One Direction win fastest-selling No.1 of 2011

One Direction have stormed to the top of the UK singles chart with their debut release ‘What Makes You Beautiful’.

The X Factor boyband – known individually as Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson – achieved the biggest first-week sales of 2011 after shifting over 153,000 copies of their eagerly-anticipated track.

The group’s tally is ahead of the numbers posted by established artists such as Adele, Bruno Mars and Jennifer Lopez, who have also managed to exceed 100,000 sales in one week with their releases throughout the year.

Last week’s number one ‘All About Tonight’ by Pixie Lott is bumped down to third place behind Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera with ‘Moves Like Jagger’, while Olly Murs climbs two to four with Rizzle Kicks team-up ‘Heart Skips A Beat’.

Will Young returns to the single digits this Sunday with ‘Jealousy’, which is up to nine from 12, and Leona Lewis – the third X Factor act in this week’s Top 10 – crashes six places from four with ‘Collide’.

Album chart champion Ed Sheeran drops two to 12 with his latest track ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’ as its + predecessor ‘The A Team’ climbs four to 14, squashing in beside ‘Marry You’ by Bruno Mars at 13.

Also rising this week is ‘Cheers (Drink To That)’, the sixth release from Rihanna’s fifth studio Loud, which is up a massive 11 places to 15 in its sixth Sunday on the chart.

Snow Patrol and Wretch 32, however, come tumbling down five and four places respectively to 16 and 17 with ‘Called Out In The Dark’ and ‘Don’t Go’.

The top half of the chart concludes with ‘Who’s Laughing Now’ by Jessie J climbing three to 18, Rizzle Kicks tripping from 15 to 19 with ‘Down With The Trumpets’ and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds scoring a new entry at 20 with ‘AKA…What A Life!’
