Finding Dory overwhelms Independence Day at the US box office

The tidal wave of Finding Dory overwhelmed the Independence Day sequel at the US box office.

In its second week, Pixar’s sequel to 2003′s Finding Nemo – featuring the voice of Ellen DeGeneres as the forgetful blue fish – easily remained on top with an estimated $73.2 million (£53.4 million).

That figure far surpassed the $41.6 million (£30.4 million) opening of Independence Day: Resurgence.

It debuted well behind its 1996 original, which opened with $50.2 million (£36.7 million), or about $77 million (£56.2 million) in inflation-adjusted dollars.

Elsewhere, Blake Lively’s shark thriller The Shallows rode a wave of good reviews to a better-than-expected $16.7 million (£12.2 million) for Sony.

Matthew McConaughey’s Civil War drama Free State Of Jones disappointed with just $7.7 million (£5.6 million), a blow to the upstart studio STX Entertainment.
