‘The Roommate’ tops box office with $15m

Teen thriller The Roommate has topped the US box office in its opening weekend.

The film, which stars Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester as a psychotic student, took $15.6 million, beating out the James Cameron-produced Sanctum, which took only $9.2 million.

Natalie Portman’s romantic comedy No Strings Attached falls one place to third this week, taking $8.4 million, followed closely by the Academy Award-tipped The King’s Speech with $8.3 million.

Rounding out the top five is the Seth Rogen superhero comedy The Green Hornet, which takes $6.1 million.

Next weekend sees the release of four new films, including Justin Bieber’s debut Never Say Never and the new Adam Sandler comedy Just Go With It.
