Spongebob Movie tops US box office

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water has debuted at the top of the US box office.

The children’s comedy starring Antonio Banderas took $56 million during its first weekend in theatres, securing the film the top spot.

Last week’s number one American Sniper falls to number two with takings of just over $24 million, while Jupiter Ascending debuts at number three with $19 million.

Julianne Moore’s Seventh Son enters at number four with just over $7 million, and Paddington rounds out the top five with weekend earnings of over $5 million.

Project Almanac falls to number six, as The Imitation Game claims number seven with $4.8 million.

Kevin Hart comedy The Wedding Ringer is at eight, while Black or White takes nine.

The Boy Next Door completes the top ten with weekend takings of just over $4 million.
