Jumanji knocks The Last Jedi off the top of the US box office

January 7th, 2018

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has knocked Star Wars: The Last Jedi off the top of the US Box Office and perhaps unexpectedly, so has Insidious 4.

After three weeks at the top, Rian Johnson’s Star Wars movie was felled by the Jumanji reboot, which took $36 million in its opening weekend, according to figures from Box Office Mojo.

In second place was the latest installment in the Insidious franchise, which has proved to be a bit of a hit.

Insidious: The Last Key took $29.6 million, meaning that it also beat out The Last Jedi, which took just $23 million this week.

Given that The Last Jedi has already made over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, we doubt Disney is too concerned.

Fourth place goes to Hugh Jackman’s polarising but no less enjoyable The Greatest Showman ($13.8 millions), and fifth went to Pitch Perfect 3 ($10.2 million).

In at sixth place is John Cena animated vehicle Ferdinand ($7.7 million) and seventh went to Molly’s Game ($7 million).

Winston Churchill biopic Darkest Hour came in eighth place, taking $6.4 million and in at nine is the yet-to-be-released-in-the-UK Pixar animation Coco, which took $5.4 million.

Rounding off the top 10 is Ridley Scott’s much-discussed All the Money in the World, which famously saw Christopher Plummer replace Kevin Spacey after he was removed from the movie.

The Last Jedi again tops the US box office

January 1st, 2018

It’s another incredible weekend for Star Wars: The Last Jedi — as it maintains its top spot at the US box office and reaches a huge milestone in ticket sales.

The latest entry in the Star Wars film series has now passed $1 billion in ticket sales internationally and become the year’s biggest domestic box office hit, just three weeks after it debuted in cinemas around the world.

This milestone was reached thanks to The Last Jedi once again winning the US box office for the New Year holiday weekend, pulling in an impressive $52.4 million over the three-day period (via Box Office Mojo).

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now only $15 million behind Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to overtake its spot as the seventh highest-grossing movie in US history.

The Last Jedi maintained its hold over the box office despite some stiff competition from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which only narrowly missed surpassing Star Wars with a $50.5 million haul.

Finishing in third place this weekend with $17.8 million is musical comedy Pitch Perfect 3, likely adding some more momentum to talk the series continuing with stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson.

The highest-charting newcomer of the week was Sir Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World, in at the number-seven slot this week with $5.4 million.

Scott’s J. Paul Getty biopic has been a surprising critical success story of awards season, given that the filmmaker was forced to completely replace Kevin Spacey’s central performance mere weeks before release with new scenes starring Christopher Plummer.

The Last Jedi dominates this weekend’s US box office

December 18th, 2017

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has – unsurprisingly – destroyed all competition at the US box office this weekend.

The much-anticipated sequel, directed by Rian Johnson, has opened to $220 million according to Box Office Mojo, who provide the top ten and their grossing amounts below.

This gives the film the second-best domestic opening ever behind its predecessor, The Force Awakens, which earned $247.966 million.

The Last Jedi stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Andy Serkis, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran and Benicio del Toro.

Following up in second place is another new release in the form of Ferdinand. The animation, which stars wrestler John Cena as a pacifist bull named Ferdinand who refuses to participate in bullfighting, earned $13,325,000 over the weekend.

It also stars Kate McKinnon, David Tennant, Bobby Cannavale and Peyton Manning.

Last week’s number one, Coco, drops to third place having won $10,025,000. The Disney Pixar animation follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel Rivera (Anthony Gonzalez) who is accidentally transported to the land of the dead.

Wonder, which stars Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts, drops one place to number four after racking up $5,400,000 in earnings.

The drama features The Room‘s Jacob Tremblay as a child with Treacher Collins syndrome trying to fit in.

The top five is rounded out by DC’s Justice League, which previously held second place. The divisive superhero movie, which stars Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Henry Cavill and Ray Fisher, earned $4,170,000 this weekend.

Coco continues to kick Justice League’s ass at the US box office

December 4th, 2017

There’s been little movement in the US box office charts this weekend, as the top six remains the same as last week.

Disney Pixar topped the list once again with animation Coco, earning an impressive $26,114,000 over the weekend, according to BoxOfficeMojo.

Coco‘s triumph left superhero movies Justice League and Thor: Ragnarok reeling in its wake – in second and fourth place respectively.

The animated film is based upon the festive Mexican holiday Día de Muertos, which honours the dead – and follows the story of Miguel, a 12-year-old who yearns to become famous.

His family isn’t best pleased about his bold aspirations, which leads to him resisting the celebrations of the Day of the Dead

Miguel then ends up on the other side and seeks the help of his great-great-grandfather in getting back to his family of the living.

The concept is obviously a hit with critics as well as audiences, as Coco also boasts a 96% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Meanwhile, in third place was Wonder, the movie adaptation of the best-selling book about a young boy with facial deformities determined to lead a ‘normal’ life.

Starring Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson, the film earned $12,500,000.

In fifth place was comedy Daddy’s Home 2, starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell, as sixth position was taken up by Murder on the Orient Express.

Coming-of-age comedy-drama Lady Bird, starring Saoirse Ronan, made it into seventh position, while Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Star and A Bad Moms Christmas rounded out the top 10.

Check out the Dec. 1-3 figures below:

1. Coco — $26.1 million
