Netflix loses thousands of movie titles to Hulu

Tuesday, September 1st, 2015

Thousands of movies are being removed from Netflix in the US after the streaming service decided not to renew a deal with distributor Epix.

Movies from the Hunger Games and Transformers series are just some of the blockbuster titles to be dropped from the service, which will now focus more on original content.

The films will disappear from the service when the $1bn deal between Netflix and Epix expires later this month.

Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos wrote: “While many of these movies are popular, they are also widely available on cable and other subscription platforms at the same time as they are on Netflix and subject to the same drawn out licensing periods.”

Following the end of the Netflix deal, the Epix catalogue will be picked up by Hulu.

“Our subscribers have been asking us for more, and more recent, big movies,” Hulu said in a statement.

“We listened. Through this new deal with Epix, we are proud to now be able to offer a huge selection of the biggest blockbusters and premium films.”

Elsewhere, Netflix recently added a load of exclusive projects aimed at ‘tweens’, including films from popular YouTubers.

Wes Craven dies, aged 76

Monday, August 31st, 2015

Award-winning film director Wes Craven has died at the age of 76.

The creator of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise passed away at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday (August 30) after battling brain cancer.

Craven was particularly known for his work on horror and slasher films having made his directorial debut in 1972 with The Last House on the Left.

Over the course of his decades-spanning career, Craven redefined the horror genre with his work on such films as Nightmare on Elm Street, Swamp Thing and the wildly popular Scream series, which later developed into a franchise consisting of several movies and a TV spinoff series for which Craven also served as an executive producer.

In addition to a highly-successful film career Craven was also a published author having released his novel Fountain Society in 1999.

More recently, the director had collaborated with 30 Days of Night co-creator Steve Niles on his first comic Coming of Rage that was released late last year and was working with producer Arnold Rifkin’s Cheyenne Enterprises and Liquid Comics on adapting the comic into a television series.

Craven is survived by his wife, producer and frequent collaborator Iya Labunka.
