Showtime has officially renewed the Kirsten Dunst-led dark comedy for a second season today. The news comes several weeks after the series premiered on the cable network, with four episodes to go until its season finale.

“With such imaginative storytelling and an absolutely inspired lead performance, ‘On Becoming a God in Central Florida’ has been a revelation,” said Jana Winograde, Showtime’s Co-President of Entertainment. “Kirsten, Esta, Robert, Matt and Charlie have crafted a wondrous blend of satirical light within the economic and emotional melancholy that confronts so many Americans. We couldn’t be happier that ‘On Becoming a God’ is on Showtime, nor more eager to see what wild events await our ensemble in the downline of season two.”

Created by Robert Funke and Matt Lutsky, “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” takes place in a small Orlando-adjacent town in 1992, and follows a minimum-wage water park employee who lies, schemes, and cons her way up the ranks of the same cultish, flag-waving, multibillion-dollar pyramid scheme that drove her family to ruin.

In addition to Dunst, the show’s cast includes Théodore Pellerin, Mel Rodriguez, Beth Ditto, Ted Levine, Alexander Skarsgård, Usman Ally, and more. It is executive produced by Funke and Lutsky, along with Sony’s TriStar Television, George Clooney, Grant Heslov, Esta Spalding, Charlie McDowell, and Dunst.

Throughout its first season, “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” has averaged a 0.03 live + same day rating in the adults 18-49 demo with 194,000 viewers. The series was developed at YouTube, but was then dropped by the company, and eventually picked up by Showtime.
