Warner Bros will re-release all eight Harry Potter movies on limited theatrical runs once they have been converted to 3D.
The studio’s domestic distribution president Dan Fellman confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that J.K. Rowling’s fantasy saga will be heading back to cinemas after the release of next July’s closing chapter, Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
“I don’t think a wide theatrical re-release could sustain the costs of a modern marketing campaign,” Fellman said of plans for the relaunch.
Earlier this year Potter producer David Heyman admitted that it was “just a matter of time” before the films get re-purposed for the 3D format.
Warners last month announced that the Potter franchise, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, was being targeted for release on 3D Blu-ray.
The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 currently sits at the top of the US box office after a $125 million opening weekend. Worldwide the series has pulled in $205 million on its first five days on release.
