Pine) crashes onto Themyscira, the island of the Amazons, and reveals that there’s a war going on in the human world.
Elsewhere in the box office, the only other new entry to get a look-in was Dreamworks’ adaptation of children series Captain Underpants as The First Epic Movie debuted in the second spot at the box office.
It did make considerably less, though, earning a lower yet still respectable $23.5 million on its opening weekend.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge slipped from the top spot to the third in its second week, earning $21,613,000 while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 also slipped two places from second to fourth place, earning $9,733,000.
Baywatch, which stars Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson in a remake that critics have panned but the fans seem pretty fond of (at least according to The Rock), is at fifth place this week, earning another $8.5 million.
Alien: Covenant earned $4 million this week, placing it in the sixth spot, after an epic nosedive of 80% in viewing figures between its first and second week of release. Meanwhile, teen movie Everything Everything came in at number seven with $3,320,000.
Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn’s Snatched is still in the top ten after four weeks, earning $1,340,000, in the number eight spot while Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul came in at number nine earning $1,220,000.
