Coppola, Cameron clash over future of 3D

Saturday, May 15th, 2010
James Cameron
James Cameron and Francis Ford Coppola have reportedly clashed over the future of 3D films.

Avatar director Cameron said 2D would soon be outdated as the industry standard, with 3D technology being embraced in all forms of entertainment.

However, Coppola argued that 3D was now “tiresome” and said he couldn’t see the benefit, reports The Daily Telegraph.

Cameron, who was talking at a technology forum in Seoul, said sports coverage and music industry videos would soon succumb to the lure of 3D. He likened its introduction to that of sound and colour in motion pictures.

Avatar has proved that 3D technology is not just a fad but a revolution changing how the audience chooses to consume media and entertainment content,” the 56-year-old said.

Coppola apparently countered: “I don’t see why a movie is better in 3D. I personally do not want to watch a movie with glasses. It’s tiresome.”

The 3D picture is to have a $45m (£30m) budget.

Pete Travis will direct the film with Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich producing. Screenwriter Alex Garland is penning the script.

“Alex Garland’s script is faithful to the original concept that made Judge Dredd a favourite bad-ass hero. It’s a high-octane slay ride through the dark underbelly of the vast future city. A fan pleaser,” said Judge Dredd comic co-creator John Wagner.

He added: “With their track record, I have every faith in Alex Garland, Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich.”

NBC has reportedly decided to cancel Heroes.

According to New York Magazine, the network made the decision because it is pleased with the new series it has ordered.

Earlier reports suggested that Heroes could returm for a final 13-episode season but executives have allegedly decided they no longer need the show because their new programmes are strong.

However, the network is allegedly considering producing a two-hour or four-hour movie to provide an ending for the franchise.

Greg Grunberg, who plays Matt Parkman in the show, recently admitted on Twitter that he does not know its future, saying: “Haven’t heard anything official re: Heroes for next season. Hope it gets picked up.”

NBC declined to comment.
