Captain America 2 wins US box office for a third week

Captain America: The Winter Soldier has won at the US box office again.

The Chris Evans sequel beat competition from Rio 2 and other new releases to spend a third consecutive week at number one.

The Marvel Studios film took $26.6m over the weekend to bring its domestic total to over $200 million, while its global total now stands at $586 million.

Rio 2 took $22.5m in second place. Greg Kinnear’s Heaven is for Real claimed the highest new entry at number three, taking $21.5m.

Meanwhile, Transcendence underperformed this weekend, with ticket sales of $11.15m. The Johnny Depp film was made on a budget of $100m, and was expected to open to $21m.

A Haunted House 2 filled the last spot in the top five with $9.1m, while Draft Day dropped 39.7% to take $5.9m, and Divergent earned $5.75m in seventh place.

Oculus, Noah and God’s Not Dead also featured in this week’s top ten.
