The Other Woman wins US box office

The Other Woman has beaten Captain America: The Winter Soldier at the US box office.

The Cameron Diaz comedy brings the Marvel sequel’s three-week run at the top of the chart to an end after taking $24.7m during its opening weekend.

Fox’s senior vice president of domestic distribution Spencer Klein said: “The combination of the three actresses and a fun movie really struck a chord.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier dropped to second place, taking $16.04m on its fourth weekend.

The Chris Evans film’s domestic total now stands at an impressive $224.9 million and becomes the top-grossing April release of all time in North America.

Heaven is for Real took $13.8m in third place, dropping 38.7% from last weekend. The religious film’s domestic total now stands at over $50 million.

Rio 2 slipped to fourth place with $13.65m, while Paul Walker’s second to last film before Fast & Furious 7, Brick Mansions, opened with $9.6m.

Horror movie The Quiet Ones had an underwhelming opening weekend, debuting at number seven with ticket sales of $4m.

Transcendence, Bears, Divergent and A Haunted House 2 also featured in this week’s top ten.

Captain America 2 wins US box office for a third week

Captain America: The Winter Soldier has won at the US box office again.

The Chris Evans sequel beat competition from Rio 2 and other new releases to spend a third consecutive week at number one.

The Marvel Studios film took $26.6m over the weekend to bring its domestic total to over $200 million, while its global total now stands at $586 million.

Rio 2 took $22.5m in second place. Greg Kinnear’s Heaven is for Real claimed the highest new entry at number three, taking $21.5m.

Meanwhile, Transcendence underperformed this weekend, with ticket sales of $11.15m. The Johnny Depp film was made on a budget of $100m, and was expected to open to $21m.

A Haunted House 2 filled the last spot in the top five with $9.1m, while Draft Day dropped 39.7% to take $5.9m, and Divergent earned $5.75m in seventh place.

Oculus, Noah and God’s Not Dead also featured in this week’s top ten.

Captain America 2 remains on top at US box office

Captain America: The Winter Soldier has won the US box office for a second consecutive week.

The Marvel sequel faced competition from various new releases, but took an estimated $41 million to keep hold of the top spot.

Last weekend, the film broke April box office records by taking $96.2 million during its opening few days. The previous record was held by Fast Five, which collected $86.2 million in ticket sales in April 2011.

Rio 2 wasn’t far behind the Chris Evans blockbuster, with $39m in second place. Karen Gillan’s horror film Oculus took $12m and debuted at number three.

Draft Day – which stars Kevin Costner and Jennifer Garner – took $9.75m to debut at number four.

Divergent dropped 42.2% and took $7.5m to complete this week’s top five.

God’s Not Dead dropped three places to seven, after taking $5.49m in its fourth weekend. The religious film – which was made on a budget of less than $3m – has now passed the $40 million mark at the domestic box office.

Noah, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Muppets Most Wanted and Mr Peabody and Sherman also featured in this week’s top ten.

Captain America 2 breaks record at US box office

Captain America: The Winter Soldier has debuted in the number one spot at the US box office.

The Marvel sequel – which stars Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson – broke April box office records by taking an estimated $96.2 million on its opening weekend.

It surpasses the previous April record set by Fast Five, which collected $86.2 million in ticket sales in April 2011.

Captain America comfortably beat its nearest competition, Russell Crowe’s Noah, which took an estimated $17m in second spot.

Dystopian thriller Divergent slipped to number three and took $13m in ticket sales, bringing its total in the US and Canada to $114 million since its release on March 21.

God’s Not Dead (4) and The Grand Budapest Hotel (5) each rose one place on the latest countdown. The independently-released Christian movie took $7.7m, while the Ralph Fiennes comedy grossed $6.3m.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Sabotage – which opened poorly last weekend – took $1.9m this time around, slipping to eighth place at the domestic box office.

Muppets Most Wanted, Mr Peabody and Sherman, Need For Speed and Non-Stop also featured in this week’s top ten.
