Captain America: The Winter Soldier has debuted in the number one spot at the US box office.

The Marvel sequel – which stars Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson – broke April box office records by taking an estimated $96.2 million on its opening weekend.

It surpasses the previous April record set by Fast Five, which collected $86.2 million in ticket sales in April 2011.

Captain America comfortably beat its nearest competition, Russell Crowe’s Noah, which took an estimated $17m in second spot.

Dystopian thriller Divergent slipped to number three and took $13m in ticket sales, bringing its total in the US and Canada to $114 million since its release on March 21.

God’s Not Dead (4) and The Grand Budapest Hotel (5) each rose one place on the latest countdown. The independently-released Christian movie took $7.7m, while the Ralph Fiennes comedy grossed $6.3m.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Sabotage – which opened poorly last weekend – took $1.9m this time around, slipping to eighth place at the domestic box office.

Muppets Most Wanted, Mr Peabody and Sherman, Need For Speed and Non-Stop also featured in this week’s top ten.

Russell Crowe’s Noah has debuted in the number one spot at the US box office.

The biblical epic – which also stars Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson and Ray Winstone – took an estimated $44 million during its opening weekend.

It comfortably beat its predicted $30 million opening, knocking Divergent down to number two with $26.5 million.

Muppets Most Wanted slipped to number three and took $11.4 million. Last week, the sequel opened to a disappointing $16.5 million, which was down from the $29.2 million that its predecessor took during its opening weekend.

Mr Peabody & Sherman dropped 19.7% on last week and fell to fourth place on this week’s countdown, taking $9,500,000.

God’s Not Dead remained consistent with only a slight decrease to $9,075,000 during its second weekend, dropping one place to complete the top five.

The Grand Budapest Hotel enjoyed a 30% rise with $8,825,000 and rose to number six, while Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Sabotage performed poorly, opening to just $5,330,000.

Last year, Schwarzenegger’s Escape Plan and The Last Stand both disappointed at the box office, with $25 million and $12 million respectively.

Divergent has debuted in the number-one spot at the US box office.

The adaptation of Veronica Roth’s young adult novel – which stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet – took an estimated $56 million during its opening weekend.

The figure is one of the strongest opening weekends for a young adult movie. It earned more in its first three days than the recent totals of Beautiful Creatures, The Host and Vampire Academy.

Muppets Most Wanted debuted at number two and took a disappointing $16.5 million, which is down from the $29.2 million that the last Muppets movie earned during its opening weekend.

Mr Peabody & Sherman slipped to third place and fell 46% to $11.7 million in its third weekend of release.

300: Rise of An Empire dropped to four on this week’s countdown, with earnings of $8.67m. The film has now taken $93.8 million at the domestic box office.

God’s Not Dead debuted at number five, taking $8.56 million despite playing in fewer than 1,000 theatres.

Meanwhile, Aaron Paul’s Need For Speed dropped 56% with $7.78 million at number six.

The Grand Budapest Hotel, Non-Stop, The Lego Movie and Tyler Perry’s The Single Moms Club also feature in this week’s top ten.

Mr Peabody and Sherman has climbed to the number one spot at the US box office.

The DreamWorks animation fell 34% in its second week of release to an estimated $21.2 million, but fought off competition from Aaron Paul’s Need for Speed.

The film – featuring the voice of Ty Burrell – lost out to 300: Rise of An Empire last weekend. The Noam Murro-directed sequel slipped to second place this week, dropping 58% to $19.1m.

Video game adaptation Need for Speed debuted in third place with $17.8m.

Liam Neeson’s thriller Non-Stop dropped to four on this week’s countdown, with earnings of $10.6m. The film has now taken $68.8 million and has surpassed Neeson and director Jaume Collet-Serra’s Unknown.

Tyler Perry’s The Single Mums Club had an underwhelming opening weekend, taking a total of $8.3m. It is the lowest opening for a Tyler Perry-directed movie.

The Grand Budapest Hotel made an impressive jump from 17 to eight with $3.6m. Veronica Mars, which was funded by Kickstarter, debuted at ten with $2m.

The Lego Movie, Son of God and Frozen also feature in this week’s top ten.

300: Rise of An Empire has debuted in the number one spot at the US box office.

The Noam Murro-directed sequel – starring Sullivan Stapleton, Lena Headey, Eva Green and Rodrigo Santoro – took $45m on its first weekend.

300: Rise of An Empire is a follow-up to 2006 movie 300, which starred Gerard Butler, Michael Fassbender, Heady and Santoro.

The animated movie Mr Peabody & Sherman debuted in second place with $32.5m.

The two new releases knocked Liam Neeson’s Non-Stop off the number one spot. Non-Stop slipped to third place with $15.3m, earning a total of $52.1m.

The thriller is followed by The Lego Movie in fourth place with $11m, with a total gross of $224.9m. The computer generated film is the first of 2014 to pass $200m at the box office.

The biblical movie Son of God slipped from second place to fifth place on its second week with $10m. Its total gross is now $41.4m.

12 Years a Slave made an impressive jump from 18th place to ninth with $2.1m. Last weekend, the drama took home Best Supporting Actress and Best Picture Oscars.

The Monuments Men, 3 Days to Kill, Frozen and Ride Along round out the top ten.

Syfy has confirmed the US premiere date of Sharknado 2: The Second One.

The B-movie sequel will air on Thursday, July 31 at 9pm PT, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The original Sharknado premiered in July 2013, telling the story of a waterspout that lifts sharks out of the ocean, landing them on the streets of Los Angeles.

Perez Hilton has been confirmed to be making a cameo in the movie along with Biz Markie and Salt-N-Pepa’s Pepa.

