Freeform is set to close the book on “The Fosters” after its current season, but it’s not done with the characters from the show.

The cable channel will wrap up the series with a three-part “finale event” to air in the summer, after the fifth season concludes. As first reported by Deadline, Freeform has also ordered 13 episodes of a spinoff that will focus on two of the show’s young-adult characters, Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) and Callie (Maia Mitchell).

The second half of Season 5 premieres Jan. 9 and will run for 10 episodes. There’s no date yet for the three-part finale, and the spinoff is in the early stages of development.

The spinoff will jump ahead a few years and follow Callie and Mariana as they move to Los Angeles. The two will live together while Callie continues pursuing her social work and Mariana gets a job with a tech company.

“Now that the kids are growing up, it’s time to take them out into the world, to see them make their way into adulthood, continuing their search for identity and love, and the pursuit of their dreams and purpose in this ever-changing world,” “The Fosters” creators Peter Paige and Bradley Bredeweg and fellow executive producer Joanna Johnson say in a statement. The three EPs will also oversee the spinoff.

The first half of “The Fosters'” fifth season averaged 688,000 viewers and a 0.3 rating among adults 18-49 for initial airings. It typically doubled its audience with a week of delayed viewing.
