Smallville producer Brian Peterson has claimed that the forthcoming series finale could surprise viewers.
The CW drama, which stars Tom Welling as Clark Kent, will conclude its run later this year after ten seasons.
"Every version of Superman in the movies, comics and TV show[s] is a slight variation on a theme," Peterson told Assignment X. "As long as there is respect for the character and the basis of that character, there can be a lot of different interpretations."
He added: "I think we will walk that balance rather nicely. That's our goal."
The showrunner also admitted that he has mixed feelings about the series finally coming to an end.
"It's going to be very bittersweet to leave these characters we've seen [for] so long and we love so much," he confessed. "But I want to feel inspired [by the finale], as a fan. That's what I want."
It was recently confirmed that Michael Rosenbaum will reprise his role as Lex Luthor in the Smallville finale, which is currently scheduled to air on May 13.
