The Circle fails to slow the Fast and the Furious

Sunday, April 30th, 2017

Despite having an A-list cast and a pretty relevant storyline, Emma Watson’s The Circle failed to light up the box office this weekend, debuting at number four on the US box office chart.

The film took just $9.3 million in its opening weekend against an $18 million budget, and fell short of its projected double digit first weekend total takings, according to Variety.

But then again, it feels like no film will be able to stop Fast & Furious 8 – aka The Fate and the Furious – right now.

The mega franchise’s latest instalment became the second film of 2017 to crash head on into that $1 billion global box office milestone this weekend, and is still sitting pretty at the top of the US box office chart too, pulling in another $19.4 million in its third week of release.

Elsewhere in the box office, the second and third spots went to two new entries, with comedy film How to be a Latin Lover debuting in the number two spot and Indian epic Baahubali 2: The Conclusion coming in third, earning just over $10 million in its first week of release.

The Circle is in fourth place, while rounding out the top five is Alec Baldwin’s The Boss Baby, having earned another $9.1 million in its fifth week of release to make a total US gross of $148.5 million so far.

Which isn’t bad going for a film that tells the story of the epic battle between babies and puppies.

Check out the April 28-30 box office figures below:

1 – The Fate of the Furious – $19.4 million
2 – How to Be a Latin Lover – $12 million
3 – Baahubali 2: The Conclusion – $10 million
4 – The Circle – $9.3 million
5 – The Boss Baby – $9 million
6 – Beauty and the Beast – $6.4 million
7 – Going In Style – $3.6 million
8 – Smurfs: The Lost Village – $3.32 million
9 – Gifted  – $3.3 million
10 – Unforgettable – $2.3 million

Fate of the Furious tops the US box office

Sunday, April 16th, 2017

The latest in the Fast and Furious series has annihilated the competition at the US box office this weekend.

The Fate of the Furious (aka Fast & Furious 8) is on course to set a new global debut record, with it expecting to pass the $529 million made by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in that film’s opening weekend. In the US alone, the film has made a massive $100.2 million in its first week of release.

And while that debut is a big drop on Furious 7‘s domestic opening, which earned over $140 million in its first first week of release, it is also more than the rest of the films in the US Top 10 managed to make this week combined.

And the film lagging so far behind Furious 8 is Fox and DreamWorks Animation’s Alec Baldwin-starring The Boss Baby, which has been knocked off the top spot after bringing in $15.5 million.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast drops another spot down into third place, taking in $13.6 million, but we bet the studio isn’t too unhappy with the fall – especially considering it recently passed the $1 billion mark worldwide and became the biggest live-action musical ever.

Rounding out the top 5 is Smurfs: The Lost Village in fourth place and Going in Style, which stars Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin and Michael Caine in fifth.

Check out the April 14-16 estimates below:

1 – The Fate of the Furious – $100.2 million
2 – The Boss Baby – $ 15.5 million
3 – Beauty and the Beast – $13.6 million
4 – Smurfs: The Lost Village – $6.5 million
5 – Going In Style – $6.3 million
6 – Gifted – $3 million
7 – Get Out – $2.9 million
8 – Power Rangers – $2.8 million
9 – The Case For Christ – $ 2.7 million
10 – Kong: Skull Island – $2.6 million

Boss Baby is still in charge at the US box office

Monday, April 10th, 2017

Boss Baby is still in charge of things at the US box office as it’s retained the top spot for the second week just ahead of Beauty and the Beast.

The animation took in $26.3 million in its second week, and although the Disney remake has taken a whopping $432,316,034 so far, it made $25 million in the last seven days.

Ghost in the Shell still hasn’t managed to claw back much cash after its opening weekend flop, taking just $7.3 million this weekend and dropping to number five – which is a complete disaster against its $110 million budget.

The film has been overshadowed by whitewashing controversy since Scarlett Johansson was announced to be playing the lead, which could have played a part in the flop.

Smurfs: The Lost Village was the highest new movie this week at number three, taking $14 million, with another new entry of Going in Style taking $12 million in its opening weekend.

The Power Rangers reboot has dropped a couple of spots to sixth place, taking $6.2 million this week and Kong: Skull Island is at seventh place by bringing in $5.8 million.

Still clawing in the crowds is Hugh Jackman’s Logan at eighth place, making just over $4 million this weekend, totalling a rather impressive $218,057,408 in the six weeks since its release.

Get Out follows at number nine with $4 million earnings and rounding out the top 10 is new entry The Case With Christ which brought in $3.9 million in the opening weekend.

The Boss Baby tops the US box office

Monday, April 3rd, 2017

It seemed like it was going to be an impossible feat to knock Beauty and the Beast from the top spot of the US Box Office. After all, even Power Rangers couldn’t manage it, despite raking in an absolutely massive $40.5 million last weekend.

But now Alec Baldwin’s Boss Baby has done just that, by taking $49 million in its opening weekend and pipping Emma Watson’s Disney remake to the post.

Belle and her castle full of enchanted objects totalled an impressive $47,543,000 this weekend, making them second in the film’s third week in cinemas.

Meanwhile, fellow new entry Ghost in the Shell debuted at number three – albeit considerably behind the top two films, making less than half the cash with $19 million.

Power Rangers slipped to the fourth spot, making $14.5 million while Kong: Skull Island rounds out the top five with $8.8 million.

X-Men spin-off Logan made $6.2 million, just dropping out of the top five into sixth.

Surprise hit horror film Get Out is continuing to get fans to the cinema, as it made just over $5.8 million in its sixth week, dropping a place from sixth to seventh place in the box office top ten.

Life, the Alien-esque sci-fi horror starring Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal, and buddy cop film CHiPs came in at number eight and number nine, earning $5.6 million and $4.05 million respectively.

Finally, The Zookeeper’s Wife, featuring Jessica Chastain, debuted at the number 10 spot – earning just over $3.3 million in its opening weekend.
