Finding Dory overwhelms Independence Day at the US box office

Monday, June 27th, 2016

The tidal wave of Finding Dory overwhelmed the Independence Day sequel at the US box office.

In its second week, Pixar’s sequel to 2003′s Finding Nemo – featuring the voice of Ellen DeGeneres as the forgetful blue fish – easily remained on top with an estimated $73.2 million (£53.4 million).

That figure far surpassed the $41.6 million (£30.4 million) opening of Independence Day: Resurgence.

It debuted well behind its 1996 original, which opened with $50.2 million (£36.7 million), or about $77 million (£56.2 million) in inflation-adjusted dollars.

Elsewhere, Blake Lively’s shark thriller The Shallows rode a wave of good reviews to a better-than-expected $16.7 million (£12.2 million) for Sony.

Matthew McConaughey’s Civil War drama Free State Of Jones disappointed with just $7.7 million (£5.6 million), a blow to the upstart studio STX Entertainment.

Finding Dory sets new box office records in first weekend

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2016

Finding Dory has already set a new box office record – just three days after it was released.

The much-anticipated Disney-Pixar sequel to 2003’s Finding Nemo has had the biggest opening weekend of all time for an animated film, raking in an estimated $136.2 million.

Disney had predicted that the film would earn around $100 million over the weekend, according to The Wrap.

But it surpassed expectations to take the crown from previous record-holder Shrek the Third, which grossed $121.6 million in its opening weekend.

Finding Dory also broke records for the biggest single day at the box office for an animated movie for both Friday and Thursday, beating Shrek the Third and Minions respectively for those days.

The film also broke Pixar records, beating the opening weekend of Toy Story 3, which grossed $110 million in its first few days of release in 2010.

As if all that wasn’t enough, Finding Dory is also the second-largest June opening of all time. It’s beaten only by last year’s monster hit Jurassic World.

Finding Nemo, in comparison, earned $70.2 million in its opening weekend 13 years ago, and has grossed $936.7 million worldwide since.

Finding Dory, which focuses on Dory going in search of her parents, features the voice talents of Ellen DeGeneres, Ed O’Neill, Ty Burrell, Diane Keaton, Albert Brooks and Idris Elba.

It is released in the UK on July 29.

Star Trek’s ‘Chekov’ dies in freak accident, aged 27

Sunday, June 19th, 2016

Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin has died in a car accident at the age of 27.

The Russian-born star was involved in a traffic collision earlier today (June 19), his publicist Jennifer Allen has confirmed. He was tragically hit by his car after it rolled down his driveway.

Los Angeles police spokesperson Jenny Hauser said in a statement: “A fatal traffic collision happened in Studio City.

“On Sunday, June 19 at 1.10 in the morning, a fatal traffic collision occurred. It was the result of the victim’s own car rolling backwards down his steep driveway, pinning him against a brick mailbox pillar and security fence.

“The victim was on his way to meet his friends for rehearsal. And when he didn’t show up, his friends went to his house, where they found him deceased by his car. It appeared he had momentarily exited his car leaving it in the driveway.”

Yelchin was known for his role as Chekov in the Star Trek movies, as well as performances in Terminator Salvation and Like Crazy.

The actor is also set to appear in Star Trek Beyond, which is released later this year.

The Star Trek studio and cast, Anna Kendrick and Guillermo del Toro were among the stars paying tribute to Yelchin, describing him as a “huge loss”.
