Justice League has DCEU’s worst-ever domestic opening

Sunday, November 19th, 2017

Justice League has won the US box office this week – but sadly it hasn’t done much for the DC Extended Universe, as its the franchise’s worst domestic opening yet.

It opened to $96 million, which is some distance short of the $110 million predicted by the film’s studio, Warner Bros.

According to Variety, it’s the eighth largest opening of 2017, but the lowest launch for any DCEU movie, trailing Wonder Woman, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Man of Steel.

Justice League, which features Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and the Flash (Ezra Miller), has received mixed reviews from critics since its release earlier this week.

Wonder, on the other hand, has fared well, as it opened above expectations to $27 million. The film stars Jacob Tremblay as a young boy with a facial deformity and Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson as his parents.

Last week’s box office topper, Thor: Ragnarok, dropped two places into third but earned a strong $21 million.

It’s the third Thor instalment in the Marvel franchise, starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Tessa Thompson, Cate Blanchett, Karl Urban, Jeff Goldblum, Anthony Hopkins and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Daddy’s Home 2 also fell two places into fourth, having earned $14.8 million in its second weekend.

The sequel stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as co-dads Brad and Dusty who have to deal with their own fathers, played by John Lithgow and Mel Gibson, visiting for Christmas.

The top five is rounded out by Murder on the Orient Express, which netted $13.8 million over the weekend.

The Kenneth Branagh murder mystery stars Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Josh Gad, Michelle Pfeiffer and Daisy Ridley.

Ragnarok slays Daddy’s Home 2 and Murder on the Orient Express

Sunday, November 12th, 2017

Thor: Ragnarok has once again stormed its way to the top of the US Box Office, beating out several high profile new entries.

The Marvel movie made $56.6 million in its second week of release in the US, beating out all-star newcomers Daddy’s Home 2 and Murder on the Orient Express.

Daddy’s Home 2, which stars Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, John Cena, John Lithgow and Mel Gibson followed Thor in second place with $30 million, while Sir Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie adaptation trailed even behind that.

The movie, which boasts an even larger A-list cast including Branagh, Judi Dench, Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Olivia Colman, Josh Gad and Johnny Depp, took just $28.2 million in its opening weekend at the US box office.

Which is a mere fraction of what Ragnorak took last weekend.

It was a worse weekend for last week’s runner-up A Bad Moms Christmas, which came in at fourth place this week with $11.5 million.

The movie was followed by Jigsaw ($3.4 million), Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween ($2.1 million), Geostorm ($1.5 million), Blade Runner 2049 ($1.4 million) and Happy Death Day ($1.32 million) respectively.

Another new entry this week was Greta Gerwig’s directional debut Lady Bird, which took a modest $1.249 million and rounds off our top 10.

The movie stars Saoirse Ronan as a Catholic school girl figuring her stuff out in California.

Tipped for awards season success, the movie also stars Laurie Metcalf (The Big Bang Theory) and Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea).

Thor: Ragnarok hammers rivals at the US box office

Sunday, November 5th, 2017

Thor: Ragnarok has smashed its way to the top of this week’s US box office.

The movie – which is the third in the Thor anthology and stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum and Benedict Cumberbatch – took a staggering $121 million during its first week of release in the States.

If that wasn’t impressive enough, Ragnarok also took seven times more than its closest rival and this week’s second-highest earner A Bad Moms Christmas, which made just over $17 million.

A Bad Moms Christmas sees Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn return as the trio of rebellious mothers from the first movie.

Despite the addition of Susan Sarandon, Christine Baranski and Cheryl Hines, it failed to make a seventh of the impression that Ragnarok did.

Hmm. Maybe that’s what you get for releasing a Christmas film in early November.

Charting in third place was horror film Jigsaw, taking a modest $6.7 million in its first post-Halloween week, followed by Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween ($4.5 million) and Gerard Butler’s disaster movie flop Geostorm ($3 million) respectively.

Rounding off the top 10 this week were Blumhouse Productions slasher parody Happy Death Day ($2.8 million); military and PTSD drama Thank You For Your Service ($2.6 million), the critically acclaimed but modestly-selling Blade Runner 2049 ($2.235 million), Only The Brave ($1.9 million) and The Foreigner ($1.5 million).

Check out the Nov. 3-5 figures below:

1. Thor: Ragnarok — $16.3 million
2. A Bad Moms Christmas — $17 million
3. Jigsaw — $6.7 million
4. Boo 2: A Madea Halloween — $4.7 million
5. Geostorm — $3 million

7. Thank You for Your Service — $2.3 million
8. Blade Runner 2049 — $2.2 million
9. Only the Brave — $1.9 million

Picking up after the death of the series’ killer, Jigsaw, the horror movie enjoyed Halloween success as the first Saw film since 2010.

Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween slipped into second place at the box office this week, while sci-fi disaster film Geostorm, starring Gerard Butler, slipped into the third spot.

Boo! 2 tops the US box office for Halloween

Sunday, October 22nd, 2017

A slow weekend at the US box office saw Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween top the charts, earning $21.7 million at 2,388 North American locations.

The comedy sequel, which Perry also directed and wrote, sees Madea try to save a bunch of teens at a haunted campground.

Other new films – including Geostorm, The Snowman and Only the Brave – did not fare so well, according to Variety.

The Gerard Butler-starring Geostorm entered the box office in second place, but only took $13.3, despite its estimated $100 million budget.

The disaster movie imagines a world where a network of satellites have been designed to control the global climate.

When they start to attack Earth with life-threatening storms, two estranged brothers are tasked with solving the malfunction before a deadly Geostorm can engulf the planet.

Comedy-horror Happy Death Day sits in third place with takings of $9.4 million after topping the box office last week.

It’s performing very well considering it had a budget of just $4.5 million.

Blade Runner 2049 drops two places into fourth, making $7.4 million over the weekend.

Only the Brave enters in fifth with $6 million. The biographical drama, which stars Josh Brolin and Miles Teller, is based on the story of 19 Arizona firefighters who died in the 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire.

Jackie Chan-starring action The Foreigner is in sixth place with $5.6 million, while The Snowman is a new entry at number seven, tying with It.

The Snowman stars Michael Fassbender as a detective on the trail of a killer who uses snowmen as his calling card.
