‘Chicago Fire,’ ‘Chicago PD’ and ‘Chicago Med’ renewed at NBC

NBC will be returning to Chicago at least three different ways in its 2017-18 season, even as one other Chicago series’ fate still hangs in the balance

“Chicago PD,” “Chicago Med,” and “Chicago Fire” have all been renewed for new seasons, the network officially announced Wednesday. However, there has been no decision made yet on the future of “Chicago Justice,” the fourth series in NBC’s continuing “Chicago” franchise that premiered earlier this year. In addition, NBC has yet to renew or cancel Dick Wolf’s other scripted series on the network, “Law & Order: SVU.”

All of the four “Chicago” series continue to be consistent ratings performers for the network. “Fire” remains the most successful out of them all, and ties with “SVU” as the second-highest show on NBC right now. In addition, “Med” managed to make it through a usually hard move to Thursday nights relatively unscathed last year, averaging a 2.1 rating in adults 18-49 with a week of DVR viewing factored in.

Following the departure of regular Jon Seda and the co-creator and longtime showrunner Matt Olmstead, who left in favor of an overall deal with ABC Studios, “Chicago PD” will cross the coveted 100-episode mark next season, joining “Fire” as the second series in the “Chicago” franchise to make it that far.

With all of this taken into consideration, none of these renewals come as much of a surprise, and in addition to the network’s recent pickups from the past week, NBC’s 2017-18 lineup grows increasingly clearer with each new announcement.

Now, make sure to keep checking back for more updates from the network in the coming days, including the eventual announcements regarding both “Law & Order: SVU” and “Chicago Justice.”
