It has still got it. Warner Bros. and New Line’s big-screen adaptation of the Stephen King horror novel is on track to gross an estimated $60 million in the U.S. and Canada this weekend, topping the box office for a second time. On the flip side, Darren Aronofsky and Jennifer Lawrence’s psychological thriller mother! is stumbling with an estimated a $7.5 million debut.
After a record-breaking bow last week, It declined just 51 percent, bringing its domestic total to an estimated $218.7 million after just 10 days in theaters. The movie is now the highest-grossing September release ever, eclipsing the $174.8 pulled in by Crocodile Dundee in 1984. It is also set to add another $60.3 million overseas, which would put its worldwide tally at $371.3 million.
Andy Muschietti (Mama) directed It, which stars Jaeden Lieberher, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Chosen Jacobs, Wyatt Oleff, and Jeremy Ray Taylor as a group of unpopular kids in small-town Maine who battle an evil presence that feeds on its young victims’ greatest fears. Bill Skarsgard portrays the malevolent being in its favored form, a demonic clown named Pennywise.
Fortunes are looking less favorable for mother!, which is on pace to come in well below industry projections of about $11 million. That puts it in third place for the weekend and resets the bar as the lowest nationwide release of Lawrence’s career (displacing The House at the End of the Street and its $12.3 million five years ago).
Despite having a name director in Aronofsky and a star-studded cast — including Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer — mother! was largely rejected by audiences. They hit it with an F CinemaScore, putting it in rare company and likely hobbling word-of-mouth prospects. Critics’ reviews were not as dire but still somewhat mixed.
The film, which Aronofsky also wrote, stars Lawrence as a young woman whose tranquil life with her husband, a creatively blocked poet (Bardem), is upended by the arrival of an enigmatic couple.
Sliding between It and mother! at the No. 2 spot is another R-rated film, American Assassin. The new release, which marks Dylan O’Brien’s first time back on the big screen since his serious injury on the set of Maze Runner: The Death Cure last year, will gross about $14.8 million this weekend. It’s a solid bow for the action-thriller, about equal to that of the original John Wick (which just got a second sequel).
Directed by Michael Cuesta (Kill The Messenger), American Assassin stars O’Brien as a CIA black-ops recruit under the tutelage of a Cold War veteran (Michael Keaton). Critics were unimpressed by the film, but audiences gave it a respectable B-plus CinemaScore.
Rounding out the top five are the Reese Witherspoon romantic comedy Home Again, with an estimated $5.3 million, and the Ryan Reynolds-Samuel L. Jackson action-comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard, which an estimated $3.6 million.
According to ComScore, overall box office is down 4.9 percent year-to-date. Check out the Sept. 15-17 figures below:

After Hollywood limped through a dismal summer movie season, Warner Bros. and New Line’s big-screen adaptation of Stephen King’s It is on track to gross a stellar $117.2 million in the U.S. and Canada in its first weekend, far surpassing industry projections and the competition.
The opening should break several box office records, including the largest September debut (previously set by Hotel Transylvania 2‘s $48.5 million in 2015) and the largest opening for a horror movie. It also marks the second-best opening for an R-rated movie (behind Deadpool‘s $132.4 million) and the third-highest opening of 2017 (behind Beauty and the Beast and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2). In addition to its 4,103 locations in North America, It is expected to take in about $62 million from 10,665 screens in international markets.
Directed by Andy Muschietti (Mama), It stars Finn Wolfhard, Sophia Lillis, Jaeden Lieberher, Jack Dylan Grazer, Chosen Jacobs, Wyatt Oleff, and Jeremy Ray Taylor as a group of unpopular kids in small-town Maine who are forced to confront their greatest fears when an evil presence (the eponymous “It”) starts preying on local children. Bill Skarsgard plays Pennywise, the demonic clown manifested by It.
The weekend’s other new wide release, Open Road’s romantic comedy Home Again, is on pace for a distant second place with an estimated $9 million. Directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, daughter of rom-com master Nancy Meyers, the film stars Reese Witherspoon as as a single mom in Los Angeles whose life takes a turn when she lets three young men crash in her guest cottage.
