Star Trek Beyond soars to top of US weekend box office

Sunday, July 24th, 2016

Star Trek Beyond landed atop the weekend US box office, soaring to $59.6m in North American ticket sales and knocking Universal’s The Secret Life of Pets from the No1 spot, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

Pets was the second-most-popular film at theaters, adding $29.3m to its stellar $260m earnings to date.

Paramount’s Star Trek Beyond is the third film since JJ Abrams rebooted the franchise in 2009. Despite the latest release opening $20m behind 2009’s Star Trek, experts say it’s still promising.

“This is a solid enough debut to tell them there’s still enough interest in Star Trek to keep this franchise alive,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for the box office tracker comScore.

Dergarabedian did not think the film was hurt by the unexpected loss of one of its stars. The actor Anton Yelchin, who played Chekov, was killed in a freak car accident last month.

“The tragic passing of Anton Yelchin made it bittersweet for fans,” Dergarabedian said.

The Secret Life of Pets and Ghostbusters bested the weekend’s other new releases. Warner Bros’ low-budget horror Lights Out tied with Ghostbusters for third place with $21.6m, while Fox’s animated Ice Age: Collision Course debuted with $21m.

Fox Searchlight’s Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie opened outside the top 10 with $1.8m.

Fox to live-stream primetime TV shows

Monday, July 11th, 2016

Fox is making history as the first US broadcast network to live-stream its primetime lineup.

Fans of Scream Queens, Bones, Sleepy Hollow, Gotham, Empire and other Fox shows will be able to stream them as they air on TV this autumn – so long as they live in the US.

This live-stream roll-out on Fox.com and the Fox NOW app begins tonight (July 11), just in time for So You Think You Can Dance‘s Top 10 show.

Fox says that live-streaming capabilities will be available to as many as 96 million home across the US.

While special events like the Teen Choice Awards will be streamed on Fox.com and the network’s app, live sporting events will be available on the dedicated FOX Sports GO app.

Fox chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman said today: “From the start of the on-demand and over-the-top viewing revolution, FOX has been at the forefront of providing greater access to our buzz-defining shows, like Empire, Lucifer, Scream Queens and Family Guy.

“Adding nationwide primetime live streams is just another great example of how the FOX Digital Consumer Group, under Brian Sullivan’s leadership, is innovating to give viewers the convenience and flexibility to watch our programming whenever and wherever they want.”

Fox kicks off its fall schedule with a double bill of DC Comics on Monday, September 19 – as Gotham airs at 8pm ET and Lucifer airs at 9pm ET.

The Secret Life Of Pets scores at the US box office

Monday, July 11th, 2016

One set of adorable animals made way for another this weekend at the US box office, as reigning champ Finding Dory was finally deposed and Illumination’s The Secret Life Of Pets took its place at the top of the charts with a studio-estimated $103.1 million.

The second place position is a still under contention, though the estimates show The Legend Of Tarzan currently holding on with $20.6 million, ahead of Dory in third on $20.3 million.

Fourth was new R-rated comedy Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates, which despite that seemingly low start and $16.6 million opening total, also beat expectations.

Central Intelligence used its comedy muscles to hang on at sixth place and added $8.1 million, crossing the $100 million mark in the States. Independence Day: Resurgence continued to underperform and has yet to reach the same point domestically, earning $7.7 million, with its international take holding around $305 million.

The BFG fell to eighth and $7.6 million and barely scraping close to $40 million with its total after a couple of weeks. The Shallows slipped a couple of places to ninth with $4.8 million, but has done well given its thrifty $17 million budget. And at 10 we find Indian romantic comedy wrestling pic Sultan, which is an impressive launch (and $2.2 million in the bank) considering it was playing on just 283 screens.
