The Fault In Our Stars beats Edge of Tomorrow at US box-office

The Fault in our Stars has debuted at number one at the US box office after taking $48.2m.

Based on John Green’s novel of the same name, the comedy-drama stars Shailene Woodley as a teenage cancer patient who falls in love with a fellow support group member (Ansel Elgort).

The huge opening makes the movie the best-ever debut for a contemporary drama, while it has already made back its $12m budget.

The Fault in our Stars also beat Tom Cruise’s blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow, which came in third place with $29m.

Last week’s number one movie Maleficent is at number two with $33.5m. The Angelina Jolie movie tells the story of the Sleeping Beauty villainess.

The top five is rounded out by X-Men: Days of Future Past with $14.7m and Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West with $7.18m.

Meanwhile, Godzilla slipped from fourth place to sixth with $5.9m. Its total earnings now stand at $185m.

Neighbors ($5.2m), Blended ($4.05m), Chef ($2.6m) and Million Dollar Arm ($1.8m) complete the top 10.

Maleficent casts a spell over US box office

Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent has topped the US box office, grossing $70m in its opening weekend.

Disney’s dark re-working of Sleeping Beauty shot straight to the number one spot, beating Xmen: Days of Future Past and Seth MacFarlane’s new comedy A Million Ways To Die In The West, which placed number two and number three respectively.

Godzilla moved down to number four with sales of $17.06 million, while the top five was rounded out by Blended, which took $8.4 million.

Zac Efron comedy Bad Neighbours made $7.7 million and The Amazing Spider-Man kept pulling in audiences with takings of $3.7 million.

Million Dollar Arm, Chef and The Other Woman also made the top 10.

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ tops US box office chart

X-Men: Days of Future Past has debuted at the top of the US box office with takings of $90.7 million.

The Bryan Singer sequel is now on track to join the five top Memorial Day weekend debuts. Currently topping this chart is Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which made $139.8m during its four day opening weekend in 2007.

X-Men: Days of Future Past, which stars Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, knocked Godzilla off the top spot and pushed it down to number two after the Hollywood remake starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson made just $31.4m over its second weekend, falling 66.3%.

Adam Sandler’s Blended enters the US chart at number three, making $14.2m during its opening weekend.

Bad Neighbours took $13.9m in its third week and falls down to fourth place, while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 drops to five after taking $7.8m, down 53.6%.

Disney’s Million Dollar Arm, starring Jon Hamm, is in sixth place during its second week with $7.1m, and Leslie Mann’s The Other Woman drops two places to seven – making $3.7m.

Rio 2, Chef and Heaven is for Real round out this week’s top ten.

Godzilla soars to the top of US box office

Godzilla has debuted at the top of the US box office with an impressive $93.2 million.

The Gareth Edwards remake – which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Bryan Cranston – scored the second biggest opening weekend of 2014 behind Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier.

Hollywood’s latest take on the kaiju icon also claimed the sixth biggest opening weekend ever for a non-sequel.

Zac Efron’s Bad Neighbors fell to second place, taking $25.9m on its second weekend.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took $16.8m in third place, dropping 52.7% from last weekend. The superhero sequel’s domestic total now stands at over $172m.Disney’s Million Dollar Arm – starring Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm – debuted in fourth place with $10.5m, while Cameron Diaz’s The Other Woman slipped to fifth place with $6.3m.

Heaven Is for Real dropped two places to six with $4.4m. The religious film has now taken $82.2m over the course of five weeks.

Rio 2, Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier, Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return and Moms’ Night Out also featured in this week’s top ten.

HR Giger, Alien creator, dies at 74

HR Giger, the Swiss surrealist artist who designed the Alien Xenomorph, has died at the age of 74.

Giger passed away in hospital on Monday (May 12) after sustaining injuries in a fall, SRF News Online reports.

Born Hans Rudolf Giger in Chur, Switzerland, he studied Architecture and industrial design in Zurich before finding fame in the art world with his book Necronomicon, a compendium of HP Lovecraft-inspired images.

His work came to the attention of Ridley Scott, who hired him to create the titular creature for his 1979 sci-fi horror Alien.

Giger won an Academy Award for his work on the film in 1980, and his iconic Alien design endured across three sequels and a pair of Alien vs Predator spinoff movies.

He returned to the series in 1992 to work with David Fincher on Alien 3 before working on cult ’90s horror Species. Years earlier he did extensive work on Alejandro Jodorowsky’s unmade Dune project.

Giger also directed a number of documentaries, including Swiss Made and A New Face of Debbie Harry.