Robert Klein will play the former New York City mayor, while professional wrestler Kurt Angle will star as the FDNY fire chief.

Sharknado 2 will centre around a new freak weather system that sends sharks onto the streets of New York City.

Tara Reid and Ian Ziering will reprise their roles as Fin and April, alongside new cast members Vivica A Fox and Mark McGrath.

Kelly Osbourne, Judd Hirsch, Andy Dick and Judah Friedlander were previously announced to be making cameos.

Sharknado proved a surprise hit for Syfy in summer 2013, after trending on social media worldwide. It was seen by 1.4 million viewers during its premiere, and a further 2.1 million watched its repeat broadcast.

Liam Neeson’s Non-Stop has knocked The Lego Movie from the top of the US box office.

The thriller opened to an estimated $30m this weekend, bringing the computer-animated movie’s three-week run at number one to an end.

Non-Stop also stars Julianne Moore, Michelle Dockery and Lupita Nyong’o and was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra.

Neeson stars as US federal air marshal Bill Marks, who is faced with a potential hostage situation during a flight from New York to London.

At number two, Son of God also opened strongly with $26.5m, giving it a far more lucrative debut weekend than similar films like Courageous ($9.1m) and The Nativity Story ($7.8m).

However, the biblical movie’s performance falls short of The Passion of the Christ, which earned over $26m on its first day.

The Lego Movie is down to number three with $21m and has now become the first 2014 release to pass $200 million.

George Clooney’s The Monuments Men is up to four, but was significantly behind the top three with $5m. 3 Days to Kill landed in fifth place, and dropped 60% to take $4.9m in its second week.

Disney’s Frozen sticks in eighth place and has now taken over $1 billion worldwide, with an opening in Japan still to come. It looks likely to enter the all-time Top 10 by the end of its run.

RoboCop, About Last Night, Ride Along and Pompeii also feature in this week’s top ten.

The Lego Movie has held on to the number one spot at the US box office for the third weekend in a row.

The Warner Bros computer-animated movie took in $31.4m, earning a total of $183.1m. It beat two new releases – 3 Days to Kill and Pompeii – for the number one spot.

The Lego Movie features voices from actors including Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks, Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, Alison Brie, Charlie Day and Nick Offerman.

Kevin Costner’s action-thriller 3 Days to Kill debuted in second place with $12.3m, while Pompeii took third place with $10m.

Directed by Paul WS Anderson, Pompeii is a disaster-adventure movie starring Kit Harington, Emily Browning, Carrie-Anne Moss and Kiefer Sutherland.

The RoboCop remake slipped from third place to fourth place with $9.2. The film stars Joel Kinnaman in the title role.

Both Ride Along and Frozen remained on the top ten list after being out for a more than five weeks. The other movies on the list have only been released for two to three weeks.

Ride Along, which premiered on January 17, took the the seventh spot with $4.6m.

Kevin Hart’s comedy was followed by Disney’s Frozen in eighth place with $4.3m. Released in November, the animated feature has been out for 14 weeks. Its total earnings are $324m.

Hart’s other comedy About Last Night, a remake of the 1986 film of the same name, debuted in second place last week, but slipped down to sixth place with $7.4m.

The Monuments Men, Endless Love and Winter’s Tale round up the top ten list.

The Lego Movie has held the number one spot at the US box office for the second weekend in a row.

The computer-animated movie took in $48.8m, earning a total of $129.1m. It debuted at number one last weekend with takings of $69.1m.

Directed and co-written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, The Lego Movie features the voice talents of Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman.

Elizabeth Banks, Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, Alison Brie, Charlie Day and Nick Offerman also star in the Warner Bros movie.

Four new releases made the top ten list – About Last Night, the RoboCop remake, Endless Love and Winter’s Tale.

Starring Kevin Hart and Regina Hall, the romantic comedy About Last Night debuted in second place with $27m, followed by the RoboCop remake in third place with $21.5m.

Endless Love landed in fifth place with $13.3m, while Winter’s Tale debuted in seventh place with $7.7m.

Hart has recently enjoyed box office success with comedy Ride Along occupied the number one spot for three weekends in a row.

Ride Along, which also stars Ice Cube, took sixth place this weekend with $8.7m, earning a total of $116.1m.

The Monuments Men, Frozen, Lone Survivor and That Awkward Moment also feature in this week’s top ten.

The Lego Movie has debuted at the top spot in the US box office.

Directed and co-written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the computer-animated movie landed in first place with $69.1m.

Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman lend their voices for the Warner Bros movie along with Elizabeth Banks, Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, Alison Brie, Charlie Day and Nick Offerman.

The Lego Movie is followed by another new release – George Clooney’s The Monuments Men, which took in $22.7m.

Clooney starred in and directed the war movie, which features an all-star cast including Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray and John Goodman.

The Lego Movie‘s first place debut knocked off Ride Along to third place with $9.3m. The Kevin Hart and Ice Cube comedy occupied the top spot for three weekends in a row with total box office earnings of $105.1m.

Ride Along is followed by Frozen in fourth place with $6.9m. The Disney movie – released in November – continues its stay on the top ten, with total earnings now at $368.6m.

That Awkward Moment, starring Zac Efron, Michael B Jordan and Miles Teller, got bumped from third place to fifth place with $5.5m.

Vampire Academy debuted in seventh place with $5.2m. Starring Zoey Deutch and Lucy Fry, the movie is based on Richelle Mead’s young adult book series.

Lone Survivor, The Nut Job, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and Labor Day round out the top ten movies this weekend at the box office.