Rounding out the top five are Lionsgate’s action-comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard ($4.9 million), Warner Bros. and New Line’s chiller Annabelle: Creation ($4 million), and the Weinstein Co.’s crime thriller Wind River ($3.2 million).

Let’s face it, this summer’s US box office has been a complete bust, with figures at the lowest for a decade, and it’s now turned out to be the worst Labor Day weekend in over two decades.
Revenue for the holiday weekend is expected to land at around $100 million, which is down 22 percent from last year – and there have been no big releases either.
As for the current chart, there are no new entries in the top 10, and so it hasn’t dramatically changed from last week really, according to Box Office Mojo.
The Hitman’s Bodyguard is still holding tough onto the top spot in its third week taking $10,250,000 over the weekend.
The comedy, which stars Ryan Reynolds as a celebrity bodyguard tasked with protecting a legendary hitman played by Samuel L Jackson, has now made $54,944,214 so far.
Horror sequel Annabelle: Creation is still sitting at number two, with a weekend revenue of $7,300,000 and almost $89 million gross total against a $15 million budget – it seems people still like a fright even when it’s not Halloween.
The third spot is held by Wind River which took $5,863,074 this weekend and Leap!, which stars Elle Fanning as an aspiring ballerina, is at number four after pulling in $4,886,923.
Logan Lucky, starring Channing Tatum and Adam Driver attempting a heist at NASCAR remains at number five, but still struggling to even hit its $29 million budget.
As the top grossing film for two weeks in a row, The Hitman’s Bodyguard is doing very well at the US box office. This week the makers of the action comedy are faced with a serious setback though, as a high definition copy of the film has leaked online. It’s unknown how this will impact future grosses, but movie studio Millennium Films might have to confront pirates head-on.
The Hitman’s Bodyguard is an action comedy movie featuring Hollywood stars Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds.
While this hasn’t been a great summer at the box office, the makers of the film can’t complain as they’ve taken the top spot two weeks in a row. While this is reason for a small celebration, the fun didn’t last for long.
A few days ago several high-quality copies of the film started to appear on various pirate sites. While movie leaks happen every day, it’s very unusual that it happens just a few days after the theatrical release. In several countries including Australia, China, and Germany, it hasn’t even premiered yet.
The Hitman’s Bodyguard has protected its slot at the top of the US Box Office, netting $10,050,000 over the weekend.
The comedy, which stars Ryan Reynolds as a celebrity bodyguard tasked with protecting a legendary hitman played by Samuel L. Jackson, has now made $39,614,004 in two weeks according to Box Office Mojo.
Horror sequel Annabelle: Creation has to settle for second place, having made $7,350,000 over the weekend.
Third place is taken by new animated release Leap!, which stars Elle Fanning as an aspiring ballerina.
The film earned $5,015,500 over the weekend.
Wind River rises six places from number 10 to number four, after earning $4,410,610. Wind River, which stars Jeremy Renner, follows an FBI agent as he teams up with a veteran game tracker to investigate a murder.
The top five is completed by Logan Lucky, which has fallen two places over the past week.
The comedy, which stars Channing Tatum and Adam Driver as brothers trying to pull off a heist during a NASCAR race in North Carolina, made $4,366,894 over the weekend.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard has fired straight to the top of the US box office for the opening weekend, snatching the number one spot from Annabelle: Creation, which falls to number two.
The Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds film grossed $21,600,000 against a $29 million budget, so not exactly setting anything on fire, but it still isn’t that horrific.
Quite surprisingly, debuting in the third spot is Logan Lucky which took just $8,050,182 in its opening weekend, again against a $29 million pre-marketing budget, which is pretty terrible really.
Starring Daniel Craig, Channing Tatum and Adam Driver, Logan Lucky was probably expecting to do much better really, especially when you factor in the awesome cast, but like we said before – summer.
Thanks to those two new releases, Dunkirk falls to four this week after taking $6,700,000 this weekend, making it $165,508,079 since its release five weeks ago.
Rounding out the top five is The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature, which grossed $5,113,278 this weekend – totalling $17,696,923 so far, which is massively below its $40 million budget.
The rest of the top 10 this week consists of The Emoji Movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Girls Trip, The Dark Tower and Wind River.