Neighbors debuts on top at US box office

Neighbors has debuted at top of the US box office this weekend with $51m.

Starring Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron, the film knocks The Amazing Spider-Man 2 off the top spot.

The comic book sequel drops to second place with $37.2 million. Its has earned $147.9m since debuting at number one.

The two films are followed by The Other Woman in third place. The comedy, starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton, earned $9.2m.

The Other Woman, with a total earning of $61.7m, is another former number one.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier remains in the top ten, landing in fifth place with $5.6m. It has earned approximately $244.9m so far.

Elsewhere, Mum’s Night Out debuts at seven with $4.2, followed by Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return in eighth with $3.7m.

Divergent is slowly slipping out of the top ten, dropping from seven to nine with earnings of $1.7m.

Heaven is for Real (4), Rio 2 (6) and Brick Mansions (10) round off the top ten.

Spider-Man 2 debuts number one at US box office

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has debuted at the top of the US box office this weekend with $92m.

The movie, which sees Andrew Garfield and Emma stone reprise their roles as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, features new villains such as Jamie Foxx as Electro and Dane DeHaan as the Green Goblin aka Harry Osborn.

Fellow comic book movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier drops two places to four with $7.7m, while The Other Woman takes second with $14.2m.

The female comedy ensemble debuted last weekend in the top spot, ending Captain America 2‘s three-week streak as the number one movie in America.

The Other Woman, starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton, has so far earned a total of $47.3m.

Elsewhere, Heaven is for Real remains third with $8.7m, while fellow religious movieGod’s Not Dead climbs two places to nine with $1.7m.

The Grand Budapest Hotel also cracked the top-ten, climbing three places to prop up the chart with $1.7m.

The Other Woman wins US box office

The Other Woman has beaten Captain America: The Winter Soldier at the US box office.

The Cameron Diaz comedy brings the Marvel sequel’s three-week run at the top of the chart to an end after taking $24.7m during its opening weekend.

Fox’s senior vice president of domestic distribution Spencer Klein said: “The combination of the three actresses and a fun movie really struck a chord.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier dropped to second place, taking $16.04m on its fourth weekend.

The Chris Evans film’s domestic total now stands at an impressive $224.9 million and becomes the top-grossing April release of all time in North America.

Heaven is for Real took $13.8m in third place, dropping 38.7% from last weekend. The religious film’s domestic total now stands at over $50 million.

Rio 2 slipped to fourth place with $13.65m, while Paul Walker’s second to last film before Fast & Furious 7, Brick Mansions, opened with $9.6m.

Horror movie The Quiet Ones had an underwhelming opening weekend, debuting at number seven with ticket sales of $4m.

Transcendence, Bears, Divergent and A Haunted House 2 also featured in this week’s top ten.

Captain America 2 wins US box office for a third week

Captain America: The Winter Soldier has won at the US box office again.

The Chris Evans sequel beat competition from Rio 2 and other new releases to spend a third consecutive week at number one.

The Marvel Studios film took $26.6m over the weekend to bring its domestic total to over $200 million, while its global total now stands at $586 million.

Rio 2 took $22.5m in second place. Greg Kinnear’s Heaven is for Real claimed the highest new entry at number three, taking $21.5m.

Meanwhile, Transcendence underperformed this weekend, with ticket sales of $11.15m. The Johnny Depp film was made on a budget of $100m, and was expected to open to $21m.

A Haunted House 2 filled the last spot in the top five with $9.1m, while Draft Day dropped 39.7% to take $5.9m, and Divergent earned $5.75m in seventh place.

Oculus, Noah and God’s Not Dead also featured in this week’s top ten.

Captain America 2 remains on top at US box office

Captain America: The Winter Soldier has won the US box office for a second consecutive week.

The Marvel sequel faced competition from various new releases, but took an estimated $41 million to keep hold of the top spot.

Last weekend, the film broke April box office records by taking $96.2 million during its opening few days. The previous record was held by Fast Five, which collected $86.2 million in ticket sales in April 2011.

Rio 2 wasn’t far behind the Chris Evans blockbuster, with $39m in second place. Karen Gillan’s horror film Oculus took $12m and debuted at number three.

Draft Day – which stars Kevin Costner and Jennifer Garner – took $9.75m to debut at number four.

Divergent dropped 42.2% and took $7.5m to complete this week’s top five.

God’s Not Dead dropped three places to seven, after taking $5.49m in its fourth weekend. The religious film – which was made on a budget of less than $3m – has now passed the $40 million mark at the domestic box office.

Noah, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Muppets Most Wanted and Mr Peabody and Sherman also featured in this week’s top ten.
