Pirates of the Caribbean 5 sails to the top of the US box office

Monday, May 29th, 2017

Pirates of the Caribbean earned itself plenty of fans this weekend, ending its opening week right at the top of the box office with a respectable $62,179,000.

Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson’s Baywatch, on the other hand, was another new entry that failed to perform as well, debuting in the number three spot. The film pulled in $18.1 million in its opening weekend, reflecting the less-than-favourable critic reviews.

What’s a little less encouraging is the fact that Baywatch‘s opening weekend has made less than the unstoppable Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, which has brought in another $19,890,000 in its fourth week of release, having crossed the half billion dollar mark globally in the first two weeks alone.

Elsewhere in the box office top 10, Alien: Convenant fell from the top spot to number four this weekend after bringing in another $10,525,000.

Meanwhile YA drama Everything, Everything came in at number five with $6,185,000, while children ruled the chart yet again by keeping Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul in the number six spot, earning $4.4 million.

Rounding out the top 10 was Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn’s comedy Snatched at seven, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword at eight and Alec Baldwin’s surprise hit The Boss Baby justifying its recent sequel announcement by earning another $1.7 million this weekend to hold onto ninth place.

Finally, Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast is still sitting pretty in the charts, hanging on in tenth place after 11 weeks of release.

Check out the Memorial Day 2017 four-day estimates below:

1 – Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – $77 million
2 – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – $25.1 million
3 – Baywatch – $23 million
4 – Alien: Covenant – $13.2 million
5 – Everything, Everything – $7.4 million
6 – Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul – $5.8 million
7 – Snatched – $4.9 million
8 – King Arthur: Legend of the Sword – $4.1 million
9 – The Boss Baby – $2.3 million

Alien: Covenant opens lower than expected at the US box office

Sunday, May 21st, 2017

Alien: Covenant has scraped its way into the top spot of the US box office in its opening weekend, but it’s still proven to be a bit of a disappointment by failing to perform at the level of 2012’s Prometheus or 2004’s Alien vs. Predator.

According to Box Office Mojo, Sir Ridley Scott’s latest grossed $36 million this weekend to take the top spot – but only just, as it edged out Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 from the top spot after three weeks by just over $1 million dollars.

While it was expected to make a little less than Prometheus‘ opening of $51 million, purely because that film was much more of a mystery to fans before it opened, Forbes notes that making less than Alien vs Predator‘s $38.2 million opening was a bit unexpected.

But at least Scott doesn’t have to be concerned just yet, as the film’s relatively low budget of $97 million means that it can afford to make a little less money and still be considered a success – and it is actually a lot better than Prometheus anyway, so we’ll sure it’ll do the numbers.

Elsewhere in the box office charts, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is still bringing in the crowds as it took another $35,062,000 this week, taking its total US gross to just over $300 million and closer towards even more box office milestones.

The Marvel sequel, starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and Bradley Cooper, has been dominating the box office since it was released at the beginning of May.

Of this week’s other new entries, the latest young adult book adaptation to hit screens brought in the most, with Everything, Everything scooping $12,000,000 over the weekend to finish in third.

The romantic drama follows teenager Maddy (Amandla Stenberg) who is confined to her house due to an illness, until she meets her neighbour Olly (Nick Robinson).

It’s worse news for Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, though, as the fantasy epic continues to fail to attract audiences, picking up another $6,850,000 in its second week of release.

Somehow, we don’t think it’ll be making back its $175 million budget any time soon.

The top five this week was rounded out by Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn’s Snatched and new entry Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, which earned $7,600,000 and $7,200,000 to end the week in the fourth and fifth spots respectively.

Check out the May 19-21 box office figures below:

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword flops at the US box office

Monday, May 15th, 2017

Hollywood movie franchises live and die by the sword, and unfortunately for Guy Ritchie’s retelling of the Arthurian legend, it’s the latter.

Box Office Mojo reports that King Arthur: Legend of the Sword grossed $14,700,000 over its opening weekend, which isn’t great considering that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 notched up $63,007,000 this weekend, and that film came out a week ago.

It’s particularly bad news for King Arthur as the $14.7m opening falls significantly short of estimates, which were already set disappointingly low, and made just a fraction of its $175 million budget, Variety reports.

Sandwiched in between Guardians and King Arthur is Snatched, the comedy film starring Amy Schumer and returning screen icon Goldie Hawn, which did $17,500,000 in gross.

It’s been a rocky road for Ritchie’s latest movie, having been first discussed back in 2010, before being announced and re-announced and delayed numerous times.

A cameo appearance by football mega-star David Beckham wasn’t enough to get bums on seats, although the widespread ridiculing of said cameo probably did more harm than good (although he really wasn’t that bad).

Warner Bros had previously stated that they wanted to make a six-film series about the mythical King and all his Knights of the Round Table, but the disappointing opening weekend and mixed critical reception might have placed the sword firmly back in the stone.

Sandwiched in between Guardians and King Arthur is Snatched, the comedy film starring Amy Schumer and returning screen icon Goldie Hawn, which did $17,500,000 in gross.

Rounding out the rest of the top five are The Fate of the Furious (aka The Fast and the Furious 8) and The Boss Baby, with $5,301,160 and $4,600,000 in box office gross, respectively.

Check out the May 12-14 box office figures below:

Guardians of the Galaxy replace the Fast and the Furious at the US box office

Sunday, May 7th, 2017

As if there was any other outcome for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but it smashed the box office in its opening weekend, giving Marvel a 15th straight flick coming in at the top of the charts.

Star-Lord, Groot and the gang helped the film take a not-so-shabby $145 million this weekend, ensuring the Marvel Cinematic Universe superheroes continue to dominate cinema.

It also marks Disney’s second-biggest release of the year, behind Bill Condon’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, which is still sitting pretty in the number five spot, following the news it had broken $1 billion at the world wide box office.

The Guardians sequel is Marvel’s fifth biggest opening so far, and features the crew on the run from a race of ‘perfect’ beings called the Sovereign, before they hook up with Star-Lord’s long-lost father (played by none other than Kurt Russell).

Elsewhere in this week’s US box office, there are no new entries in the top 10, but Fast & Furious 8 is still dominating at number two, after also smashing the $1 billion mark recently.

The Boss Baby is still in charge at number three and despite bombing against its prediction, Emma Watson’s The Circle is at number six this week.

Check out the May 5-7 box office figures below:

1 – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – $145 million
2 – The Fate of the Furious – $8.5 million
3 – The Boss Baby – $6.2 million

5 – Beauty and the Beast – $4.9 million
6 – The Circle – $4 million
7 – Baahubali 2: The Conclusion – $3.2 million
8 – Gifted  – $2 million
9 – Going In Style – $1.9 million
10 – Smurfs: The Lost Village – $1.8 million
