Beauty and the Beast takes $170 million at the US box office

Sunday, March 19th, 2017

Disney has once again delivered in spreading magical joy and has been rewarded with a massive opening weekend for the live-action remake, raking in a huge $170 million – which is more than Rogue One: A Star Wars Story took in its first weekend out, just by the by.

The film has already managed to take a record from Hugh Jackman’s Logan, which gained the biggest opening of the year so far with $85.3 million in its debut week earlier this month.

According to Collider, Beauty and the Beast is currently sitting in seventh place as the biggest domestic opening of all time, as well as becoming the biggest opening for a PG-rated movie EVER.

In fact, the film is so popular, it’s even outsold the rest of this week’s top 10 put together.

Elsewhere in the top 10, Dan Stevens’ beast pushed a beast of a different sort into the number two position, with Kong: Skull Island taking $28.9 million this week and losing its place at the top of the chart.

Logan dropped to third, taking just $17.5 million for a US domestic total of $184 million, while Jordan Peele’s acclaimed horror Get Out brought in another $13.2 million in its fourth week out to end the week in fourth place.

Rounding out the top 5 is Christian drama The Shack which took $6.1 million, while The LEGO Batman Movie took another $4.7 million to take its total box office takings up to $167 million at number 6.

The only other new entry to the top 10 this week was The Belko Experiment, sitting at number seven, with the eighth spot saved for Hidden Figures, which has now raked in a total of $165 million.

John Wick: Chapter Two took $1.2 million in ninth place, while closing out the top 10 this week is YA drama Before I Fall, after earning $1 million this week.

Check out the March 17-19 weekend estimates below:

1 – Beauty and the Beast – $170 million

‘Logan’ tops the weekend US box office

Sunday, March 5th, 2017

After dazzling critics with his Wolverine swan song, Hugh Jackman has now turned his hand to winning over cinema goers everywhere as Logan has clawed his way to the top of the US box office this week.

The film has enjoyed the biggest opening of the year so far as it made $85.3 million in its debut week in the US – one of the top showings for any R-rated film release in March – and managed to kick Jordan Peele’s low-budget horror film Get Out out of the top spot too.

And it wasn’t just in the US domestic box office that Logan scored big either, earning a global launch total of $237.8 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter, including a $46.2 million debut in China.

Despite losing its place at the top of the box office charts, Get Out still enjoyed another week of impressive box-office sales, earning $26.1 million to end the week in the No.2 spot and take its box office total up to $75.9 million.

And that was still way ahead of this week’s third spot, which marked another debut in the form of the new Christian drama film The Shack.

The film stars Sam Worthington, Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer and country singer Tim McGraw and debuted to $16.1 million.

Get Out topples Lego Batman at the US box office

Monday, February 27th, 2017

It’s not often a horror movie tops the Box Office and receives lots of critical acclaim, but Get Out has done just that.

The comedy-horror film – which stars Daniel Kaluuya (Black Mirror, Skins) and Girls’ Alison Williams – has soared to the top of the US Box Office $30,524,435 this weekend.

It knocked the Lego Batman Movie from the top spot in its third week in the charts.

The film stars the voice talents of Will Arnett and Michael Cera and fell to the second spot and earned considerably less this weekend, taking $19 million.

In the third spot, Keanu Reeve’s John Wick: Chapter Two jumped up a place after earning $9 million, while The Great Wall fell a slot to come in fourth.

Fifty Shades Darker, the sequel to Fifty Shades of Grey, fell three places from two to five after that Valentine’s Day rush.

Fist Fight, the comedy starring Ice Cube and Charlie Day got the sixth spot in the chart.

Meanwhile Hidden Figures, the highest-charting Oscar nominated film, got the sixth spot. It stars Viola Davis and follows three African-American women’s contributions to the space race of the 1960s.

La La Land, the favourite for Best Picture at tonight’s (February 26) show, is still in the top ten in its twelfth week in the chart.

Split, starring James McAvoy, is also still clinging on at number 9, while the final Oscar nominee, Lion, rounds out the list at number 10.

Check out the Feb. 24-26 box office estimates below:

1. Get Out – $30.5 million

The LEGO Batman Movie fends off Fifty Shades Darker for a second week

Sunday, February 19th, 2017

Fifty Shades Darker may be the film of choice for S&M lovers, but that hasn’t stopped it from getting another good spanking from The LEGO Batman Movie in this week’s US box office.

The second cinematic outing of EL James’ franchise failed to take the top spot for a second week running, with The LEGO Batman Movie taking in almost twice as much as Christian Grey and Ana Steele’s latest kink-fest.

The LEGO Batman Movie stars Will Arnett and Michael Cera and follows the adventures of Bruce Wayne and his adopted son Dick Grayson, and it certainly seems to be hitting all the right notes with cinema goers, taking an impressive $34.2million at the box office this week.

Falling significantly short of those takings was Fifty Shades Darker, which charted in the number two position for a second week running with $20.9million – but it still managed to beat Matt Damon’s The Great Wall, which took just over $18million in its first week of release.

Dropping to four was Keanu Reeves’ second outing as the titular much-wanted assassin in John Wick: Chapter 2 with $16.5million, while rounding out the top five was Ice Cube and Charlie Day’s high school comedy Fist Fight, earning a respectable $12million.

Batman may have reigned supreme once again this week, but it was a tougher week for our off-screen heroes, as many of this year’s Oscar nominees dropped down the charts.

Taraji P Henson, Janelle Monáe and Octavia Spencer’s Hidden Figures dropped out of the top 5 this week, falling to 6th place after taking another $7.1million, and La La Land fell to nine after taking another $4,500,000 this week.

Elsewhere in the top 10, M Night Shyamalan’s Split is still going strong despite dropping three places into the 7th position and earned itself another $7million, while A Dog’s Purpose took $4.6million to place 8th and A Cure for Wellness is a new entry at 10, taking $4.2million.

Check out the three-day Feb. 17-19 weekend box office estimates below:

1. The LEGO Batman Movie – $34.2 million
2. Fifty Shades Darker – $21 million
3. The Great Wall – $18.1 million
4. John Wick: Chapter 2 – $16.5 million
5. Fist Fight – $12 million
6. Hidden Figures – $7.1 million
7. Split – $7 million
8. A Dog’s Purpose – $5.6 million
9. La La Land – $4.5 million
10. A Cure for Wellness – $4.2 million
