Team behind ‘Jurassic World’ to produce new sci-fi thriller

Saturday, March 7th, 2015

DreamWorks has picked up the next project from director Colin Trevorrow and co-writer Derek Connolly

The “Jurassic World” team of director Colin Trevorrow and writer Derek Connolly have re-conceived their earlier script “The Ambassador” as a new project titled “Intelligent Life,” which has been acquired by DreamWorks, an individual familiar with the deal has told TheWrap.

“The Ambassador” followed a UN worker tasked to represent humankind if aliens ever made contact with Earthlings, who then falls in love with an otherworldly woman.

The latest incarnation of the project takes that kernel of an idea and expands upon it, so while “Intelligent Life” remains an ambitious sci-fi thriller, it is expected to require a larger budget than “The Ambassador.”

Frank Marshall is producing “Intelligent Life” with Trevorrow and Peter Saraf and Marc Turteltaub of Big Beach, which backed the director’s first feature “Safety Not Guaranteed.” Connolly will executive produce the movie, reuniting him and Trevorrow with Steven Spielberg, who serves as an executive producer on “Jurassic World,” which Universal opens on June 12.

“Intelligent Life” is also the first project DreamWorks has acquired since Michael Wright joined the company as CEO.

Neill Blomkamp: “I fucked up Elysium”

Monday, March 2nd, 2015

Neill Blomkamp has admitted that he feels he “fucked up” Elysium.

The Chappie director claimed that “[he] just didn’t make a good enough film” when working on the 2013 Matt Damon sci-fi.

Elysium is set in 2159 and features a spaceship full of ultra rich passengers flying over a poverty-stricken earth.

Speaking to Uproxx about Elysium, Blomkamp said: “I feel like I fucked it up.

“I feel like, ultimately, the story is not the right story. I still think the satirical idea of a ring, filled with rich people, hovering above the impoverished Earth, is an awesome idea. I love it so much, I almost want to go back and do it correctly.

“But I just think the script wasn’t… I just didn’t make a good enough film is ultimately what it is. I feel like I executed all of the stuff that could be executed, like costume and set design and special effects, very well.

“But, ultimately, it was all resting on a somewhat not totally formed skeletal system, so the script just wasn’t there; the story wasn’t fully there.”

It was announced this year that the Alien series will continue under Blomkamp’s stewardship.
